'spindles aren't kindergarten for spinning wheels' So much this. I love this, thank you for stating it so clearly! I've been asked so many times if I'm 'ready' for a wheel when I've been spindle spinning. Yes I use both, and yes both have overlapping skillsets. But they are different tools and can do different things! Much love to all the undervalued spindle spinners out there ❤

I genuinely believe the secret of long term patience to do a project well is taking crafty detours of enthusiasm...as long as you don't take too many and never finish 😉 Working on something I don't have the enthusiasm for is a surefire way to mess it up and anger past me. 😂

I'm the ruler of the land of multiple projects. I start to feel claustrophobic and caged if I try to make myself do one thing at a time. Obviously I can get hyper-focused on one thing or another and complete a whole project in a day, but it can't be a rule to only do one thing until it is done. I'm really working on deprogramming my brain from the NT assumption that "consistency' is the only recipe for success in skill building. Obviously consistency is necessary, but I'm realizing that consistency for me looks nothing like consistency for NT folks. I'm chaotically consistent. Spontaneously consistent? I don't know how to verbalize it, but yes, I always take the fun detours when they present themselves.

Also I want to see an episode where you go to a sheep farm and meet some sheep and talk about what to look for in a fleece (and please snuggle a little lamb for us)

The word “should” is a fantastic killer of joy, if you ask me. I think that is why some of my projects get put down for so long and not finished. Once I start feeling that I “should” work on it, rather than wanting to work on it, all the joy drains away …

I'm literally taking a crafty detour this very moment

"crafty detours", I like that concept. I do a lot of sewing, and NOW I finish things. Sometimes they wind up back on the UFO piles because they need revisiting, and I ised to get 3/4 of the way through a project then get bored and start something else, so my Rule for Starting A New Project is that I can do all the planning I want in between and while doing other things, but before scissors cut fabric, I must do two mending projects, complete or revisit one UFO and darn whatever socks have accumulated in the darning heap (and now to get back to meadmaking, I'm adding bottle washing sessions to the list). My crafty detours are often quick littel projects that interrupt my queue because I need a thing for a reason, or someone's birthday came up on me faster than I'd thought it would, etc, like the wool handwarmers I made last fall out of horse blanket scraps when it was too warm to wear full gloves but I was getting carpal tunnel twinges from the cold steering wheel in the car. And I have other small crafty projects that interrupt sewing, which seems to be my current main hobby, like beadwork and painting miniatures, meadmaking, armourmaking, and learning how to paint different kinds of flowers to decorate homemade beehives, making stuff for the garden... yeah too many hobbies, too little space and time. I generally have one longterm project on the go at a time (currently, tablet weaving because it bugs my wrists to do too much at a time) and probably will finish it before I start another one (I bought colour changey yarn again so probably will crochet another bedspread, or maybe a smaller throw, though I don't use crocheted throws in the living room because somebunny with teeth leaves polarfleece alone but the same cannot be said for acrylic, polyester or cotton). I rarely set myself deadlines so I sew when I feel like it, and if I'm not feeling it, no pressure, no guilt. And it's usually handsewing so it takes me a while, but now that I'm not arguing with a demonspawn sewing machine and have a couple machines that will do their things without frequent arguments, turns out I rather enjoy the process, rather than just tolerating it so I can have the thing I want at the end. I have spun with a spinning wheel and found it not too difficult (it was not a lot and it was a long time ago but I think I grasped the whole drafting thing pretty quicky), but I'm a klutzy disaster and have been too chicken to try spindle spinning. Very interested in those triangle looms, gonna have to research those if and when I do finally start spinning something, I want to do some weaving but it's gonna be a wile before I can justify the space for a full loom. I've got a bag of 3d printed loom parts for a very small travel loom but haven't assembled it yet.

if I were to start more than 2 projects at a time I'd never finish anything 😂 I find that forcing myself through to the end is a lot more satisfying than leaving WIPs everywhere

Honestly, sometimes I wish I could just stick to one project, but that is absolutely not how my brain works AT ALL 🤣 I need variety, projects at different stages for different levels of concentration. Everything gets finished (or frogged) eventually. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also that headscarf project is so cute and a great small project. I have the goal to use some of my early handspun with small accessories. Hopefully by the end of the year.

from Gerry- I love beginning! It's so exciting. I have at least 10 small quilt tops that need to be put together and quilted. It's my least favorite part. I do get things done, but the finished pile is much smaller than in progress pile. Be blessed.

I never have more than one project of a type going at once - i find it difficult to keep track. But i will absolutely have different kinds of projects on the go. Aka: yes to sewing a skirt and knitting a pair of socks, no to knitting a pair of socks and a hat at the same time

That bandana is gorgeous! What a great idea for small projects that would also make lovely gifts. There would also be scope for sewing or crocheting triangles together to make larger items, so long as the triangles were right angle ones.

