+Melissa Brooks I've never heard of bleached hair fading. If you're speaking of a different color fading, I'd bleach your hair again to get the rest of the other color out. Either way, your hair should take the color. The lighter the blond pre-color dyeing, the brighter your color will end up being. It's up to you to decide what degree of brightness you want the pink to be. I hope this helps!!

I think you'd have a good chance of it showing up well without the bleach. Also, if you're hesitant to have a drastic color change, not bleaching it could make it more subtle. Then you can test it out for the first application and fully commit later if you want to in your second application. Whether or not it looks good (if that's more what you were leaning towards in your question), I believe it depends on your complexion and the undertones of your skin. Warmer tones are more peachy, and cold tones are more pink. I hope that helps! Good luck!

Thank you! you have great questions. :) 1) I'd say you should definitely bleach your hair, maybe even a couple times. you saw how dark my hair is and my hair was bleached twice to get that color payoff. It just depends on how your hair reacts to the bleach. The original color may come out quickly/nicely; in that case, bleaching it once would be sufficient. Without bleach, the color would only show if you were in direct sunlight and would show lightly then as well. 2) If you decide to bleach your hair and color it in the span of the same day, you can definitely let the color stay in overnight. I'd just make sure you rinse the bleach out well, let your hair dry, see how fraglie/brittle it is and condition it if needed. After the bleach, you won't need to use shampoo, but I'd definitely let some conditioner sit in your hair to help the strands stay strong. The color won't damage your hair, but if you condition after coloring, the conditioner may loosen the dye that needs to bond to your hair. After you dye your hair, you should rinse it until the water is almost clear and let it fully dry before doing anything else to it. Personally, I didn't do anything to my hair (didn't even wash it) for the entire weekend after dying in on a Friday night. It definitely helps the color last. My hair is still fully purple in many spots and a purple-pink in other spots. Many people tell me they like my "ombre" hair even though I didn't mean for it to be like this, and it's been 6 months since I dyed it. 1. If it's mostly blonde, I wouldn't bleach it again, but that's mostly because I wouldn't want to risk damaging my hair more. But, if you have thicker hair (By that, I mean the individual strands of hair are thick, and you don't just have a large quantity of hair. You can have thick hair because there is a lot of it, but have thin strands. Or, you can have less hair with thicker strands. Or, you can have averagely thick hair with an average quantity of hair. :) ) it'll be more resistant to the effects of bleaching and cause less breakage. Overall, it is up to you, though. If you want a really bright color, you can bleach it again to an almost platinum color. But, if you are okay with a slighly darker color, keeping the blonde should be fine. My hair was definitely not fully platinum and I loved the color payoff. 2. The bags are just there to keep the color from getting everywhere. I decided to sleep in the color so it would last longer and I didn't want to get the color all over my linens and pillows. Note: The bleaching step is the part you need to be very careful with timing so it doesn't damage your hair too much. The dyes for Splat don't damage your hair, so you can leave it in longer to acheive a longer color payoff. I hope that was helpful! Good luck! -Sophie

It should last at least 5 washes if you don't take extra percautions to prevent color bleeding. Some tactics to keep the color in is to 1) wash your hair every 2-3 days, 2) wash your hair in cold water [warm water will make it bleed out quicker] 3) keep the shampoo on only the roots of your hair. [shampoo is meant for your scalp and roots anyway, and it will keep the color-stripping chemicals away from the rest of the colored hair.] 4) keep the dye in your hair for a longer time than recommended. From what I've tested, the dye will stay longer if you leave it in for a longer period of time. I hope that helps!

The bags I used were actually just the bags of air you find in most Amazon or online shopping shipments. I didn't want to spend any more than I had to - broke college student - so I improvised. As long as you have tight enough rubber bands or hair ties securing them, they should work just fine. Also, since more than one come in a box, I double bagged them to have an extra layer of protection against a pottential hair dye leakage.

If it is dark enough to be considered brown, I'd definitely bleach it. It just depends on what color you are going for. If you want a vibrant/light/neon color, you should bleach it. If you are going for a darker color, tnot bleaching it may be fine. I wouldn't worry too much either way. If you are already blonde, you would have to bleach it for a much smaller amount of time in comparison to a darker color, like mine. As for me, I didn't bleach it because I was dyeing it the same color on the same portion of hair. If it were my whole head that had the color, I'd definitely have roots showing by then and would have bleached the roots.

But, if you have brown hair you probably shoud bleach it unless you want it to unly be visible in the sunlight. With drak hair, bleach is a must! In the box, the bottle of dye is ready to go and only needs some shaking beforehand. The bleach is the only process that entails mixing a powder and a liquid.

