For anyone interested, All about Spelling now offers a letter tile app, which is great if you get overwhelmed by pieces of have a young hold who might run off with your tiles. We have love it!
Since spelling has always been a struggle for me, I've been nervous about finding a good curriculum for my kids to learn to love spelling. Thank you for this review, it was helpful to see the pros and cons of four different options!
I agree about Sonlight, if you're looking at it specifically for spelling. As a comprehensive LA curriculum, I feel like its strengths are more in the phonics instruction and the creative writing assignments.

Having used many different spelling programs I would agree with you about Spelling You See, in addition to what you pointed out it is very inconsistent with spelling patterns. I email the company to ask why and they explained that they don't follow a typical Orton-Gillingham style that the words for example when plural and end in s and a natural word ending in s or es, are not shown as different spelling patterns. I felt like we went back a year when we used Spelling U See. A note on All About Spelling, if using all the magnets is too much to deal with they have an app that you can use on most devices. Sure saves on time and it's still fun for the kids. I love AAS too. I have a struggling learner and I keep trying new suggestions and I always end back to AAS.
Thank you so much for this video!! Spelling was not working for us. I just ordered Sequential Spelling and All About Spelling the day before I saw this. The random list method was not working for my oldest (though my one kiddo loves it) and Spelling You See didn't work for us either. It seems our kiddos have similar learning styles so I am looking forward to getting these even more now! It was great hear about the different programs you've used.
Thank you this was very helpful! I've been considering all about spelling. I have a lot of small children so I was a little hesitant about all the pieces but the board idea is great I will just have to keep it hung up high. I know having the actual tangible tiles will help my children learn better. They're very hands on. But like I said I have very small children as well a 1yr old, 2yr old and 3yr old who would love to eat those tiles 😅. We have to be very careful with this. Maybe I have to make sure they are napping or set up somewhere else doing their own activity when I do spelling.
The I Can Read it word lists are not actually the spelling word lists for Sonlight. The spelling word list is in the notes for the week after the schedule.
Are you sure you’re doing spelling you see according to their directions? You’re supposed to read it together for the parent student portion and for the “test” you dictate it to them and you help them with any grammar help they need. The point is just to spell correctly. They’re not to do this from memory!
Thanks for the review. I think I will try sequential spelling for my daughter. We've tried all about spelling (which works amazing for my son) but she just doesn't care about all the rules or want to apply them. We've been on level 2 for the last 2 years with little improvement. We've also tried spelling you see and it didn't work for either of my kids.

We've been using AAS for my second and third grader and I don't mind it at all, but the 3rd grader is dyslexic and always struggling, so someone mentioned checking out sequential spelling for him. Do you have a thought for recommendation between the two as to sequential working better for dyslexia?
I think it depends on the child. My 8-year-old son and my 11-year-old nephew are both dyslexic. My nephew is doing well with sequential spelling, but my son really needs the more hands on materials of AAR.
This is so helpful! Which AAS level did you start your oldest with? I’ve heard conflicting things about whether to starts with level 1 or to follow the placement guide.
I just started with level one, there are resources with each year, so I feel like if you start in the middle you’ll miss out (or have to buy separately)
Thank you for the review! I have only heard of all about spelling and spelling you see. All about Spelling was my 1st pick. But after this review I'm interested in sequential spelling. I've not heard of it before. For sequential spelling could I get away with just using the teacher guide to teach or would I need both the student workbook and teacher guide?
We just have the one book (teachers guide) in the video. All the writing by my son was done in a spiral notebook 📓 😊 The only other thing I used was the dry erase board.
Question Lists… and copying lists.. Do you think the daily lessons are as effective as just copying and testing on the words? All the parts do seem to Be a reason to keep me away.. lol I want a simple program for my 11.5 year old ready to spell now. Just began getting more fluent in reading. Ideas??? I’m really in struggle mode. Someone gave me ALL of sequential spelling so that would save me sooo much!
Thank you for this video. I just ordered all about spelling and all about reading for my special needs 18 yr old and my first grader. My 18 yr old had been at a 4th grade level for reading but somewhere along the line the public school changed their program and now (during the shut down last year) we have discovered she is unable to read simple kindergarten words.
How do you feel about using AAS along with All About Reading? If you use it. We have used it for a while now but should I be using the spelling books alongside it .
I actually did just the spelling for a couple years and just started doing the All About Reading program this year. They can definitely work all on their own.
My daughter is going into 5th grade and spelling has been such a struggle. Trying to find something that will help the words to stick for her. I'm not sure what level to start with. I'm not sure she'll go for something too low if you know what I mean. I was thinking of trying Sequencial Spelling.
Sequential spelling starts really simple, but the words get harder pretty quickly! Yes, I’m looking at starting All about Spelling for my first grader this year and first thing I said to myself was how I didn’t care for the box it comes with to organize the cards.
It's not meant to be done by memory, you dictate the passage and so they only have to think about how to spell the words they are focusing on. But I can see how the approach still wouldn't work for for some children. ☺️
I'd recommend starting with level 1 when he starts 1st in the fall! :) You can take it slow... they have lots of extra practice words for each lesson, so you could essentially spend an entire week on 1 lesson reiterating the concepts and words taught that lesson. :)
I wouldn't say that they need it per se. I just bought All About Reading for my 7-year-old, but my older two I taught using 100 Easy Lesson and the Sonlight Language Arts program.
Yes, absolutely! It may be a little tedious in some aspects (the tiles... I think older kids get bored by them easier). But you could definitely use it. I'd also say that Sequential Spelling is a bit faster paced which might be good for an older student who will pick it up quickly. :)
Word lists don’t work with my kids!!! I like how sequential spelling shows patterns and we find that we need phonics and we could adapt it to put phonics teaching in as my older kids know their phonics just use it for spelling!!! We love copywork!!! We need a separate piece of paper as we need room for mistakes!!! We love all about reading so Idk why we haven’t used all about spelling!!!
