I am working very hard on doing the tasks that are most important first and then doing the fun craftsy stuff after!! This shift has made me feel less stressed in this crazy school year!!

+Elementary In The Mitten Kim , Thanks for showing us how you teach letter sounds , etc . Also , when your students are into what you are doing then that tells you that you are doing the right thing or at least something right . Keep right on doing it . Keep handling it like a champ . - Dwight

Love the way that you use tactile phonics practice with your kiddos! My teammate and I starting using LCD electronic doodle boards (from Amazon- you can get 4 for about $20) and they are a game changer! Kiddos are so engaged and excited to use these for small group math and reading activities.

Epic has a TON of National Geographic kids books available. Some read to you but I think a majority of them are read to self. I finally got my son into a “1000 books before kindergarten” program at our local library. He’s been super into the National Geographic Kids books, Elephant and Piggy, and the Pigeon book! He laughs constantly when we’re reading a Mo Willems book ❤️😂

Love the ears! I change mine up for the holidays. Bunny ears are ready & waiting! Have you considered switching out your hand signs (1-2-3) and just teaching your students American Sign Language (ASL) instead? I use ASL for classroom management and other things throughout the day. My 4th grade students know over 50 words and are now able to speak in complete sentences. We respond using ASL in Morning Meeting or anytime students are sharing. It’s great for hallway and assemblies, too.

I like the way you teach words, am sure the kids learn really quickly. Spirit week sounds lots of fun. Good that you are taking time in the morning to look after you. My self care has come to the fore in the last couple of weeks. Am taking more time to sleep and read.

Simon B. Rhymin is written by a fellow educator in Chicago. I came across him about 4 years ago with his RU-vid song. Love watching your vlogs, 💗

Hey, look up the 'American Girl I can be the best that I can be' song. It really goes with the theme, and is cute for children! :)

In Spanish each letter has one sound, with the exception of the soft and hard “c.” And “h” is always silent in Spanish. I think that might help explain it a little better. And that’s why, back to your earlier comment, learning Spanish is way easier than learning English. I have 4 first year immigrants this year…in 5th grade…I feel like I am doing them such a disservice. And I’m bilingual!!! There are so many skills to teach that making time to teach English reading skills is near impossible. 🤪🤪🤪

Wouldn’t it be easier if you divide up the multisyllabic word by syllables first? If kids get confused they can learn the syllable rules. Learning spelling of multisyllabic words is way easier with syllables, I feel.

Yes, we do that too! I teach my students many different methods so they’re able to have a “toolbox” of different strategies to use when they’re reading. That’s why at the beginning of the clip I said that normally I would ask my student to break it into “known parts” first and if they’re unable to, that’s when we might try this strategy!

Have you had any problems getting books from Scholastic? I know I have been reading that a lot of teachers have had to wait for many months to get their books from Scholastic. I have been afraid to order from them until they got things straightened out.

What are heart words?
@ElementaryInTheMitten
@ElementaryInTheMitten 2 года назад
Hey Stephanie! Sorry, I should have clarified. Heart words are words with irregular spelling patterns that you have to memorize or put into your “heart.” Part of the word can be decoded in the typical way, but at least one or more parts of the word will need to be explicitly taught because it is irregular.
