The first weekend I was finally able to land it successfully with some regularity left me with a real sense of accomplishment that I don’t think I felt with from any other aspect of any other DCS module.

Yeah, it felt real good when I finally nailed the landing the first time! I didn’t think it was as hard as it was, coming from the P-47 and P-51, and being able to land those two aircraft well.

I need to spend some more hours just practicing landing. There’s no worst feeling than coming back after an hour mission over the channel and break your spit on a bad landing lol

The Spit is the hardest one of the hardest to land, took me a bit of practice to be able to land it reliably. Keep at it, it'll feel good when you can grease it in!

With the Spitfire I really recommend you stay high and come in steep at idle, then just a touch of throttle if needed to bring it in soft. A slipped approach is best because you can see the runway and drop altitude easily then just straighten out before touchdown. It is not a jet, so don't fly it like one. Very informative video, thanks for posting.

Just started to fly the WarBirds incl the Spitfire Mk IX, and of course ... big problems with taking off and landings, and I know practice and adjusting settings is the only way to get your head around things and get the feeling of it. And It really doesn't make it easier when virtualy all videos have "different" take off "recommendations" So I decided today to go with yours, and man .... since today I have made a huge progress, especially because of the explenations why we have to do this and that. Thanks for taking time to produce this video giving all the ins and outs we need to know.

Big thank you for this video. Very thorough, very good overview of my favourite plane. And yes, landing needs concentration. Lots of concentration! It's a good challenge but I do wonder whether the real plane could have been as difficult or there would have been a lot more landing accidents?
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation Год назад
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! I’ve thought about that, and I’d like to think we have it worse in DCS. We have to rely purely on visuals where in the real thing you would feel the movements and be able to apply timely corrections.

I trialed this thing last year for 2 weeks and never even got it off the ground so I uninstalled it and stayed with my P-51. Just trialed this Spitty again and for some reason I have no problem taxiing and taking off now. Still can't land it yet, but this video will help me. This time I'm going to keep it.

Maybe I missed this but there was no pre-check on QNH. The ocean was very close but the altimeter showed an aerodrome elevation of already 1000 ft. The altimeter is also a very important instrument when you are going to land and particularly in bad weather. Otherwise a great video. I learned a lot about the Spitfire Mk IX. Thanks.

@@DieselThunderAviation Just down the road from me is ahere there used to be a Spit Training Airfield from WW2. Clostermann actually did some training there. Someone was telling me of the casualties involved in just accidents. Can't remember the exact figures but I DO remember it raised an eyebrow!
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation Год назад
Is that field on the new Normandy map in DCS? Especially with low time pilots, I can see that number being high. Similar story with the F4U Corsair, more of them were lost in training than in combat.
@TheRaptorXX
@TheRaptorXX Год назад
@@DieselThunderAviation Unfortunately not. The field is a wee bit further North. It's up in Shropshire, on the Welsh border. A place called Rednal. A WAAF, Leading Aircraft's Woman, Margaret Hay, who was posted there recalls, "Rednal seen a number of famous faces either go through the training system, or put on a refresher course for a 'rest' or arriving at Rednal as part of the Staff. In fact one of Rednal's Commanding Officers was, Don Finlay, who was C/O of 41 Squadron during the Battle of Britain and a pre-war Hurdles Champion and he could be seen every morning running around the perimeter track at Rednal. Perhaps the most celebrated pilot to be trained at Rednal was the French fighter ace Pierre Clostermann who detailed his experiences in his book "The Big Show"."

Thunder, I've loved airplanes since I was young, especially Spitfires... one of my favourite books is The Great Circus (P. Clostermann). And I've always wanted to fly one, and I found that the DSC could offer me just that. Just one little thing: when the Slovenian Army was doing a promotion for aviation 15+ years ago, we journalists had the opportunity to fly a Pilatus, and during the 1 hour or so flight, the pilot let me take the controls...and it was wonderful. Anyway, it's only now, much older, in fact just about to retire, that I found DSC and I've entered that world, I've bought the equipment and I'm learning. Well, I haven't mounted the pedals yet, I'm doing everything slowly. I can say that you are my teacher for flying with a spin. I have watched the video at least 20 times so far... ...but I still can't find something: where can I map the command for the fuel cut off lever? Or is the command called something else? If you can help, I will be glad. Once again, thank you for the wonderful video and I wish you all the best in 2024...and in all the years to come. Vito
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 6 месяцев назад
That's awesome! And similar for me, loved aviation since I was a kid. Think you'll really like using the pedals! Glad you enjoyed the video! Have more of these coming, as I plan on doing all of the warbirds. I'll be in the sim later today and can find what that cutoff lever is called. One thing you can do, especially if you have tool tips turned on (a setting in the main menu options, should be on by default), is to hover your mouse over a control. The tool tip box should pop up with the exact name of that control which you can then look for in the controls page. I'll post back here later today once I find it.

I may have missed it but I didn't see the fuel pump switch turned on before flight. That should be on or you'll have issues with fuel feed at higher altitudes.

This particular variant had both the engine driven mechanical pump and the electric pump. We can use either so long as one remembers to activate fuel tank pressurization once past around 16,000 feet.

I miss having aeliron trim in a spitfire. My stick is slightly off centered in the neutral. Its so convenient in a Mustang. Spitfire sucks when you need to travel long range. Needs constant correction
@okakokakiev787
@okakokakiev787 11 месяцев назад
Once you get used to landing its easy simply because the landing speed is extraordinarily low and its extremely easy to slow down. Landing spitfire doesn't require any planning. Can do it quickly
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 11 месяцев назад
I miss having the aileron trim too, but we get the other two. Even in the aircraft with all three I tend to used the rudder and elevator trim the most. For the landing, it’s one of the more difficult ones to learn, and I thought the Bf-109 was tough.

You mentioned a push button that injected oil into the engine. So what's with the warning about not using oil referring to?
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 8 месяцев назад
Good question! That would be the oil dilution button located on the left cockpit wall, just outboard of the seat. Oil gets thicker as it gets colder, especially in wintertime. pushing that button will squirt gasoline into the crankcase which helps by thinning out the oil and reducing the oil pressure to allow a good warmup. In warmer temperatures it's not needed, but use is recommended when it's cold outside, around 40ºF or 5ºC and below.

been playing a lot with the spitfire, cant get the plane to fly straight...why?
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 5 месяцев назад
May want to check your key bindings, especially the axis settings. DCS has a habit of auto-mapping them in unusual ways. Quite often the stick axis gets mapped to toe brakes on pedals for example. If that isn’t it and you are just having a hard time keeping straight and level, use the trim. Rudder trim first and then elevator trim.

@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation Год назад
I started on Steam with DCS but have since shifted over to the stand alone version. Couple of good reasons to be on stand alone; there are better sales than on Steam, and you have access to the free trial program where you can try nearly any aircraft free for two weeks, every 6 months. Also with the stand alone version, you get a new user discount, which gives you 50% off your first purchase in DCS, not available on Steam. Lastly, there’s also a loyalty program that earns you points with every purchase, that can be used on future purchases. My recomendation is to go with the stand alone version. Hope this helps!
