The one take vocal performance of this is better imo. It’s more energetic, clearer vocals and get up close the see Courtney do her thang!

Its ten times better however there are two versions of the one takes of The beauty of suffering, probably my favorite song. An older version and newer version, the older version is deeper, but the newer version has better harse vocals. old version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pR9YdkesspQ.html The Beauty Of Suffering - Spiritbox (Courtney LaPlante Live Performance) new version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tA0-WXsm-T0.html Spiritbox - SiriusXM Liquid Metal "Metal Detector" Live Show (Pt.3)

courtney is unique in the fact that she does what they call melodic screaming. she in combining her singing voice with the harsh vocals to flow with the melody and hold a pitch. almost as if she’s doing her own layer work herself.

You guys remind me of hanging out with my friends in high school. Just chillin' and forgetting about life's worries. I'm going to reconnect with my friends again. Thank you for reminding me what's really important. I miss those times. Jaded is going to blow his mind. The absolutely most interesting part about her is that she screams on pitch. Blew my mind the first time I heard it and went back to listen to their music.

I don't think you can accidentally slip into harsh vocals. Falcetto and other types of cleans all still utilize the true vocal folds, just add different mechanisms and effects to it. But harsh vocals, not always, but often happen above them on false vocal folds and similar, so it's activation of completely different muscles and tissues.

Possibly Future Islands singer Tim accidentally slips into gutteral sounds when his voice is tired due to an edema on his chords 🤘

A great example of someone that effortlessly slides between harsh and clean vocals, with every gradient in between, is Devin Townsend's Kingdom. The man is an absolute legend and there's a version where he sings and plays guitar live to a backing track that's had loads of reactions by vocal coaches. It's a real eye opener for the uninitiated.

This technique goes far back. Metallica, Scorpions, Guns & Roses started it. Linkin Park, Korn, System of a Down developed it. Architects and Parkway Drive do have an interesting taste. I really love Spiritbox because unlike other bands Courtney can use clean, crunchy and heavy vocals throughout a song. The contrast and the blending into is what makes her special in my eyes.

After the song, when he asks if anyone does both screaming and singing the first band that comes to mind is Architects. Sam is a master of this and usually stays in this range actually. He can strangely scream in notes like he’s singing. Check out “doomsday” by Architects. It’s a popular song by them and displays this. Keep up the fun content!

Angela Gossow (previously Arch Enemy member) is one of the most technically gifted at what metalheads tend to just refer to as grunting/screaming (so harsh vocals). She teaches it and a bootleg of a clinic of hers is easy to find. It's about your false vocal chords. (A notable thing present also in classical singing, bc there's a difference between singing low with your vocal chords, and low with your false ones). In that sense I do think it is a switch (and Angela says she does go into a 'physical vocal mode' live where she sounds lower than normal), just like high pitched/head voice. Good question on his part!

Highly suggest watching reactions from @thecharismaticvoice to learn about harsh vocals. She's an opera singer but has become an expert in explaining/breaking down harsh vocal techniques. She even has a video where they send a camera down the throat of Will Ramos from Lorna Shore to see how he makes the sounds he does. It was pretty groundbreaking for the metal scene, no one had ever done research like that before. It's cool to see the doctors/nurses nerding out over something totally new.

There are different techniques to screaming/harsh vocals. Vocal Fry uses the vocal chords while False Chord vocals use the flaps/area above the vocal chords and back of the throat/mouth. Then there are other techniques, such as Tunnel Throat vocals that utilize the shape of the tongue and position of it along with mostly False Chord vocals. Also, all types of harsh vocals require certain positions of the tongue, jaw, and shape of the mouth to register different sounds. In this song, Courtney uses mostly Vocal Fry, and then for the lows she uses False Chords. I've never heard Courtney use the Tunnel Throat technique, but a lot of heavier bands like Slaughter to Prevail use it all. I would definitely like to see more Spiritbox from you guys. Fair warning, they do have a lot of heavier songs. But I do love Courtney's vocals over Jinjer's due to the versatility and just overall theme that they have with their music. A lot of what they do has to do with breaking barriers and experimentation. I'm sure you'll enjoy hearing more!
