There's a lot of small differences but overall i think i like this version more! The telephone dialog is so different, i don't know why it was so different in the noa version. Also i don't know how to describe it but captain cuttlefish feels more... i want to say competent. In the noa version he feels more goofy and unsure of what's happening but this one still feels goofy but he seems to know what he's doing moreso, honestly this version is genuinely better and i have no idea why some of this stuff was changed
The reason it was so different is because it’s different to convey roboticness in japenese then in English. The [SLANG NOT FOUND] and [CONTEMPARAY SPEECH MODE] are only in the translations. On japenese they use different pronouns which would translate to « I » in English like « Waga » but in japenese if you say that it would mean you are gender neutral and you think highly of yourself and are robotic.They also use different “kanji” which is like writing for us with cursive and normal writing,but there it also translates to roboticness and weirdness,like something is fishy. As far as I am aware this is only present in the English language,because other languages “like the one I play in,French” stay closer to the japenese version.
In this translation, Commander Tartar says Big Shot. Commander Tartar is based off a telephone. Now, in Splatoon 3, we have a new Salmonid variety called a Big Shot. I have no idea where I'm going with this but it's all connected trust me.
You know, this is how Telephone talks in the Russian localization (except for all caps and brackets maybe). I guess we sometimes use the Japanese localization as a reference :)
Oh yeah, most other non-US localizations also are mostly closer to the JP version. I just decided to use the caps and brackets to get the roboticness across, which was achieved in JP by having all of Tartars sentences end in katakana, which isn't directly translatable outside of Japanese
Even though I knew that this was a fan translation and the way Commander Tartar's voicelines were translated was inspired by Spamton's speech patterns, I still screamed in disbelief when I actually saw the bottom text at 6:51 Amazing work! I'm a person who has never played any of the Splatoon games, but I love their visual style, character design and worldbuilding and I appreciate the love and passion that was put into this translation.
I'm late to the party, but it's cool seeing how Tartar idolized humans when humans (in this universe) were probably acting just like the inkfish like we do irl.
1) For some weird reason, in the final boss phases, it feels like Pearl and Marina are talking a ton more than usual, weird, considering i replayed it yesterday.. huh. 2) i love the little nuggets of personality and charachter shining trough the dialogue! 3) IT'S EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE [no.1 rated phone 1997], COMMANDER T. Well yeah, this is a fan translation though lol And the big shot part is one of the things I snuck in that isn't part of the original dialogue of course, but I couldn't help myself hiding some funni's in there
Dang.. this translation is really good. I like how it in a way makes Cap’n Cuttlefish less.. well.. stupid… which was a tiny gripe I had with octo expansion. I don’t there there were really more than 1 or 2 times where I really felt a line was out of place in a way like the regular octo expansion or felt like a line needed to stay like the original English translation. (Also, I think the ending is really where the translation shines and it gives better context and I would have 100% preferred it over the regular ending)
MY GUY!! You and rassicas did an absolutely beautiful job on this!! The dialogue just feels so much more natural.. (if that makes any sense) It gives a whole new life to a lot of the characters. And thank GOD the contemporary speech mode with Tartar speaking in old slang was removed. It’s not that I hate it, I just thought it was an odd choice made by Nintendo of America. And having Pearl talk about Marina and her manga club where they pick up 8 and he captain gave the whole story more “anime/manga style vibes” which I absolutely loved. Well done! :D
i think they did the old slang because the metro is supposed to feel outdated and old. and I guess it would be hard to listen to scientist mumbo jumbo all day
Man… the entire octo expansion just feels so… special. The atmosphere is so polished it’s amazing. The story is perfect and the characters all interact with it in such a natural seeming way. The translations and other small touches like the logo in this mod really bring it all together! I’m a bit sad that the splatoon 3 story mode didn’t really live up to the incredible expectations set by the octo expansion (imo), but I hope we’ll see a story on the same level as this for the splat 3 dlc. If we don’t get that, at least we have the great expansion experience to come back to :)
I like the fact that tartar as the phone here doesn't speak slang like the US version one does, again both are fine, but i kinda prefer spamton-like tartar fantastic job on the mod by the way :>
Overall you did a great job and this was cool to see. Some of the NOA dialogue I prefer over the stuff we got here but this is definitely better in that there’s more lore we never got in the NOA version.
Thanks! Yeah that's the thing, I do like the NOA translation as well for its style, but some parts twist the original meaning so much that it had to be changed. Even then I tried to keep the overall flair while making it more accurate, but there's always a trade-off. Still, glad you liked it

I think obs studio is used for this/is a main factor for quality, considering how the description states the video is used with yuzu emulator (for pc) at 1440p
