Spirit of the Outback - Driver's Eye View - Alpha to Emerald Part 1

Once again I’ll have to come clean and admit this is a fake Driver’s Eye View created by reversing the footage taken from the back of the train, probably the best position for the camera as it was raining for much of the journey. For the first half hour of this video the scenery is typical of the Queensland outback, reasonably flat, with Eucalyptus and Gum trees dotted all over the reddish rock and sand landscape as far as the eye can see. The railway and Capricorn Highway follow a similar path all the way from Longreach to Rockhampton often running within sight of each other. In the second half of this video the railway starts to climb into the Drummond Ranges following the contours of the land to gain height without the need for major engineering structures. This is the most scenic and interesting section of the route.
Filmed 31.01.2019 - Train operated by QueenslandRail - Track gauge 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in).

What fascinates me is how sudden those hills are. It's flat flat flat until about 58 minutes and then BAM! Eroded mountain country. Like an arid Appalachia.

Hi, like yourself, I was surprised at how quickly the scenery changed from flat to rolling hills, the outback is fascinating, far more productive than I was expecting.

Thanks I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Since reading about Australia as a youngster I'd been curious to know more about the outback, this journey gave me a glimpse of the vast interior, now my curiosity has been stirred, I'd like to see more.

That's why some part of the video was edited out so that the reverse road trains wouldn't be spotted. A lovely ride through Australia. This must be Queens land where the video was shot in. Looking forward to the next part.

Road trains travelling at high-speed in reverse are a bit of a give away, fortunately there were not too many of them. This video was taken in Central Queensland, the second video in the series will be ready at the weekend. Cheers. Tim.

Questions: What is the black soil on some parts of the track? Is the train freight or passenger? What is the length of the train? Who owns the land we travel through? Would love extra information next time as to where we are, etc!

Why is there all the gaps - the bits taken out of the clip? Great idea about the reverse imagery. OH! Just answered my own question... Everything that moves would be going BACKWARDS. LOL
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 2 месяца назад
Hi, Queensland Rail wouldn't allow me to place a camera on the locomotive, so I did the next best thing and placed one at the rear of the train and reversed the footage. The missing bits are the give aways i.e. people walking backwards and car reversing at high speed along the nearby roads.

good example of entropy, can't tell it's played backwards in time based on just 2 observations, the train and track.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 Год назад
Entropy is a new word to me, so I lookied it up - Entropy, loosely, is a measure of quality of energy in the sense that the lower the entropy the higher the quality. Energy stored in a carefully ordered way (the efficient library) has lower entropy. Energy stored in a chaotic way (the random-pile library) has high entropy. Cheers, I've learned something new today. I was able to get away with reversing the video because there is very little to give the game away.
@sicilianeye

That's clever. I never would have noticed the reverse footage without you mentioning it. Still works. Btw, I like watching this kind of stuff when I can't sleep at night. It works well. Thank you for posting it. i

I can't always get permission to film from the cab, filming from the back and reversing the result works well as long as there no roads or people nearby, it is a bit of a give away when they are all reversing. My wife tells me my videos send her to sleep. I'm hope you enjoyed it.

I did everything I could to persuade Queensland Rail to allow me to place a camera in cab, sadly they put so many obstacles in the way, it was clear I was never going to get permission. That is not a reflection on the train staff, they were terrific.

@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 4 года назад
Hi, I was using GoPro 6 and 7 Black Edition cameras on this trip with large memory cards and external batteries, similar to those used to top up mobile phones when no mains is available. There are a couple of important things to do to get successful results - remove the cameras internal battery and always use a freshly formatted memory card. I hope this helps, any questions, just ask, if I know the answer I'll pass it on. Take care. Tim.

I use Samsung 256GB Evo Plus Micro SD Cards - mymemory.com offer a good price and I've been pleased with their service. I get more than 6 hrs from this combination at 1080P and around 4 hours at 4K but the cameras get very hot and sometimes trip out when using 4K

@@Timsvideochannel1 Interesting. I thought I had asked a silly question but I now gather one can tell if the sound is played backward. Much of the twisting and rattling of the trains as well as the "wheel whistle" when the train is taking a bend I might have thought would sound the same in both directions. Thanks for letting me know.
