All due respect to Martin, but in Spider-Man 2, when Peter tells Aunt May the truth, her reaction is completely justified. She didn't blow Peter off. She left the room because her whole perception of what happened to her husband was shifted and yes, Peter is responsible (to a certain point). When they meet again, she completely forgives Peter and is proud of his telling her. Her reaction is very real and insanely relatable, at least to me. Two of the best scenes in Spider-Man 2.

Funny thing about the Piano thing Aunt May in Spider-Man 2 says “I’ve been giving piano lessons again” to a bank teller and Peter reacts “You’re giving piano lessons again?” Which could explain why he’s good at piano as she probably taught him as a kid I rewatched the trilogy recently and I only JUST connected this

Interesting take on that confession scene in Spidey 2. I found that May was processing that her surrogate son played a role in Ben getting killed that night and Peter wanted to get rid of that guilt by being honest with her about why he went elsewhere and that his actions did indirectly get Ben killed. She did forgive him and was proud that he found the strength to be honest with himself and to her, about what he had done. That was when he started to finally recover his powers and become Spider-Man bit by bit in that film. That accumulates into one of the finest climaxes in a Superhero film and damn, does it feel well earned and satisfying to watch.
@CLDJ227

Exactly, I didn't take her selling his comics as a way to get back at him, that was played as a joke. I think it made sense and was shocking that she doesn't immediately forgive right then, because she was in shock. She does come around, she just needed time process what he told her.

The Birth of Bully Maguire lol I rewatched this movie recently and Honestly because of the memes I found laughing a lot more then the anger I felt the first time. Me & my friends just kept crackin up so we got more enjoyment out of it. Tho every time Topher's Venom says "I" in this movie instead of "WE" It makes me cringe cause I've loved Venom and been collecting his comics since i was 4 and that just dont fit right though this Eddie was thinner like the Ultimate Version which Said I but that wasnt an alien suit so i digress that didnt work for me personally. Sam Raimi said he would always be haunted by the fact he never got to make Spider-Man 4. He hated Spider-Man 3, and tried making up for it with a 4th film, but didn’t like any of the scripts given to him, so the reboot went forward
@dylansmith5206

Come to think of it. They should at least see about making a comic book series or an animated film based in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man universe with it being Spider-Man 4. Similar to what happened with Tim Burton's Batman 3 (Giving it the comic book treatment years latter) and those two Batman 60's direct to DVD animated films. That would be neat. They can even bring back Sam Raimi to direct a film like that with Tobey Maguire and Kiristian Dunst (I do apologize if I didn't properly spell ). Also. Speaking of Batman. Korey and Martin should see about bringing back Retro Reviews (With them bringing in that bald guy with glasses who used to do videos with Sammy). Just so they can talk about Batman Forever and Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm (Since they never covered both films on this channel).

Honestly Spiderman 3 isnt even "Bad" so to speak, its just weaker compared to the others. Everything that is enjoyed about the first 2 is there, its just a bit buried and people arent looking for it. SpiderMan 3's biggest problem honestly is the fact that it was 1 movie, I honestly feel that if it was 2 separate movies it could have balanced venom, and sandman, and harry's story lines. Edit: I do think you guys misunderstood Black Suit peter a bit, with Martin being the closest to getting it. The reason why it feels so corny and hammy is because its meant to. The Symbiote although it made spiderman a bit stronger, it didnt make Peter Parker anything, all it did was just removed his inhibitions which made him think he was cooler, he does what a dork thinks is cool. And its pretty on track from where he was at the start for this movie. At the start of the movie he is already becoming a bit arrogant and not actually hearing others, then when he wears the suit after he kills marco that feeling of not caring seeps in more, and it feels good. He walks up straight and with a tiny bit more confidence and notice women actually checking him out, which then goes to his head even more. He stands up to J.J and doesnt take his BS which gets him the job he worked hard for years to get, Women like Ms.Grant and Gwen who probably had slight attraction and knew him longer than average women also take note of his forwardness. So all that small arrogance at the start snowballs into (what we would call it today) a form of false bravado and being toxic. The hitting on women in the street, being creepy to people, backhanded remarks, thinking he is the hottest thing ever, hurting harry, hurting MJ. We are suppose to cringe from it and feel disgusted because thats what it is, and it all makes sense if you really look at it. Considering Rami didnt want the symbiote in this movie, i think he truly made the best out of a bad situation and expanded peter's character.

