Things that help a Melancholic: Joyous attitude Fortitude (because he doesn’t want to do the things that will cause him suffering) Charity (drag him out of himself- love of God & love of neighbor FOR the sake of God) Encouraged to be busy with beneficial activities such as work & hobbies in order to keep his mind off of his sorrow) Hope (overcome depression)

Listening to this has confirmed what many online personality tests already told me. I'm more or less equal parts sanguine, melancholic, and phlegmatic. When I listened to the descriptions, I could not relate to the choleric at all, but for all the other temperaments, half the traits were "that's so me" and the other half were "I don't do that". From what I've observed, my immediate environment and the weather seem to have a lot of influence on which temperament dominates.

All personalities have strengths and weaknesses. The key is to develop your strengths while minimizing weaknesses. Demons complicate things by exploiting our weaknesses. It’s like having a sparring partner. When God puts us in the ring with demons, He intends the pummeling He lets them give us to elevate us in holiness. Our love for God, abandonment to His Will, and the degree to which this drives us to accept (even embrace) whatever suffering He sends is a major determinant of the level of holiness we eventually attain, usually in subtle but very profound ways. One of the biggest reasons people get stuck at a lower level is an unwillingness to suffer. This is especially true in modern societies where a life of comfort and ease is the predominant ideal. Broken people are far more likely to seek God than people with a comfortable lifestyle. Accepting being broken, however, is only the beginning. There is an entire journey involved in moving through brokenness to wholeness and joy in Christ. These are insights I’ve gleaned from hours and hours spent listening to Fr. Ripperger.

The phlegmatic temperament is hard to achieve sainthood because it is hard for them to find strong passions for anything even food. It is also really hard to get them to study for school if they don't care about doing well. I should know, I couldn't be bothered to do anything besides the bare minimum in school or work. One of my teachers even said something along the lines of "not motivated/doesn't try", but neither of my parents really paid attention to the note by the letter grade.

Pray the litany of humility. It really helps. It’s very hard at first. We only feel sorrow for what once brought us joy. Sorrow is in a sense compassion, for both self and others but humility helps us to accept it all. Humility exists at the base of all virtues and charity directs all the virtues. We only feel sorrow for what once brought us joy or what we thought might occur to. I hope this helps and God Bless

Zach, I'm a cradle Catholic and heavy melancholic like yourself. It contributed a significant part in my 16 year atheistic stint. I finally experienced the presence of Jesus multiple times 2 months ago when I fell ill and couldn't eat or drink for 3 weeks. I was in severe stomach and intestinal pain all the time, no sleep for more than an hour. To try and find peace, I turned to RU-vid to find Church hymns and found a 4 hour video of the rosary sung by the Gregorians. That allowed me the first proper sleep in at least a week and a half. The next day during the next pain episode, I felt the urge to get down on my knees and pray the 'Consecration of One’s Exterior Goods to the Blessed Virgin Mary' that I heard Fr. Rippberger once mention in a lecture. I figured, if I give up my health to the Her and the Lord, I'd have nothing to lose. But I did it with sincerity because by now faith was beginning to spring up in my heart. I felt the urge after to say the Credo, and I was an amazing rush of power, the pain was subsiding. I had another pain severe pain episode a week later and this time as I had just watched Fr. Dalton's interview on Pints With Aquinas on the Shroud of Turin, and was able to clearly visualise Christ on the cross and prayed out loud for God not to abandon me, and the pain subsided. I'm almost 100% better now, and I no longer feel depressed at all, not even slightly, I have a totally different outlook on life, zero pron, praying the rosary everyday and learning it in Latin. I too thought I'd never experience God, but in my 16 atheistic years, I never stopped searching for the Truth. A week or two before my sickness, I managed to convince myself that logically God must exist after a long long period of study and I prayed somewhat faithlessly to God, to reveal himself to me, because I so desperately wanted to Believe. I'm blessed that God decided I was ready for it and of course He was not wrong! I wish I could speak with you because there's so many details I've had to leave out as typing is such a pain. If you happen to see this, feel free to ask questions and I'll help.

They are the best of friends and balance each other out perfectly. The old adage, opposites attract, is very true in our family. Edit: ... to build a little further on my point. My husband has all the qualities that I hope to acheieve and visa versa. The nice thing about opposites, is one persons strength can be shared with another. The goal is to be equal in all parts. I found this talk fascinating, especially the part about temperaments having a physical component and that you can change your DNA through the way you behave. I have a very nerdy question. Suppose a husband and wife married young and immediately started having children. Throughout marriage and family life, this couple grew spiritually and diligently worked on eliminating vice and developing virtue. Suppose also that they continued to have children for as long as they could so she was having babies in her forties. In a case like this, could it be possible that the children birthed at the beginning would genetically inherit something closer to the *original* temperaments of the parent, whereas the children birthed much later would genetically inherit something closer to the more virtuous, acquired temperament of both parents?

