If you have an incomplete SCI, you've likely experienced synergy patterns in full flexion & extension: hip, knee, ankle joints all flex or extend at once. These can be functional for standing, but reflexes are not voluntary and make any kind of refined movement very challenging.
🌀 Want to bridge, kneel or walk? Looking for smooth, voluntary control? You'll have to override these explosive reflexes. 🌀
The most effective way to train this is by breaking the synergy pattern. Do motions that require 1 or 2 joints to flex while the other(s) extends. You can't "kick the ball" - hip flexion with knee & ankle extension - on reflexes alone, so it's a good motion to override the synergy pattern.
🌉 Bridging is another example - hip flexion, knee & ankle extension. Be sure to focus on pulling the heel back while pressing the hips up. Now you're incorporating neuro-differentiation in your regimen!
