Spiderverse: Movie Good, Comics Bad

The movies for spiderverse are by far and away story than the comics. The comics do so many odd and weird creative decisions. The movies thankfully do not lol.
This is my first foray into the video essay territory so I'm very nervous but I put a lot of hard work time and effort into this video so hopefully you enjoy it half as much as I enjoyed making it.

The mvc Spider-Man death is such a shame, especially because with a bit of effort they could’ve had that antagonist learn the rules of the universe, then in context hit Spider-Man with a touch of death combo, maybe even tagging in more of the family, and have that be a really cool homage if they were gonna kill him anyway. Instead he gets one shot as a gag, such a shame

15:34 One thing with the Spot that I think is important is that Across the Spiderverse knows that he’s an obscure villain and they make use of that fact. The point of his character is that he’s supposed to seem goofy and minor until the movie shows how terrifying and overpowered he is if you think about it a little bit. And the character himself has an inferiority complex over the fact that he comes across as a C-List villain.

Never trust a writer who uses gratuitous death so often. That’s the mark of a bad writer. It means they can’t get emotion out naturally so instead, their thought process is “what can we kill to make people sad”. That’s when you get MvC and Amazing Friends. People have Childhoods based on those characters. So Slott and the other writers thought to themselves “people like these characters, BOOM! EMOTION!”

I’ll always maintain the original Spider-Verse crossover was fun with nice little nods to Spider-Man’s history. Just sucks that Marvel milked the hell out of it with all the sequels and spin-offs. Venomverse, Gwenverse, Edge of Venomverse, End of GwenVerse? Did we need all of these?

What also made Spot and other iconic Spidey villains work in the movies is that they're all visually distinct and intimidating in their own way. Ock’s unique & insanly fast plastic arms, King Pin's massive WIDTH and Spots simple yet recognizable look. Yes, this is pretty much how I feel about miles in the comics, at least since he joined the main marvel universe. At least in the oringinal ultimate marvel, he was a VERY young spidey, 12-13, even younger than Peter was when he started. Now it just feels like theirs fanservice without actually having any service to deliver. Miles in the movies at least gives him more pathos with his art skills and family dynamic with both his parents.

Yeah the spider-verse comics were just bad and garbage from the very beginning, mostly because unlike the movies which had a heart and soul put into to those movies, and had a great story to tell with Miles Morales Spider-Man and his story of discovering anyone can wear the mask and be Spider-Man, the comics on the other hand felt like a big slap in the face for people like me who love Spider-Man and his characters. Specifically a character I knew and love growing up is Spider-girl mayday parker the daughter of Peter parker and Mary jane and the second I get to see her again in comics, she immediately gets treated like garbage 24/7 in this entire event that it isn't even funny but just sad and depressing and a big slap in the face for us Mayday parker spider-girl fans but that's just my opinion. My point is in general is that I always maintained that these Spider-verse comics weren't made out of love for Spider-Man and his characters but just a way for slott to just kill off fan favorites for no real reason just for shock value for shock value sake which isn't good writing or good storytelling but just lazy and freaking garbage in my opinion.

"The books and the movies vary greatly." This has been a fact ever since the first comic book movie came out and, for some reason, people still act like the movies being different from the books is a bad thing.
@agenerichuman
@agenerichuman 10 месяцев назад
Yeah. While on one hand I see why people want faithful adaptations of things they love. I think it's misguided though. People don't realize that not everything translates from one medium to another. Sometimes that's to a story's determent but sometimes it's to its favor. Personally I don't like when creators in one medium (often authors) will tell creators in other media how to do their job. You see that a lot. Some artist will be upset their vision was "ruined" because it got turned into a movie. Their vision wasn't ruined. It's still in the book. Their vision wasn't the movie. If it was they would have made a movie, not a comic book.

Usually it is, especially for comics, bc then they try to retroactively change the comics. And if the best comic stories were adapted with some consideration for the source material, movie fans would enjoy that every bit as much as the stuff that doesn't care one bit about the source material. So why threaten to damage what comic fans love when you can make something that both movie and comic fans would enjoy? Not to mention Spiderverse is very much the exception, not the norm. Typically the movie adaptations of superhero comics are not as good, the characters are less intricate and they struggle to tell low stakes stories effectively (a reasonable amount of low stakes stories are essential for an interconnected universe). If comic adaptations were like book adaptations, there wouldn't be much ti complain about.Yes, movies about books get people irritated by difference, but they still feel like adaptations. Comic adaptations are way more extreme. They mostly just put the names of characters and plot lines on things that bear little to no resemblance and just come up with some random new and unrelated story
@Ash-Winchester
@Ash-Winchester 10 месяцев назад
@@rickrivers2021 "bc then they try to retroactively change the comics" How the fuck does having the story for a comic book movie change the comics? That has literally never happened. "So why threaten to damage what comic fans love when you can make something that both movie and comic fans would enjoy?" They're not damaging anything. Wtf are you talking about? "They mostly just put the names of characters and plot lines on things that bear little to no resemblance and just come up with some random new and unrelated story" Congratulations. You just described every comic book storyline ever. If you honestly have a problem with movies being based on comics differing from the source material, I can't wait to see your reaction that the source material can differ from itself.
@rickrivers2021
@rickrivers2021 9 месяцев назад
@ColeGray-il6tm when something happens in a cbm, the comics very often will change things to try and match the movies. 'Brand synergy' is an extremely common complaint among comic fans. And yes, this causes there to be inconsistency in how things are written in comics. And yes this bothers many, many readers. What makes DC and especially Marvel comics special is their unique approach to continuity. You follow a characters life through decades and decades of story, watching it evolve and unfold over time. There have always been writers who come in and write things with little concern for continuity or the character's history. Those are bad writers. Fans of the characters generally don't like such runs. It's just a reality that that will happen from time to time But since the CBM movies really took off, runs like this have become more and more frequent, and worse, caused not necessarily by an occasional lazy or misinformed writer but often directly pushed by editorial to morph things to be more like the movies. The erroneous logic is then movie fans will pick up the comics and like them more. Longtime loyal readers apparently matter less than the hypothetical new readers Marvel and DC fail to market to anyways. Comic book movies should treat the source material with similar respect to book movies. Tweaks are fine, heck it doesn't even need to directly adapt a particular story. But capturing the characters right and recognizing the core themes that make them work is important. Comics shouldn't be playing catchup with the movies, disregarding decades of lore to reform to the needless changes that movies flippantly make. Instead, the writers of films (and shows) should be expected to really dig into and understand the source material. They have power of these characters future. So they have a responsibility to do right by those characters

