Well. This video didn't age well. It was just announced for the next splatoon 3 season 🙃

Some fixes for the kraken: 1. Give it health insted of invincibility 2. Don't make it a one hit kill 3. Add more startlag so it's not a panic button

Honestly my take on this is that Splatoon 1 wasn't ever really trying to be all that balanced, unlike Splatoon 2. If I'm not mistaken, I think in the Splatoon 1 Direct, when they highlighted the specials, they more or less DESCRIBED the Kraken as being a panic-button. It honestly wasn't designed to be much else other than that. I'm not saying Splatoon 1 didn't try to rebalance its meta from time to time, but it wasn't ever really trying to be balanced overall. Splatoon 3 right now is trying to find a compromised area in between the ultra balanced 2, and the unbalanced 1.

I feel like Baller was more split into Crab Tank and Reef Slider. People always say that Slider is a direct replacement for Splashdown, but I think it’s a mix, what with the armor, run over splats, travel distance (albeit much shorter than baller).

i remember being 12 trying to use kraken and not understanding that I need to press anything to kill people and getting so frustrated lol I thought I could roll over them like a roller

Random lesser known kraken technique that I recall doing at least once back in splatoon 1: using it mid-superjump to surprise someone who was waiting to take you out when you landed. That was always a really funny thing to go for and I was super happy with them one-upping it with splashdown in splatoon 2, but now that both specials are gone in 3 I'm kinda sad there's no way to replicate sort of thing with any of the new specials.

idk if this is a good idea, but here is my rework proposal for a more skirmish-ey Kraken: -When the Kraken starts, a marker like jet or zip will appear. The user will jump to this spot when the special is over, due to either running out of time, or a certain amount of damage being done to the Kraken (Yeah it's not really invincible this time). -Like the original Kraken, it can swim in enemy ink, is pretty fast, is vulnerable to knockback, and can one shot if the user gets too close to the enemy. -This Kraken has a longer duration than the original, but again it will have to jump back if too much damage has been done. -At half health (or whatever would be the most balanced), the position of the marker will be revealed to the enemy team. In lower ranks, this could be a very powerful killing special because it's kind of similar to how a roller can sneak up and roll new players. In higher ranks, it could be a skirmisher/distraction special. If the enemy team ignores you, they will get one shot. If the enemy team focuses on you, you will buy them enough time for your teammates to do whatever they need, or finish off the opponents. The jump marker lets the user just focus on skirmishing and getting the most out of their special, but there also has to be thought put into the preparation part of the special. The player has to focus on using the special at the right time (so it won't easily get canceled and be a waste, but instead will help force the attention of enemies on you), and a good position for the marker (In a place where the enemies won't be there to cancel the jump back when they find it, but also close enough to have enough time to skirmish in the enemy lines)

Just because crab tank rolls up into a ball does not mean it is a next gen baller. I can see your comparison between kraken and baller, but not at all crab tank and baller. The reefslider is definitely the baller evolution

I do miss Kraken but man Crab Tank is friggin awesome. Might be the best special right now. It’s part of the reason Splash is so good too.

A idea for kraken (along with start up lag) is that if you start getting shot at you should slow down as a result. This will give kraken a high reward high risk design meaning “while yes you are invisible and can crush anyone in your path you need to be careful because if you start get shot you’ll set your self due to how slow you’ll move. I also think crab tank is pretty boring to fight against, yeah sure it can be destroyed from the back but the thing is…who wants to go behind a crab tank…almost no body. And it doesn’t help that the maps are in the backlines favour which makes this special even worse to deal with. It also makes heavy splatling almost nonexistent because crab tank dose heavy splatlings job on a much better scale (this is coming from heavy splatling main btw).

The recent update in Splatoon 3 brought back the Kraken.

You can jump with hammer to do a jump swing thats nearly identical the kraken jump. Reefslider gives you invincibility for a while while crab is more a of baller.

I hated fighting Krakens so unfortunately I’m feeling a bit of schadenfreude here… I don’t miss it. But seeing Sprinkler from 1 in this video made me miss it. I was a Sprinkler main! I loved everything about the sub. I miss when it was that good Also it’s not like you even said anything crazy in this video, idk why some of the comments here are kinda aggro… like damn 😭

Ok here’s a bit of a head cannon I have for why the kraken disappeared: and that’s the kraken was simply banned from both regular and league battles due to how overpowered it was. Not only that it was banned any ink weapons that had the kraken ability was confiscated and destroyed or got a replacement special. This special was so powerful that it became a actual law that inklings are not allowed to carry any weapon with the kraken special even when it evolves work like salmon run. Some say there are still some lost ink weapons still with the kraken ability but those are just rumors.

Damn I joined up in splatoon 2 I don't even remember a kraken that would be awesome to bring back.

