Spider-Man 2 is a 2004 American superhero film directed by Sam Raimi and written by Alvin Sargent from a story by Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Michael Chabon. A sequel to the 2002 film Spider-Man, it is the second installment in the Spider-Man trilogy based on the fictional Marvel Comics character of the same name. Tobey Maguire stars as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, alongside Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Alfred Molina, Rosemary Harris, and Donna Murphy.

That is a good reason, but there's more to it, as written in Issue 10, from March '64. Jameson really sees the goodness and selflessness in Spider-man, and believes he'll never amount to that, and therefore envies Spider-man all the more, out of shame he doesn't see himself as a higher person than Spider-man, who puts his life on the line against foe after foe, while Jameson just scrounges loose change and shakes down his employees to save a penny at his paper. (I feel like at the time of this comic's existence, it was easily some of Stan Lee's best writing, it really holds up, making the stories back then seem timeless now.) And yes, I am well aware there have been changes to Jameson's character over the years, but his disdain for Spider-man has remained the same motivation, even if reasons themselves change.

Spiderman 2 is based on the award winning comic Spiderman No More. A comic where Peter gets shat on by the press and gives up being Spiderman. Actually the chocolate cake scene wasn't just a throwaway scene. It might seem that way at face value, but it's the only time Peter is ever shown genuine compassion up to that point in the film (besides his Aunt). Just before that scene, Peter is at his absolute lowest point. He is continually stepped on for his choice to be Spiderman and all his personal relationships crumble. And when he does give it up, he is slapped with the repercussions of that choice. He's realizing he can't even be happy living for himself, nor can he be happy being Spiderman. He has no one. In that moment Ursula comes in to....offer him some cake, and milk. It's simple, it's quiet. But it's effective. We often underestimate the impact that a simple thoughtful gesture can do for someone. It was small, but it's exactly what Peter needed. To have a moment to breathe and feel like someone actually cares. That gentle bit of humanity that we all need. It shows Peter that he's not as alone as he might think. And that's kind of beautiful.
@depressedpress
@depressedpress 4 года назад
Exactly what Chris said. This is one of the most important scenes in the movie. I wrote this a few years in response to a similar complaint and I stand by it completely today: This scene was never meant to introduce Ursula as a secondary love interest or to serve an abandoned side-plot. It’s self-contained and important. This is about Peter Parker, the person, receiving a simple, unexpected act of human kindness. Not Spiderman, the hero. Not as payment or thanks, but simply because a sweet girl thought he might like a piece of cake. Smartly, it’s never expounded upon further, but the implication is clear. The gesture crystallizes Peter’s thoughts: if you CAN do good, then you SHOULD do good. Whether that’s saving the city from a madman or bringing a piece of cake to the boy next door because he’s seemed down lately. Peter’s heart would always be Mary Jane’s, but at that moment Ursula had the audience. We loved her because she was doing what we couldn’t. Peter has sacrificed and fought. He deserves to have everything he wants. A piece of cake and a quiet moment may have been the very least that could be done, yet it was exactly what was needed. The movie would reinforce the theme in the following scenes with Aunt May and Spider-Man’s selfless rescue of the commuter train, but never would it be boiled down so simply and beautifully as this.
@thing1thing2themediamaniac43
@thing1thing2themediamaniac43 4 года назад
I always thought that Ursula was way better for Peter Parker than Mary Jane Watson anyway. I mean giving Peter that cake and milk while a friendly gesture was an attempt on Ursula's part to become more than just friends and everytime I see that scene I'm rooting for Peter and Ursula to get together. Because let's face it in SpiderMan 3 Mary Jane is kind of a BITCH at at least Peter has the excuseof being corrupted by VENOM. WTH is Mary Jane's excuse🤔

I always liked the scene but some yrs ago it hit me different upon a rewatch. I was at a real low my first yr living in a certain country. As I was walking to a private lesson (I teach) I was just sort of hunched over walking like everything was on my shoulders and a random child ran a little bit ahead of his dad and the child said so sweetly "hello" and somehow that made me smile and his dad noticed and smiled too. @@blackmagician7645 I still like SpiderMan 3. While it's far from a good movie I still enjoy watching it because it'sa fun ride. Except for the scenes where Peter Parker dances out of the blue that's still just a whole new level of WTF on it's own. The biggest problem with SpiderMan 3 was that it introduced way to many Super Villians. Harry Osborne as The New Green Goblin seeking revenge against Peter for killing his father would have been enough. Introducing another Villian like say Venom still could've worked because while Peter is fighting Harry Venom is slowly corrupting him trying to get Peter to kill Harry and crossover to The DarkSide. But adding The SandMan as the guy who really killed Uncle Ben and than establish that it was a total accident was just stupid and giving him a daughter who's terminally ill and a vengeful ex-wife so we can sympathise with him was even stupider. Don't get me wrong I love The SandMan and I love SpiderMan 3 regardless of it's flaws. But adding The SandMan was just superfluous

