The entire saga of Scanlan trying to procure and deliver spice to Jarett, and all the shenanigans that ensue. Please tag spoilers in your comments! All clips belong to Critical Role: / @criticalrole
What they leave out of this is their arrival at Gilmore's parent's house. They ask them about fusaka and they had not heard of it, which, combined with the knowledge that Jarrett has a questionable past, is why they decide that it's a drug and not for food.
“Next time. Next time, I’ll do things differently. Next time, I *will* find drugs. That’s the lesson to be taken from this, look harder! Look harder. The Meat Man never gives up” -The Meat Man
I love how Scanlan was so occupied putting up a facade that he never once thought of insight checking if they were doing the same. Just one "are they messing with me?". XD
@@myrmidonmamori N O P E I love Sam but you're giving him too much credit, and Matt not enough. Matt conned the con man, and It's great. Sam tricked himself because he wanted it to be drugs so badly and Matt happily obliged him.
When I listened to that part I was internally screaming for him to make an insight check before finalizing the deal. How bad it gets for Scanlan…oof makes it such a legendary arc.
“You may call me… The meat man.” I’m so lucky, I was just about to take a sip of my coffee when he said it. If I would’ve actually taken a sip, it’d come out of my nose
Sam: Am I feeling high at all? Matt, knowing full well that it's an actual spice and not a drug at all: Make a constitution check. His poker face is legendary.
The best part of this whole thing, for me, is that Scanlan is battling through some low-grade manic depression through all of this. It's so wonderfully wrapped up in the pure charisma of the character and he interweaves it all so well without it ever feeling heavy. Whenever I watch these clips, I am always reminded of how powerful Sam's abilities as a storyteller really are.
I'm so glad you included Scanlan going back to try and find the spice dealers. There's just something about the way Sam says "Dammit" after every set back makes me laugh
Taliesin (Percy?): I'm so worried he's going buy meth from these people. Sam (Scanlan?): I'm not going to buy meth from them! *NOT EVEN one minute later* Scanlan: Spice?
Still one of my favorite things to happen in Critical Role history. I remember laughing so hard it hurt the first time I watched these episodes, and I still do. Long live the legend of the Meat Man.
the most hilarious thing to me is if they just let Jarret give them some money this whole thing could have been avoided. I'm so glad that didn't happen, but the whole, for what of a nail, boggles my mind
Scanlan asking any merchant would have also prevented it or a single insight check on the people scamming him. So many mistakes had to be made to reach this outcome.
Had they not asked, there would have been no other occasion for jarret to ask. The players asked for a side quest, and as a DM, I am confident he 100% he pulled this one from his ass. Just the way he said Fusaka the first time, he was making that up as he was saying it.
😂😂😂 They have a bad habit of saying these things. Like when they described the DnDBeyond commercial as them being an 80s cartoon and action figures going through walls. Now they have a cartoon AND action figures. 😂😂
The funny part for me is that this spice is actually really close to a real thing, Asafoetida. An herb used in Ancient Rome but now illegal in several places because it is mildly poisonous. It was also used mostly for meat dishes.
Well... Fusaka is I believe something we call NUTMEG. It can get pricey in larger quantity, is mildly hallucinogenic and in small amounts enhances the taste of meat greatly :)
The wild thing is that there is an excellent chance Matt just made up foosaka on the spot, kicking off this whole saga because he didn't want to have Jarrett ask for a bottle of wine or something.
I love that Taliesin/Percy isnt worried about Sam/Scanlan buying. He's worried that hes buying meth from children. Priorities! "They were carrying fruit!" The reaction to Sam's deadpan "do you spice" though! 😂😂😂
Scanlan was the quintessential US tourist showing up in Jamaica or Amsterdam trying to score weed for like the 2nd time in their life. Also him getting frustrated at not being able to find the dealer and magic his way out of his shame was just pathetic, like me as a DM wouldve been like "sorry Sam not every character in my world is as stupid as you".
