I think this silent is absolutely cool, but when I finally build my dream bike I'm going to get one of those i9 hubs, like the Hydra that just sounds like a freaking banshee. I think that sounds absolutely awesome, it's near-instantaneous engagement and like a previous comments or said you won't have to carry bells or anyting for riding near bears or moose or elk or hikers.
I think it might be from driving cars, but just hearing nothing but tyres and the ground doesn't suit me. I love hearing a high engagement hub whizzing away in the mix.
I don't know when loud ass hubs became synonymous with quality (eeeer, yes I do, I blame you, Chris King!), or people wanting to pretend they're on motos, but I'm all for silent freehubs. I'm sad Shimano abandoned their Scylence, but excited to see others catch on. Tire noise and nature is all I want to hear on a ride.
The shimano sylence hubs are available in the new 12 speed microspline. i just bought one going to lace it up tomorrow. $115 xt rear hub, $55 front. The front hub is trash bearings so rough needed to polish cup and cones to smoothen it, but the rear is pretty smooth and silent.
@@Jaymachine The 8100 hubs aren't actually Sylence (you won't see official marketing for Sylence on them), but they're still pretty quiet (as are the new XTR hubs). They probably weren't as quiet as Shimano hoped so they stopped marketing it. My last front Shimano road hub was like that too...very notchy. I usually just run new Shimano hubs as-is from the box for a couple hundred miles, factory grease and preload...this let's the races lap themselves in. Then I'll do full rebuild to get the contaminated grease out, re-grease, and do final adjustment.
Cup & Cone Thanks,I was curious about that. Its definitely a spin off of the sylence hubs design then, its not the normal paw engagement. you feel the complete disengagement and there are no clicks. But at low speed it comes back into engagement and you hear the clicks. I’ll crack them open after i get some miles on them and see whats going on for sure.
I've always enjoyed quiet hubs. Been on Shimano XTR, Saint hubs and DT Swiss 240s and even used the Shimano silent clutch hubs but those felt too spongy and didn't last long. Saved up for these hubs and they've been pretty bombproof. 3 years later and still no issues. When I'm out in nature I prefer to listen to the sounds of nature rather than add noise pollution with noisy hubs.
The silence is the icing. The first layer of the cake is the drag-free performance. They are noticeably faster on downhill sections. The rest of the cake is the instant engagement. Unbelievably nice on technical climbs while ratcheting those pedals. I rode these for three years. Bought a new Evil Offering in June and HATE the noisy hubs. My Onyx/We Are One Unions arrive today! I've never met anyone who went back to draggy chainsaw hubs after riding Onyx.
That is super nice! Glad to see effort put into making the hubs silent rather than loud like most of the other popular hubs. It seems that loud hubs are something of a source of pride among MTB riders. They brag about it often too.
@@piciu256 Any hub is loud (and will be less reliable) if you don't maintain it. Hope hubs are popular because Hope's customer service, quality control, value for money and reliability are first class. 'Overhyped' implies they aren't as good as people say... Yeah, there are better hubs out there, but you will struggle to find better hubs for the same money. Have you ever owned a Hope hub?
The pros go to great lengths to make there bikes silent so they can focus on what’s important.. going faster.. this hub will be on my next bike for sure.
Just installed the newer Vespyr on my Ripmo build. Best hubs ever! Let's me listen to how my bike is behaving, instant pedal engagement, and zero drag. When im coasting a fire road my bike accelerates like mad compared to my buddies with other hubs. Love it!
One huge difference I discovered with Onyx hubs compared to the I9 torch is how much easier the onyx is on the body. last year when I put an onyx on my yeti SB130 it made me realized how much the consistent buzzing vibrations was coming through the bike frame to the body. After many a 30+ mile ride I am way less beat with the lack of vibration compared to my I9 hubs.
I have these hubs on 2 bikes and I love them. Sure they weight a bit more, but I absolutely love the zen of silent hups. Just me, the wind, and tires shredding the ground. And the instant engagement is addictive. Hard to go back to traditional hubs after. Feels like they are broken or something. I'm a big fan of Onyx.
Strongly agree! Good ol’ days are more fun when few legit mtb brands are available. We even use short cage Shimano Sora coz there is no Saint/Zee available yet. 😂
Been running these hubs for 2 years. The silent running is only the second best part.... the instant torque is a game changer. Oh, and the total lack of maintenance required, despite going through 2 freewheels (225 lbs and poorly coordinated riding eats parts)
@@denoki well I dont like hikers who don't pay attention on trail, and I also don't want to hit any animals so its nice to let things know you're coming.