I don't know if I should bring this up but these 4 temperaments remind me very much of the 4 elements in astrology: the sanguine being like air signs; the choleric being fire signs; the melancholic being water signs; and the flegmatic being lke earth signs... Astrology nowhere suggests that these dispositions can in any way be transformed: it just assumes that they're there forever and more or less determine your fate. Having said this, I'm not so sure one becomes a saint by 'working' on one's vices but rather by getting out of the way and allowing the Holy Spirit to do the job.
@alisterrebelo9013
@alisterrebelo9013 Год назад
Through Christ, I tell you are in the clutches of demons and evil. Not only have you spent a serious amount of time studying Astrology, re-read very slowly your last sentence about vices. You are telling Christians to be passive about their vices. Are you serious? Galatians 5, 16-26 is very clear that self control is needed to restrain vices which requires active work on our part. I'll pray for you as it is clear that your soul and understanding of Christ has been corrupted.
@superapex2128
@superapex2128 Год назад
@@alisterrebelo9013 The only 'active work' required of us is giving our consent to the work of the Holy Spirit: 'For it is God who works within you to will and to act.' (Philippians 2:13) I know all about good works but I'm not a Pelagian so I don't believe I am the one doing the work. Nor am I a Semi-pelagian, so I don't believe it is I, with the help of God. I am a Catholic, so I know that God is the primary agent of my sanctification and I am only secondary: my only job is to allow the God I receive in the Sacraments to act in me and through me - 'It is not I who live, but Christ in me.' (Galatians 2:20)

@@superapex2128 I'm not surprised you didn't respond to my claim of your dabbling in Astrology. Don't call yourself a Christian let alone Catholic, as you bring shame to the Lord our God. You know a few big words and think you know a lot. What about what I said sounds like Pelagianism? Pathethic attempt at a strawman, don't mislead the rest of us Catholics on your warped view of how to overcome sin. You seem to be one of those Catholics in name only who has no real intent to permanently rid oneself of sin and merely want use the sacraments instrumentally to cleanse yourself on a periodic basis. Have you managed to permanently stop any form of sin? I have, and I tell you it takes actual work on the part of the person to watch in my example, their words and language. The Holy Spirit inspires and acts through us but only if we are willing to actively participate in the effort. When Jesus exhorts us to pick up the cross and follow him, is this a passive act? I'll be offering tonight's rosary for your redemption.

@@lucystephanieproperties After receiving the Holy Ghost, we are not supposed to work at all... The Holy Ghost does not work 'with' us: He works THROUGH us - if we allow Him to. An interesting question that just occurred to me: What temperaments were the Holy Family? Specifically Jesus and Mary. Although I love St. Joseph and would be curious about his as well. Did they have a specific predominant temperament, or is the predominance of a specific temperament technically a flaw and a result of original sin, implying that they instead had an equal proportion and perfection of the strengths of each? Another way perhaps of rephrasing the question: As one approaches perfection, does one's distinctive temperament "evaporate" and become undistinguishable, or does it become even more pronounced?

Read some of the speeches of well-known politicians like Winston Churchill or Abraham Lincoln. I would consider reading the New York Times as well because the temperament doesn’t react to things as much as the other ones. Food is a big concept for a phlegmatic though. I could fill up on a lot of things in a day, but if I don’t enrich my mind with the work of God’s plan, I feel bad. That might be the secondary temperament talking though, I can’t decide if it is choleric or melancholic though. The Internet is a virtual smorgasbord of food for thought, and we have to be very careful.

Melancholics often are very well kept (hair, etc), sanguines often wear more color or are more trendy, phlegmatics might dress more comfy- etc. But of course your secondary temperament effects the choices you make as well. I think categories are not that helpful. My takeaway is this: I have much to be thankful for because the temperament I was born with was definitely altered by my parents, grandparents, and life, itself. We are constantly growing and changing by God’s Grace and our response. I learned nothing new, here, partly because I know myself quite well and how life’s struggles and family support guided me all my life. Of course, my faith has been shaped by God and family not by a study into personalities. Just my opinion.

To each his own. These categories are a tool.and helpful for some to advance in virtue. If it doesn't help you or not useful for you, good also you found your way into increasing your holiness. These temperaments as categories are graces... Good you learned nothing new here... Because it's proper that you don't. If it's not for you doesn't mean it's not useful for others... And your takeaway doesn't make sense. If it's not helpful for you then why bother leaving a comment? It just means you're not the intended recipient of this knowledge.

