CURRY AND CHIPS THE COMPLETE SERIES (15) is considered to be one of the most controversial situation comedies ever committed on television screens. Written by John Speight (Till Death do us Part) and based on an idea by Spike Milligan, this notorious series reflects the widespread and overt prejudices of its time. CURRY AND CHIPS attempts to confront bigotry in daily life by caricaturing it, and will inevitably shock in its language and single-minded focus on race. Forty years after its initial screening, the series is made available for the first time in DVD format, available to buy on 19th April 2010, RRP £14.99.

I really want to get the dvd, I love Milligan's Humor, and I don't find this racist at all, instead, I see it as taking the piss out of racists.

Spine milligna was born in India , his dad was in the military , then he came home to sunny catford . Probably the root of this sketch ?

It is to do with misplaced sensitivity, you are right in your second post, I think. PC is an term that is often misused. Melting had an even shorter run six years later. Spike made Melting Pot, a 6 parter but it was dropped after one. The saddest omission from the history of British comedy was Mind Your Language. A programme fondly remembered by those it depicted, fondly. And dropped for the same reason you identify as the reason for this. Citizen Khan is the anodyne compromise.

It was a mistake to have Spike play the Pakistani guy. I love him. He was a genius, but they should have got a Pakistani actor. Then the anti-racism and humour would have hit home much better.

Spike was born and raised in India so he wasn’t just any old actor taking off a Pakistani. Throughout his career he often played an Indian or Pakistani character and was very clever in taking the mickey out of many of the racial stereotypes of the time.

@@NZLatic Preaching to the converted here. My point was more about getting the ideas across in a better way. Spike is the single biggest influence on my sense of humour, it's just that some of the stuff could have been done better.

@chris12dec It's partly a satire of this but more a satire of Love Thy Neighbour. I doubt if enough people were exposed to this to create an impact. The only mistake Spike and Sykes made was casting Spike in that role. If there was instead an Asian actor with an Irish accent it would have run for years. All the caucasian characters are made out to be idiots. Caucasian actors playing racial stereotypes was already becoming a problem by then. That's why It Ain't Half Hot Mum never gets repeated.

Always leaving mess: Take Top Cat for example. He thought he was the best cat, and he wasn't even a real cat; he was a stereotype. Accurate one too if you ask me.