I fully appreciate the concept of silent hubs on a singletrack; however, where I live, pedestrians on cyclepaths tend to ignore or be aggressive towards to the legal signal of ringing the bell - a backpedal with loud hub works much better: scared/confused/surprised, stepping aside right away :D
I race with onyx hubs NBA Max and I would not go back to anything else.... make such a big difference specially when rolling downhill to grab that engagement it's instantaneous like there is no like trying to catch up with the drivetrain.... People that have less points of engagement definitely know that..... but even at a hundred and twenty points of engagement you still feel that trying to catch up feeling.... Definitely not with onyx hubs..... There's another company called stealth but they only do BMX .... And I'm definitely not sold on their system yet... Obviously I bought the onyx
Just serviced outer bearings in my newly bought, used old rim with Ritchey ZERO System hub. And it spins without any noise and very similar time to yours :)
Great video! Killer hub. Could ask you what model hub that is? I am considering upgrading but am so confused with the plethora of different hubs, plus the Onyx website seems to show only black hubs. TY!!!
Just wait until you meet someone who doesn't pay even a slight attention on the track. Especially in holiday season where there will be a lot recreational cyclists on the track (most of them are first-timer and REEAAAALLY LOVE to stop randomly on wherever they want) i will stick with my loud ass wheelset.
@@fadelabdurrahman3469 amen man I rock i9 hydras with oil, tons of engagement and loud as a swarm of bees. My original post was to see what type of reaction I would get out of the peons. Hail hydra!
Does that mean that hubs that sounds like a beehive would have more friction than the Onyx silent ones? Therefore, hubs like Industry 9, Chris king, Hope etc wouldn't spin 'forever' like Onyx?
Wrapping a bit of electrical tape around the cables where they enter/exit the frame WHILE you pull the cables tight does the trick. I also put some 3M Mastic tape between the cables and cable holders for some extra grip.
Silent hubs are the best for me when hangout with the bois on track. But loud hubs are great as well. Just wait until you meet someone who doesn't pay even a slight attention on the track. Especially in holiday season where there will be a lot of recreational cyclists on the track (most of them are first-timer and REEAAAALLY LOVE to stop randomly on wherever they want), i will stick with my loud ass wheelset.
I once saw a biker with silent hubs dig their front wheel on the back of a recreational biker who was frolicking on a bike trail with heavy traffic. That was the most glorious thing i had seen that day. In my opinion that's why people use silent hubs, it's an excuse to run over milk drinkers.
Nothing to blame, pretty quiet(Well that quiet, that you can hear ants fighting), but dik about that spinning, my Mavic Deemax DH 26" Lasted about 3 minutes and 26 seconds (We measured the time), but good hubs for sure :P
I wonder how long you could make it spin in a vacuum? That would eliminate any air resistance from the tyres and spokes, but still keep the weight on the wheels to keep spinning for longer
silent hubs all the way any day for me. I don't hate hubs that make noise but most of the noisy ass hubs of today don't even sound good. They're just noisy. Rarely do i find noisy hubs that actually make a good sound.
I’ll take non-instant engagement lower-end quiet hubs over instant engagement buzz hubs all day long. I’m just a mediocre rider, not a racer. But if I was a racer I would get hubs like these.
used it since 2019.. it did spin for a damn long time when i first used it ... then it gotten very draggy, like sticky , i've gotten the bearing changed 4 times same issue, last week , i hand cranked it backwards there was a very heavy stiction to it then went through it but the back wheel would follow my backwards hand crank like its a fixed gear
Nope, the tiny bit of better rolling resistance makes no difference when your actually controlling the bike with your momentum. These will not change your ride at all in terms of speed, you controlling the bike has much bigger impact
That’s really cool and I wonder what it would feel like on a silent bike. I think I would end up doing my head on being able to hear every cable slap, chain slap and random creak I couldn’t hear before. I’m actually thinking of putting some playing cards in my spokes... people hear you coming.
Yay!!! the error is over, coming up next week, smaller wheels for more grip and better turning and we look at some new bars that don't hit all the trees on the trail!
I have a king.. Which is very quite... A hope.. An i9 older version... And a onxy... Onxys are by far the best hub I've dealt with... Easy to service and the engagement is like nothing else. If you want quite hubs that roll for days these are them. I'm 210lbs and use a 11to36t cassette... I smash this hub and it doesn't flinch.
I have a question. Can you tellme if onix stops faster then dt o ck when you are coasting and pedal backward at the same time Can you help me with that please. I have mavic st 2012 mtb hubs and when im coasting and i pedal backward at the same time it stops so soon. Even sooner than a 20 dollars shimano hub. Thank you.
@@reynerlara5353 I don't really pedal backwards while coasting so I can't answer that question, but I can make an assumption: This hub doesn't use pawls so there is zero friction when not engaged added with the ceramic bearings i would say this rolls the best out of anything else on the market. Also the bearings and hub needs a break in, I noticed after some miles the hub got even better.
I pack my hubs with automotive hub grease, it nearly 100% silences standard ratchets. Been on one bike for 3 years and the grease is still bright blue, still just as quiet as the day I don't it.
I want these for a single speed build on a track frame. I wish they actually made a SS hub for 120mm axle length. Would be awesome. On a single speed the power engagement of this hub and extreme low friction would likely mean my going back up to a 48t chaining. It's a shame I have to consider buying a custom frame just to fit these hubs.