People did not understand black suit Peter at all. First he was never "emo", but the opposite. He was more confident and ego driven and less whiny. And like you said, he never meant to look cool. I can't believe people forget that it is a comedy. It was never meant to be taken super serious.

I thought Thomas Haden Church's performance was completely fine. This is the 1st time I've heard anyone actually complain about it. I'm pretty sure Sam Raimi knew exactly wat he was doing with him, taking a relatively generic villain like Sandman and turning him into a much deeper and complex character. He's meant to be a realization to Peter that the world is not just good and evil, good people can do bad things but that doesn't make them necessarily evil, it just makes them human. Hence why Peter says the line "I've done terrible things too..."

They explained it in Venom: Let there be carnage. Venom said in the end credit scene in the hotel room in mexico that the symbiote is a hive mind and they all know what the others know in different timelines and universes so when the symbiote left peter and attatched with brock in spiderman 3 he then got all of peters knowledge about flint and all his other enimies. Thats why venom already knew who spiderman was when the popped up on the screen and he licked it.

As much as character development Sandman was given and his motivation, I honestly felt like he was pretty an after thought after all the chaos at the end, especially when Venom died. Despite his clear hate for Spider-Man for just standing in his way and not letting him help his daughter, he had absolutely no reason to join forces with Venom. I actually agree with Martin on that. I don’t think her reaction makes sense as I don’t feel Aunt May would be shocked at first. I think she would immediately have the heart to heart later that you’re talking about. It makes perfect sense why Peter feels guilt over it given the lesson about power and responsibility, but I don’t see most people blaming Peter or finding it hard to process at all. Just felt to me like they had to make it hard for Peter because that was the point of the film.

Topher Grace is a better Carnage in this movie than Woody Harrelson was in Venom 2. It's a shame that the studio forced Rami to include Venom because this film would have been amazing but its crazy that the studio just wrapped up all that was already established and went the reboot route because those first two are still home runs that the third one doesn't sour it. There's more of a debate though to be had with the first one, I love it but some people still come down on it for it's campiness and stunt show like fights among other things.

I'm glad Chris brought up the selfish element of MJ's character. I was somehow oblivious for years until I watched the first two films in the summer. While I think Peter and MJ do have some moments that genuinely work, a lot of it is frustrating because of how these characters treat each other, specifically, MJ who on numerous occasions is selfish, petty and plays with people's emotions including Harry, Peter and especially John who she left at the altar on their wedding day. Sure she was in love with Peter but that's still pretty terrible.

My theater experience with this one was actually fascinating and really sums it up nicely, everyone one in my packed screening was loving and laughing along, by the end of it, there was a good mix of cheers and boos. Split down the middle. Which was where I was for a very long time. Having seen it again, I look at it in a better light and see the stuff that focused on Green Goblin 2.0 & Sandman fleshed out and properly structured to the film's overarching themes of vengeance and forgiveness. Where that gets a bit muddled even today, is the inclusion of Venom and the Black Suit. You can tell the Raimis' had a problem making his inclusion feel just as seamless as the other characters, especially with admitting to not being fond of that character at all. And the tonal shifts & inconsistencies are handled haphazardly in the second half of the film. Still a solid entry for bringing this trilogy to a hopeful, bittersweet ending and you can still feel the director's style/work in this one, contrasting strongly with the sloppy mess that was Amazing Spider-Man 2.

