Guys guys, this has mostly to do with the fact that nearly everyone used composite cables back in the day. Remember the yellow red and white cables? Yeah. Those give absolute crap quality video, and has nothing to do with the source. It's a big thing in the retro gaming scene. What you need (or rather needed haha) for this quality is either component cables (red,green,blue,red and white) if you are in the USA, or RGB SCART cables if you are in Europe, with the latter being superior in clarity and colour. Google some "composite vs rgb" pictures and you'll see what I mean.

You're right. The video was linked to a forum discussion about image quality and I should have qualified it as such, not to mention deinterlaced it. I've done a dis-service to the dvd by cropping the edges to match the aspect ratio of the vhs. It's not zoomed in though, at least not intentionally, I'll have to go look at the dvd again to make sure.

Sure the resolution might be decreased, but the best that you get from a 4:3 dvd is 720x480p and widescreen dvds get it's best higher resolution especially 16:9 aspect ratio at 704x480p

You're right, the video was meant to be primarily an image quality comparison created in reference to a forum discussion. I'll make that clearer that it wasn't meant to be a straight comparison.

We're too spoiled nowadays. Back then it was just watching a movie and having fun. Nowadays it's all about pixels, and screen sizes, and surround sound etc.

Because people like to make exaggerated claims. In my 22 years of VHS viewing (I grew up with it), only a small percentage have been very poor quality. People like to find the worst VHS tapes they can think of and use those to claim that all VHS tapes are like that. In a way, some things about the Spider-Man VHS are better than the DVD. I think the color grading on the DVD version is a bit over-saturated.

It also depends on what type of VCR you use. There are some cheep VCRs that just won't output correctly. There's similar problems with cheep DVD players (slow loading times, long pauses at the layer switches, etc).

The biggest reason, I think, is that most peoples' final memories of watching something on VHS were from the early-to-mid 2000s, probably on old, worn out tapes, cheap, late model VCRs, and horribly digitally upscaled on an early LCD screen TV. If you use a good VCR, clean VHS tape and a decent analog video TV, you'll be surprised by how good VHS can look.

VHS is ok here. But DVD is better.

Spiderman only came out in early 2000s. So this is a more modern version of the VHS. When people speak of VHS, they're referring to the older version from the 80s and the 90s which was simply terrible.

DVDs can get 576 horizontal lines. Actually, it's 576p, almost HD (720p).

beavis81 Actually the poster stated that he cropped the dvd footage to line up with the vhs one (not to mention VHS is pan and scan by default, so the image may not line up with the dvd anyway if it was a widescreen version).

@Charles Campuz actually widescreen VHS was very much available by 2002. A HD VHS called DVHS even came out but it died a quick death along with HDDVD. Blu-ray came out on top. Standard DVD is still fighting strong though.

Pepsi Man yes it was but then again, it was unpopular as everyone wanted a full screen version then (also the VHS's limited resolution caused heavy quality degradation when letterboxed). So it's very likely the VHS version they used is the "fullscreen" version (pan and scan)

Okay so I was just looking for examples of DVDs being cut off height wise in comparison to VHSes. Am I wrong in thinking that? Were we supposed to not see the bottom and top portions of the VHS footage (but that they left it in because otherwise you would have to cut off even more off of the sides for the 4:3 ratio)? Do these DVD releases actually have more footage on the sides as opposed to VHS? Cause I feel like I've seen 16:9 movies where they had the same "field of view" width wise, but just had the top and bottom cut off as opposed to 4:3 VHS. Right now I'm watching Harry Potter 1 which I had on VHS as a kid, and compared it to Blu-Ray. The bottom seems mostly cut off, not the top, and it actually is wider, as in the 16:9 adds extra footage on the sides. So what was I supposed to see/ The 16:9 version or 4:3? And is that the same with every movie or does it vary? Bugs me quite a lot, cause I want to see what I'm supposed to see.

@@JorisKeijser Stargate SG-1's first 6 seasons were apparently shot with 4:3 in mind but are croppable to 16:9. Comet TV airs it in 4:3 but the DVD and Blu Ray are 16:9. Babylon 5 was shot with 16:9 in mind from the beginning. But the way the camera was shot, you don't lose out significantly if you do overscan and show it on a 4:3 TV.

It doesn't look that bad because the the frame is tiny. Blow it up to a normal tv size and it will suck donkey balls while dvd would hold up way better being double the resolution. Pixel density plays a role here.

The perspectives weren't altered, the dvd lost some height to gain width but I cropped the sides as I was only comparing picture quality.

Soooooo, a vhs with half the resulotion of a dvd is better full screen? You can't really see how bad VHS really is here because the uploader made it so tiny but anyone who's familiar with vhs and saw it full screen full frame would know vhs sucks in comparison with dvd. You seem to not notice the increased smearing and edge blur even on the small screen for VHS which means you suck at judging quality and really shouldn't talk about it.

TapesNstuffS Well that comparison is kind of moot when you consider that vinyl, from a technical standpoint, is an uncompressed and picture-perfect copy of sound waves rather than stecatto bits per second that you get with a CD, but otherwise this is a solid point.

Having a good quality copy of the film obviously helped a lot. VCR: JVC HR-S8600 - has built-in line TBC and DNR Frame TBC: Pioneer SVM-1000 - odd choice but does have a good TBC inside Capture Box: Micomsoft XCapture-1 - lots of input options, timing to the PC isn't that stable, plus s-video capture is shifted left slightly. Like many capture devices it's very sensitive to timing of frames from the VCR so a TBC is a must. Capture Software: VirtualDub - useful for lossless capture and if you need to do restoration. OBS is also good if you're doing something like PC/progressive capturing and streaming. Renderer: Vegas Pro If you're looking for recommendations on what hardware and software for video capture take a look at digitalfaq.com, I got plenty of good advice there. Another site worth checking out is videohelp.com

I'd say the VHS looks terrible and the color is much better on the DVD even if it is slightly over done. All in all Blu-ray is the best and both these formats are pointless especially for archival purposes.

@@Mariofans-gn1lu It's not better it's different.Good VHS HQ models will give an image with the same color saturation. And the movies recorded on them have better resolution while remaining backwards compatible. In the case of using s-vhs, you will get a difference that will be very close to the dvd image.

@@Jordan-fn5rj Not resolution because analog and digital cannot be treated the same. Resolution cannot therefore be a determinant, although today's standards assume it. But of course, there are films in VHS releases that are better than their digital equivalents. Remember about the types of tapes, there are several types. Commonly used, they did not offer sensational parameters not only for the image but also for the sound.

@@Nickwilde2295 VHS is the winner for Theater Sound like 360 degrees and much louder (Vol 7-9 perfect) then its DVD next Vol 25+ perfect, but the last is Blu-Ray not great sound volume (Vol 35+ the same volume as Vol 7 on VHS)

You probably had S-VHS

The dvd image has been cropped left and right as you probably noticed. From what I can gather the movie was shot with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 which isn't far off 1.78 of the 16:9 dvd. That being the case you would expect to lose part of the top and bottom of the original but it seems like more is lost here.
