Yea that shit is amazing. I don't know who does it better her or the original IWABO singer Krysta Cameron. If I had to choose though, I'd say Krysta Cameron.
She is giving me chills, the switch from screaming to singing. When I first heard of Spiritbox, I thought it was a gut doing the screaming part, but its this amazing woman. Like wow, wtf
Look up older Iwrestledabearonce... Courtney was the best vocalist they ever had but their shit is brutal vocal wise and also instrumental compared to Spiritbox
Changes to the airway to create the right resonance for a good scream will absolutely do that. I know my chest positioning changes when I do it, and getting the "roundness" of the scream involves changing the mouth structure, too. It's good shit, she does it well.
It's easy to miss a lot of what's happening in this song with the glory of Courtney LaPlante in the forefront, but this song is a technical masterpiece instrumentally as well.
@@user-ch9vd4cd3t The bass or the glass? Because that breaking glass SFX that they layer over the big drops is incredible. Edit: Oh my bad. The breaking glass is in "Holy Roller".
I remember a friend of mines band who toured with her way back when she was in Unicron, from BC canada. About 4 weeks ago I heard a track from the acacia strain with a females voice who I coulda sworn was the same the one from iwrestledabearonce. Had to look up what Courtney was up to these days and thats how I discovered spiritbox. I always knew she was gonna be big. Spiritbox is unbelievable but I wish there was one more album of iwabo with her.
The vocal range here in incredible....to be able to scream like that and hit those beautiful cleans gives me chills everytime. So much talent. Such a great band.
And through a RU-vid wormhole I have stumbled upon Spiritbox. This being the first time I've listened to the band I must say this song is an absolute banger
There is no way she just did the most badass thing I’ve ever seen had the voice of an angel and the god damn devil all at the same time and then at the end she looks at the camera and say “I did it” like it was nothing
Indeed, Courtney has an amazing vocals. But Spiritbox is not a metalcore band, is more a progressive/alternative Heavy Metal band. In fact, metalcore is not Heavy Metal at all; metalcore has his roots in Punk music (Hardcore Punk to be more specific). Sorry for my bad English, it isn't my mother tongue.
@@destinycl4ws Not trying to argue. But according to Wikipedia it is a sub genere of heavy metal they came up with it when they combined hardcore punk with heavy metal. Btw, your English is good. It also says combines "extreme metal and hardcore punk"
I get goosebumps every time I hear her scream. The control that she has within her screams is beyond impressive. The little nuances she flows in and out of is so tasteful and elegant. I could listen to her vocals all day long. She is really a unicorn. Once in a generation talent. 💯
Mind blown 🤯. Her voice is both beautiful and powerful. Her control and timing is ridiculous. What she adds with her breathing replacing singing notes and delays is so cool and interesting. I’ve just started watching her videos but this is my favorite song she has sung so far. Awesome wow
@@adriansoul7223 while you're right that courtney's expressions here are from mouth position not emotion, it is absolutely not true that it would be wrong to add emotion into a harsh vocal. the vagus nerve directly affects the vocal cords, and it's entirely possible and sometimes very appropriate for a singer to emote so that they can alter their sound. that touch of emotion can be heard even through the distortion of a harsh vocal and can be very effective. definitely nothing wrong with doing it. it's just not happening here.
I cant help but see parallels to the mcu scarlet witch's story in these lyrics. Actually kinda spells out some events in wandavision pretty closely. Courtney is da metal goat far as im concerned hands down.
I remember her saying she doesn't have any vocal training, but she sounds like she's completely mastered her craft. Her cleans are so beautifully nuanced and her screaming sounds so effortlessly clean. She's not hurting her voice and it blows my mind.
Dude yes, she’s a freaking natural it’s impressive. Especially because she’s a woman. I do feel like she can improve on her singing but most singers start off that way in the beginning of their careers. Her voice will get stronger and she’ll become more consistent.