I’m sorry to hear that! My suggestions: Make sure your hair is completely rid of the bleach and dry it good before putting the dye on. Try to keep that dye on as long as possible! And when you “wash it” after, don’t use hot water! Cold water is hair dye’s best friend! And use minimal shampoo or no shampoo if you can. My hair was just super dirty and oily from not washing it before re-dying, so I shampooed it. I’ve heard the dye takes better when your hair isn’t squeaky clean. Not exactly sure why, but it proved true for me! Good luck~

I'd imagine that it will progressively fade back to a bleached yellow tone. I haven't let it fade all the way yet, but since hair isn't alive and doesn't receive a nutrient supply from your body, none of the melanin would be able to come back on it's own. You'd have to dye it back to your original shade.

Hello, that's a good question. I'm not exactly sure , but since purple is made up of red, I assume it will mostlikely fade to a pastel pink as well. Some reds turn an orange/bleached color, so it may be slightly lighter or slightly more pastel orange-pink as well. Since you have streaks of red, I think having mostly pastel pink and some slight orange would look nice! Like a sunset. :)

You're fine using the color on top of your existing color since the color you want is the same, just darker. If you were trying to go from dark to light, then I'd bleach it, but you're good! No need to bleach! :)

I believe so, especially since you're going from a light color, like what my hair was, to a darker color and it's the same color in essence. That's why you can go from brown to black more easily than, say, red to black. Red has a different undertone and can sometimes be visible-particularly in the sun-as undertones in newly black dyed hair. Good luck! I hope you like the color! It was great for me.

Good question! If you have naturally black hair and want a part of that hair to be colored, then yes, you should bleach the part of your natural hair you want dyed. But, if you've already colored your hair the color you want to redye it and you are fine with having the new black hair that has since grown in, then you don't have to bleach it if you don't want to. That would be more for color blocking or anything that isn't your entire head. If you want to have all of your hair the new/touched up color, then I would definitely at least bleach the roots. Dying a lighter color on a darker color yields little if any effect. So, when in doubt (if your hair is strong enough to support it) go with bleaching it. It will always yield a brighter color. Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. Do you have an idea of what went wrong? It may be the temperature of the water you used. What about bleach? Did you have previously bleached or colored hair? From your picture, you seem to have dark hair.

It shouldn't have come out then. It is true that the warmer the water, the less color stays in. I always washed my hair in freezing cold water and it lasted 6 months for the second application and 6 weeks for the first application. You may want to email Splat. I'm sure they'll refund you or something similar.

I'm not sure, but I personally don't see why you can't keep it. The bleach has a bleaching power that you have to mix into the oxide, so I wouldn't keep it. But, the color just comes as a bottle of dye - no mix ins. So, I don't see why not.

Kristen Marie it starts expiring the second ota opened. Most hair dyes do not keep if its mixed. Brands pike Manic Panic, Ion, IROIRO, keep well but not for 6 months. For example if y9u bought a tub of Mani Panic & only used half of it, the last half will still be okay in a month when you touch roots up, but much pinger aftee that doesn't keep so well.

Sophie's Channel Like I said, rainbow type colors alone with nothing added, unopened will keep but, boxed natural colors can not be opened & used later. Its a chemical reaction that happens with the oxygen that expires it. Especially bottled bleach. as soon as you mix the chemicals, its done, it will not work later. it turns into a weird foam. Ive even had a bottle explode in the trash can in my bathroom when I was a teenager. lol

Could you drop a link to a picture of hair that is similar to your shade? Browns are tricky since it really can depend on the depth of the color and type of hair to figure out how well the color will stay and how it will coat or mix with your hair color. My hair originally was bleached to a darker-mid orange before I said “screw it” and dyed it anyways. I’d rather risk a slightly different color payoff than fry my hair. And you can see how vibrant the purple was after orangey hair initially. It was the same color as after this touch up. So, I think it’s mostly your call. It could end up more vibrant than you want, or it could just be visible when you have sunlight going through your hair. My sister tried red from her natural hair color and it was just like that, only red when the light hit it a certain way.

@@sarahsidener13 Thanks! I’d say with the chocolate brown + red tint would be possible to no bleach, but the dark golden would need to be bleached. I think if you want any sort of color payoff other than a tint, you should bleach it a little. It doesn’t have to go to white or anything. Just think about the color wheel and how the purple and lightening brown would work together. The lighter you go, the brighter the purple. The faster you take it off, the darker and more subtle it’ll become. Sorry I can’t be of much help further! Wishing you the best~

