I'm a jazz musician but their ripping on jazz had me dying. It was hilarious. "Jazz is a mistake" "they teach it in schools!" "Miles... Davis? what's he doing?"
I can’t decide if it’s more impressive or terrifying how effortless this is. This is the absolute pinnacle of improv. It’s the kind of genius you don’t even aspire to; you just imbibe and enjoy.
I saw these fellas play Utrecht in 1978 and it changed my life. I mean, I wasn't born for another 9 years and I've never been to Utrecht but I think that just proves my point.
If you can remember their gigs then you weren't really there and so it stands to reason that the converse would also be true and that you would have had to be absent or even preferably unborn to really savor the ST experience (ST stands for "Spinal Tap") 👍
Anyone who truly understands and "gets" the humour of Spinal Tap is someone that I very quickly become friends with. Its almost like a litmus test when meeting new people.
@@heathercollins4432 watch Viv & Mick closely during the Duke Fame hotel lobby scene in the movie, they both start to lose it & turn away from the camera
Actually, this reminds me of my older cousins at family reunions. They could talk like this all day about anything. Funniest people I knew. Unfortunately, they are no longer alive.
Their Acceptance Speech would be Eleven Minutes, in duration and the Hall of Fame only goes to 10, Minutes, in duration, in regards to Acceptance Speeches.
Did you not know that the spinal tap movie was 100% impro for their dialogues ? They only had a basic plotline and stayed in character most of the tour
"I remember in 1966-'67, there was this great influx of songs about the flower power movement..." "Mmm-hmm, there was an influx, and then a reflux." "A reflux, yes. Well that was because of the acid." "That's right." That's suspiciously genius. I absolutely cannot believe that wasn't written beforehand. Either way it's brilliant.
@@Kris.G so beautiful isn't it. i was on a train just pissing myself with all these people staring at me. i could watch hours of these three. how many drummers spontaneously combusted???
A lot of improv is keeping jokes in your pocket for later. It's also possible that that he was hoping someone else would pick up on "acid reflux." It's not as funny if you do the rejoinder yourself, but you can.
Thanks for your comment. I have always 100% assumed they were British, coming from the UK myself.. pretty extraordinary - I have double checked- yes they're Americans. Wtf 😅
@@walterlowe7252yes - he’s British-American and spent a lot of time in England over the years because his dad is from there. In a twist straight out of Spinal Tap, his family is from nobility and his noble title is “5th Baron Haden-Guest.”
There "kind of" is a film based on that idea. "A Spinal Tap Reunion: The 25th Anniversary London Sell-Out" from -92 is mostly a Concert (an actual one) mixed with shorter interviews, and some references to the original "This is Spinal Tap".
Agree...perhaps they shouldn't call it Spinal Tap so there is no diluting of the legacy and these old guys could be trying to pass themselves off as a new band, even a cover band on a cruise ship, after getting a few claps on the ship decide to start a band and tour. Hard to think of how much lower point than a puppet show however. Maybe if trailer parks had concerts
I just rewatched the "This is Spinal Tap" again for the millionth time the other day and , as always, it holds up amazingly and probably always will. It is as close to a perfect comedy as you can humanly get. A true classic. Please don't tarnish it with a sequel.
"Druids running show business." "Heterosectional" "Do you ever get any feedback?" "I could turn it up!" I had to stop crying before I could type this comment on this section. Pure genius.
I'm amazed how they nail that non descript southern England suburban accent with a hint of mid Atlantic lilt. Jagger, Keef, Bowie, Beck, Page... they've all got it.
Nigel's unshakeable belief in his own higher intelligence is wonderful 'I've done some research,..' offset by the 'no one's at home 'face when he's not actually talking
Well, he based much of the character on a really dumb (or stoned) bass player who he saw, in the mid 70's, argue with his manager over his missing bass guitar.
The most amazing thing about these three actors is that all of it is improvised. They bounce off each other and go with what ever each of the others are saying. Very good actors (and comedians) to do this.
I think the most amazing thing is that before they even started filming Spinal Tap, they created a whole biography for all the band members and the band. This is why it all seems so natural: the discography may be fictional, but they know it so well it might just as well be real.
St. Hubbins :"I remember in 1966 here was great influx of song about flower power." Smalls : "Then there was a reflux later on." St. Hubbins : "That was because of the acid." ...high end comedy right there.
We played 'Short And Sweet' for two hours, it's all about how long you can do it, without being..... dead. And it's also just one chord, good ol' E chord, good enough for your granddad, good enough for you! That was 59 minutes of my time well spent. Thanks David, Nigel & Derek.
Unfortunately, Fred Willard left us. He was fantastic as well. The whole troupe that are in the “mockumentary” films are all hilarious. I love all of them. A Mighty Wind just might be equal to Spinal Tap.
Nigel: "It's a philosophical conundrum really." David: "It's important to wear a conundrum in this day and age." Derek: "They'll pass them out at school." LOL!
"-Nigel had this terrible nightmare where the devil was trying to make me eat a set of drums..." -"Yeah, it was very vivid, I remember waking up sweating, which I do anyway"
Good to see one of the best bands ever, still going strong!!! great talent never dies , and they are still so humble ( haven't let fame and fortune go to their heads ) Can't wait for their greatest hits volume VII to come out ?? I know I'll be first in line at the supermarket to get the cassette.
This is satire at it's finest... They do this whole gig and, never break into a laugh at themselves... Wonderful acting job all through... I don't think I have ever laughed so hard as the first time I saw the video on "Break Like the Wind"... I still can't even say the name without a smile and, chuckle...
Nigel: "The more you hear it, the less you hear it." Derek: "That's right." David: "Well the more you hear it, the less you need to hear it." Brilliant!
"How did you learn how to speak duck? There's not a trace of a human accent to it." lol these three were brilliant working off of one another's statements.
This is brilliant , can't believe how great they do a middle class London Accent , I remember first seeing the film as a 15 year old and laughed out loud, which is rare for me
These guys are amazing, and they have "tapped" into a brilliant concept in that it doesn't matter how old they get, they can still be Spinal Tap, washed up and living in the past, because that just makes it funnier! We have real rocknrollers who are in their 70's, so Tap can keep going forever!
It's not even a general "British-ish" accent, McKean and Guest do South East London accents and Shearer does Midlands which has got more nasal as the years go on - actual character progression.
he isnt half english--he was born in the usa, lives here, and has a newyork/manhattan accent. He is a jewish kid from new york city.He does have a dad who was an english lord so i guess you could say he was somehow british.
