My grandmother dipped Garrett snuff and used a coffee can to spit in. But to make it more presentable in the parlor or living room she would stuff the can with tissue or toilet paper to absorb the spit and she crocheted covers for the outside of the can.

My Dad's old business partner took up the habit of chewing tobacco for about a year. He eventually quit, but not before the left side door of our blue delivery van was coated black with his leavings. Now do a story on how they kept the sidewalks and streets clean.

My daddy, while working for the Railroad, made a stainless steel spitoon using a Folgers coffee can as a pattern. He did it that way so Papa could use the plastic lid as a cover. He made one for Granny as well. She enjoyed dipping snuff. We always knew Granny was level headed due to the juice dripping from both sides of her mouth.😊 Great video as always.

When i was a kid in the early middle-half of the last century, a friend had an uncle who chewed...Elephant Butt chewing tobacco. This man kept a spit cup on the door of his car but continually missed it. Also never cleaned the door. But he was always good for a ride into town or a six pack when we couldn't find anyone else to buy it for us.

My maternal grandfather used to chew and used 1 lb coffee cans for his spittoons. I remember him putting the lid on it and sitting it on a car floorboard. He offered all his kids $100 if they did not use tobacco or alcohol until they were 21. Of 10 kids 8 lived to be 21 and all but one got their $100. My thought was--that's probably a pretty good chunk of change for a dirt farmer in the 1930's.

I was reading about the Republic of Texas and a German tourist toured an iron ship on the Brazos first one he's been on and the only complaint he has is where the carpet was was just a giant brown crusty stain where people had been spitting there tobacco. He assumed the carpet underneath was pretty and had nice patters but couldn't see it because of the tobacco and he even said there were spittoons but no one cared they just spat on the floor. Great video as always keep them coming!

When I was a kid in the 50's & 60's, the old-timers of the day still had those brass spittoons in the house and on the porch. My step grandpa was an accurate spitter. Him and grandma used snuff in those little tins a hair bigger in diameter than the 35mm film cans we used back then. He had a 3lb coffee can on the porch to spit in. I could move it off the porch a little further each time, and he always hit it! I also remember the coal shed in the front corner of the yard. I had to fill the coal scuttle a time or two during the day. That's another one you could do an episode about? Coal sheds and scuttles!

One of your best. I completely freaked out when I saw the ad for Piper Heidsieck chew tobacco. Now, of course, a famous champagne brand. After a few moments on the web I see that a) they no longer make chew tobacco and b) around the turn of the 19th/20th century they marketed a 'champagne flavor' (original spelling = US English, no idea if it was sold here in the UK) chew tobacco. Yikes. 'Pools and rivulets'! Perfect. More seriously, TB bacteria are indeed present in sputum, but only if this comes from the lungs. You would have to be very unlucky to contract TB from someone spitting!

I remember going to Washington on the Brazos Texas and they had a section about Tobacco refuse on the floor as extremely common of course this was in the early 1800s but I could only imagine the smell

When I was a youngster I hung out in a pool room that still had a western style bar and a spittoon as well. I vividly remember a cue ball jumping the table and landing in the spittoon. Yuck! I haven’t thought about that in years. Thanks Santee!

Back in 1980 I was in an aviation school in Oklahoma. A friend and I rented a school plane on a weekend for a flight over lake Texoma. Greg was constantly spitting into a styrofoam coffee cup. It was bothering me. I climbed the plane and pushed the nose over to zero-g. A long stream of spit came out of the cup and right into Greg's lap. He quit the tobacco chewing in airplanes from then on. He's a great guy. Just don't use coffee cups as a spittoon in an airplane with me.

i'Z can say that i dun did dat too. see' the Lost Horse Saloon ' Marfa. 2012 i cleaned 99 places/clients in our lil west Texas town. now under new management. Men an know some of 2 previous owners. for Wranger i washed a weekends load of dishes and the whole bar as part of my odd jobs. So i wunder and who will bet if the new owner continues to keep one at end of brass foot bar. ??? my oldest Gunny sgt brother did chew...

I dipped Copenhagen until 1999. At some point I had a brass spittoon I found at a flea market, but I vaguely remember it being run over and crushed by a truck. Once I was laying in bed watching the Xfiles and had an open can of Pepsi and a Pepsi can I'd been spitting in, and I grabbed the wrong one to take a swig. 🤮

my grand father had one in his den growing up. He smoke from a pipe but didn't chew. later My mother told me he would use it as a urinal becasue there was only oen bathroom in the house on the first floor and the den was on the third. He was missing a leg from ww2 and didn't always want to go up and down the stair just to pee. He had a bed pan too but preferred the ring of the Brass. LOL

When I was a kid it was still against the law to spit on a sidewalk and you were considered crude. If you road in the back of a pickup with chewers, you sat right in the middle behind the cab or you had to be a fast ducker. Whenever a head turned toward a window you ducked. Riding a motorcycle presented a worse situation and why I always wore a helmet and easily rinsed jacket. You come up hehind a farmer going slow, as soon as you started to pass he would try to nail you. Trick was to stay behind until he spit and pass immediately. It would take some time but they couldn't hold it long especially if they had a passenger to yack at.

Fascinating, but gross at the same time! It's amazing what was considered okay then is far from it now. Like adding coke to coca-cola, or certain deadly paints for painting homes, etc. People just didn't know.

I'm thinking that spittoon was considered a low class word-recall how the train guy in Liberty Valance was about to give Senator Ransom Stoddard a spittoon but quickly changed it to cuspidor. By the way, Popeye the sailor called it a "cuspidoon." in the original comic strip. Disgusting? Think of the floor of an average 1940s baseball dugout. Eesh!
