This session will explore themes from Philip Yancey’s new book, Where the Light Fell, which recounts his journey away from fundamentalism and toward a life-affirming, hospitable Christian faith. Both speakers will address the spiritual concept of grace, as well as the relationship between faith and wonder. When Christianity-including politically defined Christianity that journalists often encounter in Washington and on the campaign trail-is reduced to an identity label, or hollowed out from its theological content, what spiritually-formative practices might revive deeper understanding of and commitment to orthodox faith? And for journalists covering American religion, what do we sometimes miss-especially with respect to authentic expressions of spiritual formation?

Few men have impacted my life both personally and professionally as Philip has. As a former wanna-be journalist, I know his journey of fundamentalism and now his role as a "survivor" of brain injury as one of his brother's primary supports and caregivers/partners. Vulnerability and transparency are Philip's trademark, and his battle of reconstructing his faith gives me hope in a world bend on destroying my own. Thank you!