@@nh4820 she’s not at the beginning of her career, just finally getting the recognition she deserves as well as her bandmates. Im stoked for their success 🤘🏼
I came across you guys while looking for some new music to my playlist and I'm sold, you guys ROCK! I've been playing your songs on repeat for days now and can't get enough. Ow and your live sessions, are even better than studio versions. What a great band!!
Discovered Spiritbox at Knotfest Sydney earlier this year. Since then they have become one of my favourite bands. Cannot stop listening to them, and these Live one takes are absolutely amazing my god. I still get goose bumps listening to them.
Hahhahahah Had no clue what you meant by "She deed it." Until the end of video... Then I laughed so hard my injured leg hurt. But I still laughed more.
Its fascinating to see how good screamers really use all of their facial muscles in concert with their vocal cords. It definitely has an effect on shaping the sound of the scream.
So... just heard about this band and let me just say. Wow! It's been a long time since a band has captivated me from the first listen. Best way for me to describe them: Everything all at once!
Same. Not that I was the biggest I Wrestled a Bear Once fan but I happened to look up what happened to the members when I found out they weren't a thing anymore. Damn glad I did. New favorite band!
Completely masterful vocals. I love the soft breathy parts, smashed by the super dynamics of the screams, and then back. I'm a fan Courtney. Nicely Done!
The thing she does that seems less common to me and is really cool is she is slipping in and out of distortion, and layering clean sounds on top of her screams at the same time, not in multiple takes. The way she flips from clean to distorted and stacks her sounds is really impressive.
He body control is really cool to watch too, how she leans into the mike, deep breaths and mouth shapes so she's not forcing the sound out, she has technique.
She also does it in the middle individual lines, almost every time she screams. Ex (caps = screams): *IN TIME* I learned the *RULES* of a *SADIST* . As someone who's working on aggressive vocals, it's really hard to do because it is essentially stopping the flow of a scream, dropping down, then popping back into a scream again. It's like derailing yourself deliberately.
Fifty one years old and just discovered Spiritbox. My new favorite band. And she is incredible. First time I heard her the hair literally stood up on my arms.
This is inspirational stuff. Not only a bloody great tune from the band, but showing that looking after your voice and having a great technique means you can sustain and transition from cleans to growls. Courtney, you're bloody awesome.
Maybe you'd like eths, they are a french metalcore band, imo highly underrated, maybe not technically as clean as jinjer or spiritbox, but pretty brutal, Candice was the original singer, tho the last album they did with another. but def would recoomend harmaguedon, bulimiarexia and crucifere from them. Again while they may not be as good live as jinjer or spiritbox, to me all those years back when i stumbled upon eths i have been glad that i had.
Cool ! Then stick around ! There is already a lot more to listen to : She started as the 2nd singer of iwrestledabearonce. She reccorded albums #3 and #4). Check out "Boat Paddle". That song is a good exemple. But they were goofy as f*** when it came to videos so..... try to listen to it WITHOUT the video :). It's definetly worth listening to. What comes here is my understanding of the following events (don't hold me to it !) : Her and the guitarist were actually a couple and they wanted "more". They wanted to progress/explore/evolve. Much more than the rest of the band. So they left and made Spiritbox. Spirit has a full album already and a few more singles. (including a "singles collection" album in ITune) Check it out. They diserve it. They diserver/need your support ! If you need more proofs though, listen to the album version of "The Mara Effect" Parts 1-2-3 (There is also a live studio version... her voice is awesome, but the band's not as good as on the album version... according to my own taste at least). There's also plenty of videos. I really like "Perenial". But that's just one of many.

Review from my 6 year old son: "She's very pretty with a very pretty voice." When she started screaming his eyes got super wide and he broke out in the BIGGEST smile. "WhOa!! How does she do that!? She's awesome!!"
@evilrock3 its a child, you cant expect them to always make 900 iq statements just so your huge brain can understand. Point in case, youre ruining the comment, please stop replying
My favorite song from Spiritbox. Such a bad ass combination of soft and heavy vocals, tight ass djent guitar, and driving bass! And to not mention the depth of the lyrics would be a universal sin. This song's been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it like 2 months ago. GOOD GAWD
