I'm here at the Conn-Selmer factory in Indiana with a lotta money to spend. So in this video I take you through my instrument selection process in real-time as I choose from 12 (!) instruments. (Hint: you can use this even if you want to just choose from 2.)

As a multi-instrumentalist of over 50 years, the one thing I can say for sure, is that every single instrument is different. Just like human beings.

Excellent 'Buying a Horn' tutorial. This reminds me of the time I was choosing my first pro trumpet back in high school. The Marshall Music salesman let me take four Bach Strads and a Benge home to try out for a week and my teacher and I went over all of them using similar criteria. I can't imagine any salesman in the US these days letting a high school kid do that now!!!

I’m going to test out clarinets tomorrow and I was looking for a video on how to do it correctly because this is my first time looking to buy an instrument. And I found your channel after finding you in high school and it was so helpful! Love the tip at the end and look forward to more stuff!!

I have always admired the sound of Selmer bass clarinets. Sweet in the high register and beefy in the lower notes!

Wow 6 bass clarinets! that's awesome, I still can't get one Legrande or BCXXI. Hope to someday. This helps to show me how to pick one out when that day comes. great vid.

As a suggestion for checking grain quality, rubbing your fingernail across the grain can help with identifying grain density and locating any irregularities in the wood. Might be a little more precise than eyeballing it.

Well that was fun and ear-opening. I fully understand the "pick the horn that lets you play you." If it feels right, it just very well may be THE one. Your description of how to narrow down the options based on fixable things is very much like house-hunting and deciding based on paint color. If you can fix it, it may be the better horn for you. I hadn't fully thought about spring tightness on keys for ease of playability though have been aware of the tightness-usually wanting things a wee bit tighter to be sure pads sealed (mainly on my saxes). The A key on my bass is quite stiff (still after 5 years), so getting that adjusted certainly wouldn't hurt. Awesome mini seminar! Something like this would be great at ClarinetFest.... ;-)

What do you think is the best bang for your buck bass clarinet for a very talented 8th grader who is planning to continue symphonic band through high school and maybe community bands in college (but not planning to major in music at this time) They play a Jupiter at school and have a loaner Yamaha. I think they like the Jupiter à little better.

I have a Selmer Bundy which I love. It only goes down to Eb however but it's otherwise nice for me. Also, are you planning to go to the Low Clarinet Convention in January? If not you should.

Yeah have you tried pulling out the mouthpiece or barrel a bit? What mouthpiece are you using? and are you absolutely sure it isn't technique related? Have you tried other horns to check for differences?

I have tried many options. The clarinet needs to be pulled out at the midjoint about a quarter of an inch. Many clarinets, too.