My theater experience I think hurt this movie for me. I was around 17 and I worked at a movie theater so it was an early screening for the staff only. Everyone was older and the reactions to everything were very, very negative. That influenced me for a long time. I see this movie has gained somewhat of a cult following in recent years and I have gone back to watch it. I have grown to apprectate some things about it but I still wouldnt call it a solid entry. Id say at best its mediocre. It still a mess and with trying way too many things. It tried to cram like 6-8 subplots into one movie. A problem the other 2 films did not have. Gwen Stacey's inclusion and rectoning sandman to be uncle ben's killer I felt were unnecessary. Raimi also did not like venom and he shouldn't have been forced to use a character he clearly didnt want to. You're right though there are elements that still feel like a Raimi film. I just wish we would have been able to see Raimi's orginal vision without sony and avi arad's meddling. I will agree though it is much better then the mess that is asm2.

One of the things that makes the movie feel lazy is the random nature of how the villains are created. S2 sets up JJ’s astronaut son - why not continue that for the symbiote story? Sandman falling into a random open pit from some random lab who just happens to be conducting a random experiment? And then you never hear from those scientists again? Then it seems like a whole Venom story is fast-forwarded by a newscast that explains away things to get us into the final fight.

If you ask me years ago, I would probably agree with Korey and Chris, but now over the years and rewatching it to prepare for No Way Home, I’m with Martin on Spider-Man 3! I definitely think the movie is flawed (some that you mentioned that I agree with) and it’s easily the weakest of the Raimi trilogy, but it’s not one of the worst superhero movies ever or as bad as people say. Like for all the stuff that didn’t work and felt rushed, there’s a lot more good elements to this movie than bad like the Birth of Sandman (Also I disagree with you guys on Thomas Haden Church, I thought he was really good as Sandman), the action sequences, and the heart & charm of the first 2 still there. And I love how this movie handles the themes of forgiveness, ego, and revenge and for the most part doing it well and I like that it ended on a somber note with just Peter and MJ slow dancing instead of Spider-Man swinging, it actually brought the movie to a beautiful close. I even came around on Emo Peter/Bully Maguire, maybe it’s the memes but I went from thinking he was cringey to now finding him hilarious and I got what they were going with him. And I didn’t mind Topher Grace as Eddie Brock, despite what they did to him here, when he’s Venom yeah he’s too over the top, but when he’s Eddie sure he may not be buff like in the comics, he got the personality down and served as like a mirror version of Peter, if he lacked any morals and he had some funny moments to me. Again it does have issues for sure and I wished Sony didn’t interfered with Raimi’s vision and let him do his thing and we would’ve gotten a better movie than the one we got, but as it is the best way to describe Spider-Man 3 is that it’s a mess, but it’s a beautiful and entertaining mess and a decent conclusion to the trilogy (despite the planning for the 4th one). And I rather watch this over both Amazing Spider-Man movies, especially the 2nd one. That movie is a F**K You! to me, this movie is more of a Low Matinee.

I never thought that that Spider-Man 3 was bad. I was the few that NEVER understood why people hated the Parker dance scene so much. I though it was actually funny. Peter is kind of a geek and if developed the confidence to dance but not magically better dance skills (because that’s not how this symbiot works 😂) then yes the dance is going to come out as funny. It’s not like he danced horribly but it’s on the middle of the street and it kinda makes fun of how other movies/shows did this with girls looking like 👀 “oh who dat!?” But in this scene the girls had the opposite reaction and THAT was genius!

Eddie Brock and Venom in the church is a coincidence to be sure, but it's actually somewhat alluded to earlier in the movie. When Peter exposes him for being a fake he tells Eddie "You want forgiveness? Get religion." And as we see later in the movie, he saw Peter and Gwen go into the nightclub together moments before Peter crosses the line and realizes he need to get rid of the symbiote. So it's believeable that if they both decided to go to a church, it would be the one closest to where they both were that night.

What kind of climax was that?” Yeah, it was a climatic battle and resolution but it wasn’t until I got a bit older and rewatched it that I realized this should’ve been two movies and they shouldn’t have hyped Venom up as THE MAIN antagonist in every advertisement out out the Yin Yang.