“My son, the astronaut” is definitely a Jameson type line. He’s so full of himself that he even lives vicariously through his son’s success and takes pride from it. This reassures two things about his character that we already know: Jameson is socially dominant, and he wastes no time in letting you it. Plus adding one new thing to his character makes this scene relevant: He’s not even above using the successes of his own son to elevate himself socially. We learn all of this through that one abrupt line. Jameson speaks in headlines because he knows that’s the impact that sells the story.

"and he's also the reason that the venom symbiote appears." Not in the comics, only in the 90's cartoon. Though when this movie first came out I figured that in the third movie they were going to go the cartoon route and have Jameson's son be the one to bring back the symbiote since I knew there was no way they were going to be able to do the Secret Wars. Unfortunately the third movie didn't go the comics or the cartoon route and instead had a meteor just happen to land right next to Peter making it so that him being a superhero had nothing to do with him coming into contact with the symbiote as well as making Captain Jameson's appearance in this movie pretty much pointless.

I think the "my son, the astronaut" line works just fine. He starts it off with "An American hero", and it's clear Jameson's stuck in the past, when astronauts were considered some of the biggest heroes of their countries, as they represented mankind's greatest accomplishments and the ability to push beyond our terrestrial boundaries. So he's bragging that he thinks his son is up there with the greatest of the great just because he's an astronaut! ...Not that being an astronaut isn't a great feat in and of itself, but he's treating it with the royalty nobody gives them anymore.

I like the line and delivery of it, it sounds like something JJ would say but I agree with NC on the fact that his son's introduction was pointless, he was nothing more than plot device and rather than using it to delve into what everyone keeps bringing up here in the comments (his hatred towards masked vigilantes versus true heroes like his son) his son is used instead like a prop to throw yet another conflict in Peter's face. It probably would have helped had they tossed a few references around about his son (being an astronaut) in the first movie, because at least then it'd be a callback that finally played out. The throwaway reference in Venom had more meaning, especially now that we know JJJ is in the MCU. Because at least there he was actually being an astronaut in the movie instead of just arm candy for a two-timing whiny brat.
@JohnEusebioToronto

I thought JK Simmons delivered the "my son, the astronaut" line perfectly. It felt very natural to me. JJJ is an egomaniac. He is absolutely the kind of guy to talk up his son every chance he gets. Calling him an "American hero" and introducing him as "the astronaut" is perfect.

So from my understanding, Octavius' arms is a representation of his Id portion of his personality and not actually true sentience. You can see this throughout the movie as the arms represent his inner desires. You can see this specifically when he first walks out of the hospital, and the arms protect him subconsciously. Because of this and the scene, you left out (about the inhibitor chipped being gone), the arms which are connected to his mind, overpower his sense of morality (ego and superego) due to the fact that the arms only move based on his inner desires/Id. It's why he has no problems being extremely violent, it's why he throws the car at Peter. Because under the influence of the arms, he only knows what he wants and just strives to it without rationalisation etcetc. The arm's purpose was created to finish the experiment, so mix that with him missing the inhibitor chip and this movie's logic and personality shift of Octavius makes more sense.

The injury was severe enough to force the studio into making replacement plans in case Maguire couldn't reprise his role. Gyllenhaal went into negotiations to take over the role but Maguire made a full recovery just in time. Coincidentally enough, Gyllenhaal ended up playing the antagonist Mysterio in 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home opposite Tom Holland.

Doesn't feel forced coming from a man like him, especially coming from a man with a newspaper company. Astronauts have that mystique about them, where only the best of the best and very select few make it. There are parents who are very proud of their surgeon/captain/lawyer/judge/sports star child.

John Jameson had more of a plot in the comics than this movie. He legit went to the moon, found a mysterious moon rock and turned into a werewolf in result driving him mad and that’s only the 1/4 of his character. All in this movie he was the rebound guy that just happened to be an astronaut.
