Welcome to Soton Brain Hub - the brain explained!
In this video we take a look at spinal nucleus V and the tract which carries sensory information along the trigeminal nerve and the trigeminothalamic tract to reach the cerebral cortex. We also consider what would happen if there were a lesion of the tract.

Thank you! quick qn? I know the function of spinal nucleus of spinal nucleus of trigeminal nerve but what is the function of tract of spinal nucleus of trigeminal nerve? Thanks

why is damage to Spinal trigeminal nuc V lead to ipslateral alteration of pain and temperature on the face when the path decussates in the medulla and goes contralaterally? im confused

Although the tract crosses eventually, the nucleus is on the same side to where the lack of sensation will be experienced on the face. E.g left CNV synapses with the left sided nucleus. Therefore, we can say that the location of the lesion and the side of the face where the loss of sensation will be felt are the same. So, it is described as ipsilateral despite the fact that eventually the processing occurs by the opposite side of the brain. Hope that makes sense?

@@SotonbrainhubUk1 Is this a proper way of understanding it: Bc the lesion is where input of the sensory information is coming in, we've knocked out the ability of processing to occur. So the pain would have to be ipsilateral bc there's essentially no nucleus for there to even be a possibility of contralateral effects. Is this correct?

Where would you say the spinal tract V originates?

Back then we just needed a better microphone! Making free resources is not great for when you need to buy stuff which benefits your audience. Sorry about that.
