Spencer Lee wrestled the craziest period of his college career! Matt Ramos went out there and gave it his all, butat the end Spencer Lee came out on top
Yeah, if he's remotely healthy no one is beating Spencer Lee over 3 periods this year. If he's losing it's going to getting caught like that and pinned.
Getting put on his back turned out to be a good experience for Spencer. He fought off the pin, and had the satisfaction of pinning a very high quality opponent in Matt Ramos. Spencer is so used to rolling over opponents he needed the close call to remind him he must never underestimate an opponent. Very good match by both wrestlers. A great one to win and a tough one to lose.
yeah I bet that close call is gonna be in the back of his head the rest of the season making him a slightly more cautious and better wrestler. Dude is insane
No doubt Matt got into Spencer’s head and he came out at NCAA tournament the same way going for it big time so props to him and it paid off for Ramos. This first match was a foreshadowing of what was to come. I do feel bad for Spencer because same thing happened in HS denied a 4th title. Its like a curse
It’s probably pretty amazing the amount of confidence Spencer Lee gives to his opponents when they’re able to put up points on him even in spite of getting pinned lol
Spencer is a once in a generation wrestler, he’s so fun too watch!! And Iowas wrestling team is gonna be next level for the next 4 years, just had one of the best recruiting classes ever in any sport… picked up 4 wrestlers ranked in the top 2 at their weight, two of those number 1 at their weight, and Kueter and Chittum are number 1 and number 2 p4p in country, and we picked up another top 5 guy in Block!! Bring on the titles baby!!
Watching this match vs Perdue I was in shock watching Lee get taken down and nearly pinned, Lee doesn't see the ceiling very often and you could see how amped he was after Lee beat the lights out of him after that. Was it just under estimating the opponent in the opening mins? I am taking a guess so.
I always root for the under dog except with Spencer. This was a good match not that many that are this good. This kid is good too maybe this can be a repeat in the finals.
Spencer had a feeling this kid would be a problem, and a problem he was, RIP to Spencer run but one hell of a match by Ramos to move on to the finals 👀
Great match. S. Lee caught slipping by a really good wrestler, but was able to avoid a pin and get back on his feet and continue on. What is even more incredible than that is, while the entire place is going crazy while Lee is on his back, then going crazy again when Lee was about to pin Ramos, was the pure emotionless response from the chick on the end of the Iowa bench. NOTHING gets to her.
@@marcreiss1183 well cause it wasn't even big tens let alone nationals. He's lost before & still won the title every year. Not that I expect him to lose this year but just sayin. Still I think they may have sweated the throw a teensie bit more than the takedown. Or not, but I know it got me feeling a little worried. What's important is Spencer sweated/didn't sweat any of it at just the right balance/amount!
I don't know if you read these or not. I admire you as much or more than any athlete... Don't let the crowd get to you... I did the same thing one time .... The kid got a reversal on me and the crowd erupted... After I pinned him I yelled to his fans "Take that home with you" I hated myself for that... Don't ever let your emotions take over...They could cause you to make a mistake and lose.... I always admire these athletes with ICE in their veins. They stay EVEN KIEL...ie Bryce Young QB Alabama...Jalen Hurts former BAMA QB current Super Bowl Eagles QB..... TUA Tagovailoa former BAMA QB current Dolphins QB...These guys maintain mental control NO MATTER WHAT..... You can too I KNOW YOU CAN and it might be enough to WIN a close match for you.....
Its insane. You usually see top high school wrestling score in bunches like that. Not top wrestlers in college doing it to other top wrestlers lmao dudes insane
Of course they "realize" that... But they respect the hussle by both guys, 16 points between the two of them in the first period and with all the scrabbles, to almost pinned, to pinned.
@@pauldarling330 it’s definitely a crazy moment but the way spencer Lee makes it look so easy and instantly comes back and finishes the match is something that goes over everybody’s head
A wrestler like gomez style type can beat spencer you can't beat spencer on the mat but if you can stay neutral good wrestler on their feet can beat spencer they need to attack spencer body locks and drop downs I think a lot of wrestler is cautious with spencer if they go at him they have a chance just like that he was on his back but don't ever wrestle him on the mat stay on their feet
@@gianpolignano2632 Lee is still in College, and coming off double Knee surgery, the world team trial could be on his mind, but only Lee would know that. He is taking it one match at a time, trying to stay healthy.
I'm afraid this is a harbinger. I'll admit I do not know how tough this weight is, or if somebody was having a good day or a bad day... or both... but... Spencer should have defeated this guy soundly.
Ok he got taken down & thrown but still, I don't get how a fall before the 1st periods over isn't defeating someone soundly. That's how it's ultimately defined in the sport. There's no way to earn more points (in a single match) in a dual meet or tournament than a fall. And I guess you missed the announcers talking up Ramos' bonafides in freestyle just as the match began.
@@tjm6983 The best guy in the nation doesn't let #9 get 8 points on him. He is the better wrestler and got the fall... but I think its a Harbinger... Imagine what #2 can do.
They can't match the lightweight coaching expertise of Iowa. That said I can't claim they haven't been outperforming Iowa with their coaching of the mid & upper weights.