I have a spinning to tablet weaving project I am working on. Finished one color, and got started on the second but man did I get sick of it. So I moved to patching up an old skirt, and now I’m plying some doubles from some singles that have been resting literally forever and when I finish that I’m going to use the finished product to learn how to use a lucet. 😂

I'm a writer, when I have to work on only one writing project I end up doing more knitting/spinning projects at once. I usually have two or three projects going at once (I have two knitting project bags and one spinning project bag for my spindles). But right now I'm working really hard on one book and I have four knitting projects and two spins going, haha!

Oh geez...I have 5 projects, mostly started....from 3 years ago.......and there they sit.😂😂

I keep at least 3 projects going at one time. By randomly moving between them the tend to stay fresh.

I would like for you to look up Tambour embroidery - you're right, there's so much potential! Switching projects is so normal for me 😂 deadlines get me finishing older ones.

Could you do a video lesson showing step by step continuous strand weaving, including color change in the project? I know there's videos out there but you do such a great job at explaining/showing detail.

Im an evrywhere peson all the time lol it can take years for me to finish a project, but on the spinning side, i finish lots of spinning hahahahha xx

I started with a Turkish, but it got annoying because the one I got didn’t have the weight I needed. So I forgot all about it. Then, one renfaire, I found a top whirl drip spindle with a hook, and some beautifully died roving and I was lost. I have found that I prefer to spin with a simple supported spindle, but that’s after years of using the first. So don’t be afraid to experiment with different types if you can find them inexpensively.

Ohh very cool idea with the crochet edges!!! And i love my Turkish spindle!!! My next project with it is spinning horse hair "mane" hair so i can use it as a warp thread for my peg loom... which im not done building but its been a goal for me for a long time!!!

Beautiful yarn! And that lazy kate! If my dad were alive I would ask him to make one for me! Instead I use a plastic basket that sort of works. Like you, I take project commercial breaks before going back to it. (Sometimes its a forever YFO). I was inspired by you to knit a handspun Flax sweater and took a break halfway down the body. I have been weaving on an old 5" pin loom with small batches if yarn spun on supported spindles. Your fault I have so many of them now. I also bought a table rh loom... your fault. It is waiting for me to get up the courage to try it. I want to make placemats and towels. Alas, this adventure will slow soon bc back to school we go 😕

That was a really interesting video- I really like your bandana... as to unfinished projects!? Where do I begin? How about the toile for a pair of pants I cut out about seven months ago, or the hat I started knitting a year ago, or the weaving project that is sitting on my loom right now- (here I am going to give myself a break as I just started weaving a month ago). I don't detour on projects if I'm knitting or crocheting them. But I do if I'm drawing or doing counted cross stitch, mostly because counted cross stitch can be very mentally taxing after a while and drawing takes a lot of focus and I need to step back. Knitting and crocheting has become an absentminded thing at this point, but I'm making my first coat! Though I ran out of yarn and just learned it's been discontinued...

I typically have more than one project going at one time. I just finished 3 cardigans. They were from the same pattern with slight variations & using different filters. They all had angora, so I had to wait for my bunnies to grow the fiber as I went along. Having all 3 going, I kept the momentum yet had something different. That way, I didn't get bored with any.

I have discovered pin loom lately and think they are so so much fun. Your bandana is really cute with its embelishment.

I mostly like to finish a project before starting the next with exceptions like getting a fleece with lots of vm that I want to process outside before winter, or getting inspired to make something for a grandchild before they get too big!

I started with a drop spindle because I was not sure how I would feel about spinning. Once I was sure I loved the magic of turning fluff into yarn I saved up for my first wheel. Because I was new I bought my first wheel new. But after I learned a bit about wheels and kept an eye on sales papers and web sites where I got my next two wheels very cheaply. But I did have to look at a lot of wheels before I found them.

6:32 Yes! Enthusiasm can carry one a long way. I myself started with bearded collie "wool" since I really wanted yarn from my beautiful sheepdog to be made into something. Now I'm intrested to try spinning sheep wool but without my enthusiasm to get yarn from my dog I wouldn't most likely even had the inspiration to try spinning 😂

I like to finish a big project before I allow myself to cast on for the next one. I also have one sock project going at most times. So far this year I’ve knit five full length sweaters and five tee shirts so this strategy lets me feel productive. I don’t have unlimited bobbins - so I only have one or two spinning projects going either - for TdF I finished what I hope will be a sweater spin - but it may end up a vest - or pillows. Who knows? lol