That is one of the down sides to affordable do-it-at-home brands: the bleach can be damaging. I can't choose for you, but I can give you suggestions. 1) Most cost effective= just go with the Splat and keep a good eye on it, checking often for the lightening of your hair, and taking it out as early as possible. (The overall time it needs to be in your hair depends on how light you want it to be and how dark your hair is to start.) 2) Use a brand that you trust's bleach and the color from Splat if you can't find an equivalent color in another brand's line. 3) least cost effective, best for damage control = get your hair lightened by a professional, then go home and dye it however you'd like for a fraction of the cost of a salon. As for the color, mine stayed for about 4 weeks the first time I tried it and 6 months after the second application. It isn't permanent, so it shouldn't stay in forever. (I can say that when it does fade, it doesn't fade fast, and I've never had it go all the way back to the bleached color.) It is, however, made to be a long lasting semi-permanent dye, so the goal of the brand is to make a product that will last. If you are looking for something that won't last more than a month, I'd find a different brand that is known to stay for a short time. I hope that was helpful! Sophie

+GamiZawr The bleach is definitely good for the price, but doesn't come with a toner, so it turns out yellow. It may not turn yellow for you though since your hair isn't dark like mine. Also, you'll be dying it a different color, so if it does turn out yellowish, it'll only stay like that until you bleach it again. I think you'll be just fine! :) As for products, I've only used Splat, but I did a lot of research beforehand and Splat had much better, consistent reviews whereas Manic Panic had some nice reviews, but they weren't consistently positive. +puppy life The Splat Purple Desire Hair Dye is semi-permanent. It should last anywhere from 2-10+weeks. Permanent dyes are much stronger and generally last until the hair is cut off or grows out.

It will progressively stop bleeding. At first, it'll seem alarming, but the color won't fade out much until a couple weeks later, if you take colder showers. If you like readlly hot showers, the color will bleed out very quickly.

You can still take hot showers. Just dont get your hair In the hot water. the colder the water when you rinse the longer the color will stay

Not if you have already dyed your hair (THE SAME COLOR) or have naturally blonde hair. If you have naturally dark hair, bleaching is always a better route. I just didn't want to damage my hair anymore and was satisfied with the lowered (because my hair had grown) length of the color. If you are trying to dye all of your hair, it's best to rebleach/bleach your roots.

Mine lasted different periods of time per color application, but generally was between 6-10 weeks. My advice is to take some measures so the color stays longer, like not damaging the hair often with straightening/curling, washing it fewer times a week, and taking cold/cool showers. Heat kills the color, so it is best to avoid it! Hope everything goes well!

Isabella wilson If you’ve already bleached your hair to a blonde color, just use the dye. The lighter the blonde, the brighter/more like the box color the dye will become. In general, the darker the blonde, the darker your color will be once you dye it. But if you *just* bleached your hair and want to go even lighter, give your hair up to a week before re-bleaching it, or you seriously risk damaging it beyond repair. Personally, I didn’t have the funds for the nice bleach and toning stuff before originally dying my hair and when I did use the box bleach, it lifted my hair to a slightly orange yellow color and I dyed it anyways. The color was darker than the box, but actually looked more natural if that makes sense... It looked like a more natural fade from real hair color to purple since the purple was darker. I think it would have been more choppy and less ombré had I lightened it more. But it all depends on the style and color brightness you’re going for in the end. If you want brighter, lighter blonde is best. Good luck!

Most likely, you either 1) didn't use a strong enough bleach, 2) didn't leave it in long enough, or 3) both. My guess is you it was probably a mix of both. The fact that some of your hair didn't change color at all makes me think you didn't have a strong enough bleach, especially since your hair is black. If you used the bleach from Splat, it should have worked though. They have pretty powerful bleach. That being said, you may not have left your hair in the bleach long enough. The box instructions are a good guideline, but it should only be used as a guide. Thinner hair will decolor much more quickly, so the bleach needs to be watched carefully. Thick, dark hair takes longer. I believe I went a little longer than I was supposed to because of my hair being dark and thicker than average. I hope that helps! Good luck!

I think it wouldn't hurt. Also, it'll give you extra dye that you may need if you have thick or long hair. Also, try to keep in mind that the bleach works best on non-recently cleaned hair and it CANNOT be wet already. Bleach has to be applied to dry hair. Good luck!

It wouldn't break off. The dye doesn't have any bleach in it, so it doesn't actually hurt the hair follicles. The bleaching process is the one that must be done by the guidelines; it damages the hair.

It depends on many factors, not just the dye itself. Such factors include time it sits on the hair, quantity of dye that is placed on the hair, the color/ lack of color of the hair, and the thickness of the hair. It's not all the hair's fault, but the dye's instructions are made for specific types of hair, so they should be tailored to the thickness, properties of your hair. Thicker hair should be let to infuse longer, whereas with thinner hair the time necessary is less.

I've mainly used manic panic. It has good colors and they havent faded as fast.

Not necessarily. You don't have to if you are using the same color, as I was. It damages your hair less and has the same result. Why damage your hair you don't have to?

I'm sorry you had this experience. Each hair structure is different, so certain dyes work better than others. I guess Splat's formula isn't tailored to your hair type; which makes sense since your daughter had the same problem. I'd try Manic Panic. I hear they have pretty good reviews from their customers.
