Linklight tries out the new workshop beta for Rivals of Aether which gives you access to custom new characters or mods! In this video I check out Speedrunner Mario. After 100% Accurate Fox and Speedrunner Link, it was only a matter of time before our mustache hero Mario joined the squad.
The character is obviously inspired by Terminal Montages interpretation and animations.

Grand Dad is a reference to Vinesauce Joel where he played bootleg mario games and came across Mario 7, being 7 Grand Dad. Grand Dad is also popular in the channel SiIvaGunner. There's a difference between what Mario's Side B and a normal long jump. In a long jump, Mario runs forward, and then propels himself forward. But this is him running forward, turning around last second, and propelling himself backwards using all of that forward momentum.

Here's a few notes about the character. He tosses the star out in his taunt because he doesn't need stars to beat Bowser. 0 star speedruns are a thing. The speed loss on hit is something that happens in 64. If it was going to be more accurate he'd constantly lose speed after charging it, and all movement would be backward. Also the M while having speed stands for minus. It's negative speed that breaks everything, since it has no cap, but forward speed does. Any, cool character, wish it had a SMG4 alt, though.

Speedrunner Mario is the most overpowered character in the TerminalMontage universe along with Christian Kirby. Speedster Fox is a tier below them.

@@yellowpig1026 no, that's accurate to sm64, maintaining (super) speed is actually really hard. I think they should just uncap speed (it looked like it capped to 9001). so if you actually charge up speed for 12 hours, you become the best character in there workshop.

I believe that the up special is a reference to the bomb-omb trick (what I'm referring to is basically when you grab a bomb-omb right before it explodes because of it increasing in size it pushes you backwards) and it's pushing SM upwards. I think that the neutral special is a reference to the fact that people constantly mess with the eggs that you get from the castles in Super Mario World in their animations of said game.

Neutral special has more than the egg so might as well explain it. Neutral special can use a koopa shell which is just a regular koopa shell no need to explain it (plus I have no idea what the koopa shell is a reference to) however the bowser used with full charge of Neutral special is actually the bowser used in Terminalmontage's videos and his expression is of the surprised look he has in either the SM64 episode or the SMW episode(I forget which but its probably the SMW episode). The Grand Dad variation of Speedrunner Mario's taunt is an obvious reference to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (with the usual meme) and the sprite used for the 'stand' is basically the same thing as the regular Grand Dad sprite(just made to fit into Trials of Aether better).

Edit: peeps have already explained this before me. Super Mario Bros Z is a fan animation that combines mario characters with the over the top action of Dragon Ball Z. Mario is basically Goku in that series. Grand Dad is his coloration from a bootleg game based on the NES Flintstones titled "7 Grand Dad".

Super Mario Bros. Z was a DBZ inspired Mario and Sonic crossover Flash animation series by Alvin Earthworm. "Grand Dad??" is in reference to Vinesauce Joel's reaction to a bootleg Mario game simply titled Mario 7 in it launch menu, but the title screen says, "7 Grand Dad" accompanied by a midi of The Flintstones theme song. 7 Grand Dad is a lazy reskin of a Flinstones video game with Mario's head replacing Fred's head.

The forward smash is a reference to the slaps that SM mario does in TerminalMontage's animations and more accurately it is a reference to the scene in his Super Smash Bros Ultimate episode where Mario and Yoshi take turns slapping bowser. Up smash is a reference to the keys in Super Mario World and their destructive power in Terminalmontage's Super Mario World episode(where they literally almost destroyed the entirety of a forest in that video). Down smash... I'm pretty sure that it is a move improvised into the role based on Speedrunner Mario constantly using alternate universes... I guess its better than using regular mario's down smash.