Regarding Father's comment that feeding a child a magnitude of sugars and flour will rapidly induce ADD (now denominated 'ADHD'), I opine that this is not well thought out. ADHD is with reason speculated or known to be genetic. It is probably rather that the environmental circumstance of consuming a magnitude of sugar and flour is an effect, not cause, of ADHD, because those with the disorder crave the neurological stimulation that is absent from their systems by a defect of nature; i. e. their bodies do not produce the natural level of stimulation and therefore crave a substitute, which at least sugar is, albeit a poor one. If you have a child who CONSTANTLY and INVARIABLY craves sugary foods and exhibits inattention, hyperactivity, or both, have him tested for ADHD. The hyperactivity is either in the mind, evidenced by constantly attending to diverse, 'off topic' thoughts; the body, evidenced by figeting, constant hyperactivity, or bursts of hyperactivity; or both hyperactivity mentally and bodily. The body is reacting this way in ADHD patients because it is trying to self-correct deficient neurological stimulation, which it can not. That is why stimulants are prescribed for ADHD patients. I also opine that ADHD and other psychological disorders mask or distort personal temperaments, e. g., for autistics, identification of their temperaments is extremely difficult, which results in difficulty fully relating to them.
@juice2307
@juice2307 2 года назад
Yep, ADHD is neurological and the worst thing about it is having the want and the will to do something, while being blocked from acting because your own body is against you. I have learned how to overcome that, but the strain and pain of warring with yourself in that way are great.

no problem. glad it could help. those are a few things I have picked up. I have watched the Lord work with a friend of mine who is the 4 and struggles with Envy as a chief defect. He sometimes helps her by taking away something like her health for an extended period of time... and then He gives it back. And she is sooo grateful. Because gratitude is the antidote for envy. I have seen him use this process for her a few times. personally, I am a peacemaker... but the struggle for the peacemaker is hearing their own heart and following it. which is precisely the place the Lord is trying to lead any of us from... once our heart points at Him rather than our addiction or whatever else we have placed as the desire of our heart. Once God is truly our heart's desire, then we can trust our heart and follow it... because the Lord will lead us from it. the heart represents our free will... and it is guided by our desires. When God is truly our heart's desire... our heart is the GPS. For a peacemaker... this is a long, arduous process to get to a place of freedom because while we remain dis-integrated within our two natures, we spend most of our time understanding everyone else's perspective and have a difficult time knowing what our own heart is saying to us. silence and getting away from others is important for us to find God. journaling is a great tool for helping us to work out our heart. we always want to keep the peace... we don't like conflict... and while we remain dis-integrated within ourselves, we often cave, even to the truth that God has put into our own heart... because we don't like conflict with others and are driven to keep the peace and tranquility we so greatly desire. so we may go along with others... and the devil uses this to try leading us away from Christ. because we want peace and are lazy about fighting for our own pov (if we even know it) this leads to self esteem issues for us. but through grace, God helps us learn to follow our own heart. And we grow in confidence and integration within by holding our ground and even fighting for the Truths that God has placed within us. And with humility, we may discover that it is more important for us to walk through conflict, in order to help others find peace... rather than selfishly seeking to maintain our own.

@Defman What you said about thankfulness being the antidote for envy is very intriguing. Like the way mercy is the opposite of judgement. Is there any other of these opposites you know of? No- it's not coming from an egotistical perspective - it may come from trauma, abuse, or dysfunction from your family of origin. It was never helpful to me to hear that my scrupulosity growing up was pride because it just drove me deeper into anxiety because I just couldn't get away from it- I wanted so bad for God to like me and to be a good person- I felt like no matter what I did I was always going to be bad. Turns out the way my family was run, I tried to fix and please everybody so that I would stop being yelled at, people would stop fighting, be ok, etc. That's how I thought God was without realizing it because that's all I had ever known. God loves you and wants you. He first loved us - no questions asked. You can't get away from his love. You are not bad- he made you good and wants you. You can enjoy him and yourself and the life he's made for you because he loves you. He wants you with him forever.

@@rosepistilli223Come as you are, and humbly ask thy Lord our God and Father to change us by His will and wisdom alone. That His voice be the only ones we hear, and that He teaches us His ways personally, show me how to think, speak, act and be in every moment of my life, always that this and become aware of His presence in us. Read His Scriptures, so you become acquainted with His will and His voice. It becomes so much easier to be guided by His voice when you know what His will is and His voice.. also, stay in prayer, always. Every time you feel or think to pray, just do it. Fast and pray, kneel when you pray, go into your prayer closet to pray alone with Him. This is important, and to discern His voice, pray out loud, pray the Psalms. Pray the things that are written in Scriptures until you've gained a grasp on what to pray by what the Holy Spirit wants you to pray. Fasting regularly (example, from 12p.m. to 4p.m. every Monday, Wed and Friday) and dedicate prayer the entire time, only drinking natural water, will correct the lower faculties (the flesh) and His voice becomes louder. This is a sacrifice, for God's sake. Every thought you think, let it be for Gods sake and with these desires, He will actually do this work in you and change your will to desire these things naturally. Go through the motions and you will become a new creation in Christ. God bless ❤

All of us are a mix of each of the four types and it gives you a chart listing the percentages of each group you have and an accompanying analysis of your strengths and weaknesses. I found mine very enlightening and it opened my eyes to the spiritual dangers to be watchful for. On a side note, I met my wife on Catholic Mingle. I was looking for a believing Catholic not just a cultural Catholic and CM also lists questions about Church teachings and asks which one you believe. Of course any teaching you don’t agree with means you don’t believe the Church to be infallible or authoritative.