I see a lot of people saying they should bring back a reworked kraken that has hp and doesn’t oneshot. And look, I get it. Kraken is iconic. But… that’s baller. Seriously. Look at it. It has a slight startup time, hp instead of invincibility, kills in 2 hits instead of 1 by running into people, and even has differing damage mods on it to help lower dps weapons. It’s everything people say they want out of kraken, but we all know that baller was one of the most disastrous special designs Splatoon has ever seen. Even Nintendo knows it. Here’s how I see it: With the release of Splatoon 2, the special list was updated to feature successor specials to those in Splatoon 1. Killer wail to sting ray, inkzooka to inkjet, bubbler to ink armor, bomb rush to bomb launcher, echolocator to tenta missiles, inkstrike to splashdown (no really, think about it. You target a point on the map and bomb that area with a large circular explosion from above), and of course, kraken to baller. Out of these, there were some winners (inkjet), but many were very unhealthy by design. The worst offenders, though, were splashdown and baller. Being self-centered defend-and-counter specials, they were impossible to balance between being panic buttons and completely failing to do their jobs. I think that, after years of trying everything they could think of to balance these specials, the devs realized that their design was just unsalvageable. That’s when, seemingly way too late into the game’s lifespan to have been planned, booyah bomb and ultra stamp were released. Splashdown was unfixable, so they made a new successor to inkstrike in the form of booyah bomb. And it’s great! It does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Then, that leaves the other… Ultra stamp is one of my favorite special designs of all time. It perfectly preserves the unstoppable feeling of charging through the enemy’s front lines with a kraken, letting you run opponents down and swat them with a one-hit jump swing that prevents them from challenging you in melee range. Yet on the other hand, it has well designed weaknesses. It preserves kraken’s one-hit kill, but gives the enemy a gray area in which they can still escape alive if they just barely manage to get out of the way. The poor handling and exposed back serve to make the special fightable in a way that isn’t “just shoot it,” which is an *incredibly* lame weakness for a kraken-style special to have. The stamp user still has counterplay, as they can cancel rush mode near instantly and swim around at full speed-it just takes time to start it back up. And the throwing capability is just the cherry on top. It’s a perfect addition to make the special extra fun and give it some personality, and it’s quite useful. I mean, really, you can’t tell me that being able to throw your kraken at the enemy when you’re done with it isn’t awesome. Of course, stamp comes with a fatal flaw. You get shot through the front. It was a cool idea, but in practice it just makes the special unreliable and is far too crippling. Make ultra stamp completely invulnerable from the front during rush mode, and you have yourself the perfect successor to everything kraken is supposed to be. So yeah. It’s a shame that kraken never came back, since it is a very iconic special. I know a lot of people were hoping for it after trizooka, big bubbler, and wail 5.1 were announced. But honestly, I think that kraken lives on in spirit in just about the best possible designed balance of fun, powerful, and competitively healthy. Just… *please* stop letting people die through the front.

What happened is that kraken made you fully invincible and gave you a fast one hit kill as soon as you activate it and it has no cooldown. Its obviously fun to use but has no place in any game thats meant to be balanced also comping it to other specials is kind of stupid because past splat 1 most specials are made for specific purposes while in splat 1 the specials are all just about making yourself better at fights for a short time (bubbler makes you and teamates fully invincible, kraken obviously, inkzooka give you a long range fast instakill) with a few exceptions. I dont think any futer specials were made for the same purpose as kraken so its like comparing apples to chocolate cakes, there both food but aside from that their completely different. Baller is meant to be a panic button to escape bad situations (which sure that a thing you could use kraken for but baller can be broken), reefslider is the same thing as splashdown which is nothing like kraken( a single strong attack that is clearly telegraphed and has downsides when used recklessly) and crab tank which just has nothing in common with anything previously mentioned. What a stupid title for a video

It should just be a rip off of the big man boss fight with a squid shadow instead. You’d have your main kraken like shadow you control and a bunch of small shadows in your color that go off in random directions after you take damage

“Major downgrade” Actually baller was much more balanced than kraken, but still gave you that option to fight or flee. While crab tank isn’t close to the same, as the armour is still weaker than baller, and it’s more about long distance attacks, rather than close up.

i don't think kraken is gone and may have returned. I say this because I was in a lobby playing turf war with a bunch of randos but one person in particular splatted me during the match. You know how when you get splatted the camera fixates on the person who splatted you? Well, it did just that but lo and behold what I saw left me dumbfounded. It was no denying that it was a Kraken, with brown fur with an orange gradient, and it's eyes look like the swirly ink that Lil Buddy eats. I downloaded the replay and uploaded a 30 second clip on twitter and took an image of what i saw. I don't know how the person who splatted me managed to change from Kraken to inkling form but I know what I saw and it was definitely a Kraken, but in Alterean form.

As a person that still plays S1 today, I don't understand why you would want to bring back invincibility special. I would probably be fine if it had HP in addition to what you said but invincibility is just too strong, even if it can't be a panic button anymore because leading the rainmaker with kraken is way too strong

Kraken is cool and all, but no matter what, it should not come back, especially since Splatoon has moved out of the invincibility specials phase. Kraken would be horrible for the game as it is still a panic button. You pop kraken when you’re about to die and either kill 2 players or run away.

Hate to be the party pooper but Kraken stayed in Splatoon 1. The baller is not anything like Kraken. I understand why the ultra stamp would be considered similar but I view it as more of a complete rework if not a new special.

Hey numskull, the reef slider has no connection with the baller and was not at all intended to be played in a similar way, it was made to do what the splashdown couldn't by giving the player horizontal mobility so you can use it to rush in from a safe distance and so you can use it to speed away from enemies if you have no other option. Reef slider is a well designed special and is a great option for retreating and attacking, you just need to git gud

I think that splatoon 3’s specials are the lamest ones yet. They are so terribly nerfed that they are not or no longer useful in pretty much every game mode. They were so afraid that the specials were going to be over powered that they made them pretty much useless in damage and ink coverage. What I thought made splatoon 2’s specials so great was that they were all over powered and it actually took skill to avoid them. Not only that, there was a lot to choose from. If all the specials are overpowered, everyone is on equal playing field. The only thing in their way is skill, and I’m not dissing anyone bad at the game it’s just that people should get better instead of specials becoming duller. Thank you.
