You should really try and get hold of 'the cloackmaster cycle'. Really great series that explains the Spelljammer universer very well! I always used to cut journey times MASSIVELY in the flow; it's just too long to be close to 30 days between EACH SPHERE?! It's insane. 1d3+1 days for near spheres, upping the dice to d6 +2, d12+4, d20 +6 for near and far spheres. Makes the game a lot more fun.

The slaver races can use alternatives to Major and Minor Helms. They have Death Helms and Lifejammers, which use the mystical energy of life, instead of the mystical energy of spells, to move ships. The Illithids have Series Helms, which use the mystical energy of psionic power, instead of spells to move ships. Series Helms also chain together. (Series Helms are supposedly tuned to specific races, but if you use psionics with Spelljammer, you could have a psionic PC attempt to learn how to use a stolen illithid Series Helm. But, by default, nobody would be able to reuse them...except other Mind Flayers.) Beholders use some a beholderkin, called an Orbus to move ships. Orbus are a bit weird. It's like someone found a way to cripple their magical eyestalks, to turn their power inward and transform them into living spelljamming helms. There are magical spells to Create Minor Helms and Create Major Helms, so you could have an NPC ship with a bunch of non-magical chairs and a bunch of scrolls to turn those chairs into temporary helms. (The PCs capture a ship and steal the helm and after the spell ends it turns back into a normal chair...or if you prefer the chair disintegrates into a pile of dust.) Also, if the PCs want to start stealing helms, make lots of the NPCs do the same thing. Ultimately, theft (and piracy) steals the resources of NPC traders. So have some traders take steps to deter helm theft. Even the evil organisations could (try to) take steps to avoid having people steal their helms. Have wizard marks or other spells put onto some helms, with the PCs expected to return those helms to their rightful owners (for a salvage fee) and explain where they got them. This would work in lawful areas, but not lawless ones. It could be fun for the PCs to turn up somewhere with a stolen helm that tells the customs officers that it has been stolen from a trading company that operates there. Have NPC spellcasters cast spells on helms that cause damage or destruction to people stealing them. The Elven Navy could buy or make helms that explode if an orc or half-orc sit on them. Also, get a mimic, on a wrecked ship to pretend to be a spelljamming helm, and it could attempt to eat the first spellcaster who tries to sit on it.