I second you about the deaths in Spider-verse. I've been a big 2099 fan for most of my life, and when I read he'd be joining the series Exiles (later revealed to be a variant of him) I picked up the bok. Exiles is infamous for killing off it's characters when they want to rotate the roster, but surprisingly this Miguel managed to land in an alternative reality, found love and left the team. He was, to my understanding, one of the few characters to not die when leaving that book. I was initially disappointed but glad he escaped that fate. Then, about a decade later, someone at Marvel remembered he existed and had him killed off in a prelude comic. I'm probably one of the only people who cared about this version of the character but it still irked me due to how well I felt his story ended.

I would definitely not call "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" a love letter. Focusing on your sample, in order to make Miles better, spider-mens from all over the multiverse were exposed as stupid losers. We recall the moment that Miguel was reworked with a clear bias for a Superior in character, it looked very unpleasant, as he splashed out rude words on the train. This is something you don't expect from a character who has destroyed an entire universe by mistake. A better option would be to let Miguel calmly say that the powers Miles received belong to another character from another universe, and they need to be returned for balance. And so the creators exposed all the spider-men as stupid idiots who, with all their capabilities and skills, could not catch one beginner Miles Morales. Come on, it wouldn't have been possible with the chase, Miguel could have simply blocked access to the teleportation device in order to isolate Miles in this universe, but this was not done either. One could go the way of the Spider-Man MCU : since Miles's powers did not belong to him initially, it could be done so that he loses them at the end of the second part, and in the third he will create a costume combining the designs of Spider-Man and Prowler, thereby proving that he can be a hero and help others, even without these abilities. That he may not be worthy of such powers, but he deserves to be a hero.

To anyone who doesn’t thing the 90’s TAS series didn’t run future adaptations as a bible, pay attention. You bout to learn. -Venom: Variant Comics (a RU-vidr who claims to be a comics expert) once deducted points from the Venom movie for inaccuracies. Asking why did the movie make him a reporter for the Daily Globe instead of a photographer for the Daily Bugle. He didn’t realize Eddie Brock was always a reporter for the Daily Globe. People always think rival photographer for the Bugle cause of the 90’s animated. Which carried over into the Raimi movies, the PS1 game, and even an Easter egg in the PS4 Spider-Man game. -Symbiote/Klyntar: Did you know in the original comics the symbiote did not make Peter more angry or aggressive. That came from the 90’s series. Which carried on to almost every adaptation of the alien suit since. That it makes you so angry and violent. Never the case in the comics. -The Lizard: Curt Connors in most adaptations now is always depicted as being Peter Parker’s former teacher. That came from the 90’s animated series. In the comics Peter never met Curt until he flew out to Florida to stop The Lizard for the first time. Blade. The biggest change the 90’s TAS had over a character. Comic book Blade was not originally a “Daywalker.” He still had the same origin, with his pregnant mother being attacked by a vampire, but it didn’t turn him into a halfbreed. It made him immune to vampirism. Hell, who’s the most iconic character in the Blade’s franchise, besides Blade himself and Dracula? Whistler right? Everyone loves Whistler. Whistler doesn’t exist in the comics. He was created for the 90’s cartoon. The Blade movies took its entire inspiration from the 90’s Spider-Man cartoon. As much as people hate it, Blade Trinity, while in no way 100% accurate, comes the closest to being comic accurate out of the trilogy

I think the great irony about the Spider-Verse films is that, with their approach to visualization, they don't even need to be about the Spider-Verse. I think the potential is there to use the first film as a means of introducing a wider audience to the idea of there being different takes on the Spider-Man character existing in different works at the same time - characters who aren't Peter Parker, or who are but imagine him in a different time or setting. Something I sincerely hope the Spider-Verse films can do going forward is to have enough faith in its visual storytelling to maintain an audience's interest in a single hero and world over the course of a whole film. I'd like for them to not feel like they have to triple down on the multiverse just to compete with all the imitators they've been getting since that first film came out.

The over all story from the comics is much better than all this in fighting with miguels team and miles team the inheritors hunting them, and everything is just so much better in my opinion in every way the movies are good but like in comparison mid to me as a spiderverse adaptation as stand alones 10/10 I really would’ve preferred a real adaptation
