Philip King in Cork to explore the genesis of the incomparable Jimmy Crowley's first album with Stoker's Lodge, and the programme was crammed with fascinating local information and musical insights.
In the early seventies, Jimmy and Stokers were approached to make an album. Making an album back then was big news and their first, "The Boys of Fairhill", produced by Micheál Ó Dómhnaill of the Bothy Band made a huge impact-it even entering the pop charts for a time! The band, consisting of Chris Twomey on vocals, autoharp and concertina, Mick Murphy on mandolin and mandola, Johnny "Fang" Murphy on guitar and harmonium and Crowley on vocals and bouzouki . It was soon augmented by young piper, Eoghan "Rabies" Ó Riabhaigh.
They went on to record their second album, "Camphouse Ballads" which received serious acclaim at home and in Britain and America where now they were in much demand for folk festivals and tours. Stokers Lodge recorded a "Greatest Hits" album, "The Best of Stokers Lodge" and numerous television shows before breaking up in the early eighties when Jimmy's repertoire began to transcend and his song-writing and influences took on many different shades.
