@wrestlerdude320 yea true. Lee just qualified the weight. He's going to Paris. His toughest match put of everyone was to zou #1 seed. Other than that, he teched everyone
He has THE BEST chain wrestling I have EVER seen. His physical strength, technique, and chain wrestling are what make him so lethal on the mat. That’s just my opinion.
how did he get the leverage to correct himself with twisted hips, a low head, and one foot touching the ground that’s insane strength to get the upper hand in that position
FINALLY ! > Finally an American who crushes the eastern freestyle guys with gut wrenches, rolls, leg laces etc. Usually we get 2 takedowns but they rack up points with that roll em right, roll em left freestyle junk
I posted my opinion on this elsewhere, but I’ll repeat it here. Lee is an impressive and dominant wrestler, but he is also the beneficiary of the new(er)-current scoring system which makes it so much easier to score. The wrestling authorities wanted to increase scoring but they have gone overboard to make it too easy to score. It results in high scoring matches, but not in better quality wrestling. I am probably in the minority on this issue, but that’s ok. Lee rolls over his own back when doing his leg lace turns, which in my day would have cost him points. In this match, he almost pinned himself! His back is actually more exposed than his opponent’s but they let him get away with it. Check out how John Smith used to do similar techniques way back in his day. His back was not on the mat because he bridged as he turned or came off the mat entirely. Now, the only thing that matters is who initiates the move. It does not matter if, in doing so, they expose their own back. I don’t like that. I think that a wrestler should be rewarded for good technique but should also suffer the consequences of their mistakes when performing the technique poorly. I am sure that Lee would likely win most of his matches anyway, but I wish they would roll back some of the scoring rules. It would make for better technique and closer matches.
You’re stating that he is the beneficiary as though he is the ONLY wrestler to have some sort of advantage. This has been the rule for many years…would you also prefer we go back to the 80’s when you were pinned the instant your shoulders touched the mat? They made these rule changes before Spencer started his freestyle career and he is wrestling within the rules. I’m sure if the rules were different he would wrestle different. Your post makes zero sense and gives off old timer vibes about “back in my day.” Just let the new generation take over, it’s better that way.
Youre definitely not very versed on freestyle wrestling! When turning someone, reguardless if its a leg lace ,or gut wrench, the offensive move counts, not whether you're back exposed, briefly. You're talking about rule changes, and the rule changes were in folkstyle. Not familiar with any freestyle rule changes! Each wrestler has the same rule book, therefore all fare!
yeah i noticed he almost got reversed and stuck as well. he's playing a dangerous game and it's cost him in college as well. But as for the rules. let's be honest. if Spencer Lee (an American) can tech his way to a gold medal at the Olympics, there's nothing that will get the international wrestling committee to change the rules faster than a dominant American wrestler. lol
@michaelscott33 his comment makes sense. he never said Lee was the only wrestler benefiting from the rule set. you didn't read his comment carefully and constructed that argument out of thin air. He's stating an opinion that you might not agree with. It's not unreasonable to question scorung criteria where points are scored so fast that with one move on repeat can end a match in 20 seconds. and isnt a pin. previously for example you couldnt chain gut wrenches or leg laces. but also back then take downs were 1 point and there were no point for pushouts. not sayng that that was necessarily better but it was different. you could say maybe if you allow multiple leg laces maybe a tech should be 15 points like in american folk style. or if you chain them you have to alternate direction. or maybe none of the above, but it's all reasonable things as fans for us to discuss. And I think part of what he's trying to address is all the comments saying that Lee is the most dominant top wrestler ever seen! (just look in this comment section. im sure you'll find several people saying this). So his point is is in this era where you can score 2 for a takedown lock up a leg lace and chain it together 4 times it's "easier" to dominate a match that way compared to a time when takedowns were 1 point and you couldn't chain laces. which is true. in that time a takedown and 1 lace was 3 points. then you had to attack a different move but likely youd get stood back up. youd need to do that 3 times plus another takedown for a tech. much harder to do it in that era. not saying that lee couldn't win then but it is to say that the rule set is more conducive for rapid chained together back exposures for quick tech falls now than at other times. and thatswhat he said, amd that's true. the other thing he said that was true is that Spencer lee exposed his own back and almost got reversed and pined going for that second gut wrench. good for him he didn't but that could have been disastrous against the wrong guy. lee has a tendancy to be agressive and has gotten countered amd put on his back or even pinnned a few times in college. so he's not unbeateable like people are sayimg based off of this tournament. Je did great and I'm rooting for him. Im sure that other fella is as well
Go look at Spencer's stats in Freestyle. All the way back. He hasn't lost in Freestyle since 2015 and that was to Daton Fix. This is predictable with Spencer. This man doesn't lose in Freestyle.
not really. watch this match again and notice where he gets reversed going for the second gut. he coulda goten himself stuck but the opponent wasn't able to capitalize. the same thing that got him stuck in the semis a few years ago
he played a dangerous game on that second gut wrench. he got reversed and back exposed. the wrong guy might just catch him and pin him. Lee has put himself on his back and stuck a few times in college. most notably in his national semifinal match his final season. Now in this match he erased that mistake so it's almost like it didn't happen. but he needs to be very careful. might be worth taking the one gut then switch to the leglace which he was killing people with and isnt really as counterable. but obviously good work Spence! let's go USA!
@drewlawrence5289 Yeah, it didn't always let you do 5 guts in a row. Used to be 1 pt TD, 2pt Gut, another way to score(or hold him there for a count and you got three and could gut again). Then it was a TD, 2 guts. Then it was just as many as you needed. I don't see the issue. You should be able to stop a gut.
@@scourge8097 It has nothing to do with stopping it but how points are awarded. Regular fans don’t get it and even Spencer himself said things need to be changed
@@MrSilus2000 I don't know what "regular fans," you're talking about. Who doesn't understand it-that is a fan of Wrestling? Are you talking casual HS Wrestling fans? I think MOST Wrestling fans are confused why we even have Folkstyle Wrestling when...nobody else does. Even Women's College Wrestling is Freestyle. You're talking from a very limited, US-centric view point...also, it's really not hard to follow. I also don't know or believe that "Spencer himself," said things "need to change," but...LOL...what arrogance if that's the case? When did he say they need to change the SCORING? They should go back to the World Championship weight classes. The rules are...juuust fine. They're probably the biggest reason he's got a real chance to win a medal.
yeah that has me a little concerned as well. also in his second match he was down 6-1 and was unable to get a tackedown on like 3 shots but got taken down and exposed even by his opponent. Now on like his 4th ir 5th shot he was able to add like 4 turns to really quickly chamge the score board. but there will be guys that if he cant gets shots on and he gives up a big lead, he wont be able to come back. So. He looks good. Im rooting for him but based on this tournament I think he is beatable. he's also phenomenal and can likely beat anyone. but he made mistakes and if he does those things he could pay. but for now, forget all that! lets go Spence!!
