Hi friends! Shane here! I just wanted to quick put up some reflections on my day today. I got my 7th Spinraza injection and it was quite a long day! I’m so thankful for Hannah and Liz, for keeping me in good spirits during these challenging days. Thank you!
Hannah and I absolutely love making videos for you. If you would like to support our work so that we can continue sharing our life and relationship with you for years to come, you can do so on our Patreon: / squirmyandgrubs

Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah is a senior at Carleton College, studying sociology and anthropology. She works as a researcher for an educational consulting firm. Her future aspirations include attending law school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for over 2.5 years and living together in Minneapolis in recent months. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Hello Shane! My little niece at the age of 2 have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 3 (that was 2 years ago), and we passed a really hard time with the diagnosis, being honest. We live in Argentina (sorry for my english) so it's pretty difficult to get the Spinraza injections (and of course soooooo expensive), and it became even more harder because of all the legal process we have to pass for getting the government pay for the treatment. I'm glad I found your channel. As you should already know, in the beginning no one teaches you that, that a disability it's going to be something to struggle, but it's not going to be the label of your life or something that will define you. I don't know if you can understand what I'm trying to say, sorry for my poor english. You make me realised that she is going to be able to have a beautiful and fulfilling life, just like you, if she wants and work for it (with all of the family supporting every step of the way, of course). Thank you for giving me hope! Really really thank you. I send you my best wishes, and I will be here for every episode of your life and your amazing and sweet girlfriend.
@rima1815

If she is type 3, you have time, just make physical exercice and wait, the spinrasa price will drop and the FDA just approuvés 2 news treatments 10x less expensive. I don’t want to give hope, but the children that will born with type 3, are going to be « saved », you just need to practice sport and swimming to maintain the global muscular system and try to avoid gaining weight. With this, she will live a « normal » life to 30-40 years old with any help or assistance....all thing will depend on the parents motivation to help the child. Good luck.

@@rima1815 Hello! My original comment was 2 years ago and right now my niece is 6 years old, walking by herself, going to school and in control with spinraza treatment (our goverment/health inssurance is paying for it after a long legal battle), she is exercising and with physical theraphy non stop she is growing up great and learning how to live with SMA, the future is looking hopefull... thank you so much for your kind comment, i really appreciate it! my best wishes for you too!

@@DominguezCami hi, I saw that your comment was long time ago, but still write an answer , in case of. I know sma very well, biogen (company who make spinraza) very well too...the only advice I can give, that can change everything : - swimming, walking - not gaining weight (at 18, children most not exceed 63-65kg for around 1m70). - muscles will slowly lose their strength around 28-30, that mean, if she is too heavy, she will use them to often and destroy them - you need to put a routine, like eating. She eat 2 times a day ? She need small exercice 2 times a day. Good luck and don’t worry. With time, in 15-20 years, maybe, this disease will be totally cured. It’s not God, it’s science and money... From Switzerland...

Make note as to the location of that vein they drew blood from. Point it out each time you have blood taken. I am a retired ER RN and had a patient whom I took care of often. He was a hard stick and his arms were covered with tattoos. He had one vein that I was able to draw blood and I made a mental note as to where the vein was on his tattoo. Made it a whole lot easier getting blood from him.

Hi Shane. You know,as I listen to you tell the details of your injection day,I am fearful also as Hannah is. To have to sit by while the love of your life is going thru a very scary necessary procedure is beyond torture. Your strength is admirable. To have no control of the situation. Your faith in your higher power is great. I send my prayers to you and your families.

Hey Shane. I just finished your book laughing at my nightmare. I really enjoyed your take on life and the perceptions people have by judging a book by its cover. Our youngest son is 34 and when he was 8 months old he had a seizure that lasted over an hour. He continued having seizures along with tourette syndrome until age 19 when he had brain surgery that removed alot of his left temporal lobe and the left hippocampus. It was a great success. No more seizures and no more tourette's. He now lives on his own and drives. But what happens to him is the complete opposite of what you experience. He is a big healthy muscular guy who is challenged. He is very high functioning but people who do not know him expect more from him than he is capable of giving.. as a parent it's heart breaking to watch. Keep up the good work Shane! Your an inspiration to us all!

I LOVE it when a Dr gets it so quick!! It’s traumatic when they take ages to get where they are needing to be going!! I don’t have to have the injections you are having-but I do have lots of “procedures”-which I think, gets more & more difficult over time-probably because they have done it so many times (with experiences being good, bad, terrible & everything in between). They think I should be a “pro” by now-& I do try my best to make sure they don’t see my anxiety-but there has been so much that has been painful, difficult & traumatic-so many times it “hasn’t gone to plan” & that it’s been “difficult”-more so than when it has “gone to plan” & been “easy”...It’s hard to forget past experiences, especially when it hasn’t been pleasant...so it usually does play on my mind, & makes me feel anxious-It’s hard not to worry about a bad experience happening yet again, when it’s happened so many other times. You’re SO AWESOMELY AMAZING SHANE, you give me so much strength when I’m having trouble mustering my own! Ur an absolute CHAMP!!! Thankyou SO much!!!

Spinraza has proven to be life changing/extending. It is also one of the most expensive medications in the world. The better hydrated you are helps the techs stick you. Also asking for a pediatric specialist could help too, they stick newborns. Also schedule your appointment with an interventional radiologist, they specialize in your type of procedure. The more you know the better the procedure experience is for you.

Hi Shane, this is so crazy that you popped up on my trending page. My grandma just sent me an article about Spinraza. My family suffers from a genetic neurodegenerative disease called spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, or Machado Joseph’s disease, which is somewhat similar to SMA. My grandmother, my mom and her two brother had it, and unfortunately we lost my mom when I was 13 and my uncle about a year ago from pneumonia. My twin brother and I both have a 50% chance of having it. We are both now 26 and neither of us have been genetically tested for it. I’m so scared of having it, but people like you give me hope that we can lead normal lives, and that there are medicines coming out that can help us if we do. Thank you for being so brave and sharing your story.

Hi Shane and Hannah 👋...I just subscribed...you are amazing, Shane...maybe always request that doctor to do your injections and request that lady to do your blood every time...it's not unheard of to request certain people...Hannah you are beautiful and you and Shane make a beautiful couple...can't wait to binge the videos and I'll leave a "like" on them as I go...

So glad this medicine helps you. In my country this medicine has caused great controversy ,because of the price of it the government has refused to buy it for several years . This last year a few children under the age of 28 has now had the chance to get it. It’s quite pathetic for the richest country in the world to refuse their inhabitant with condition to get treatment to work . I really hope this will change and will be available to all soon.

my veins are difficult too. Mine roll as well and they can only use one of my arms because the other one is reserved for a machine that keeps me alive (dialysis) so I feel for you Shane.
