Splatterhouse Arcade game custom cabinet and electronics

This year for Halloween I finally got around to making a 'deadicated' cabinet for Splatterhouse. Aside from a lot of little details on the outside, I also added some circuitry inside that allows me to detect what's going on in the game program as it is running and in turn trigger real world effects based on in game variables. (Right now this is just LEDs, but it could be smoke, or shaker motors, or whatever amuses you.) It's about 4AM, so pardon my somewhat scattered rambling. One take and it shows. ;-)

I went into Ground Kontrol yesterday and saw this and I couldn't believe the creative craftsmanship; the control panel just hit me! Something in the back on my mind told me this wasn't stock. This is the coolest non-environmental arcade cabinet out there! The people at GK better take care of it.

Thanks for visiting GK! Life in the arcade does have its wear and tear-- all the raised lettering and details have been picked off the foam of the control panel now, but other than that it's actually holding up pretty well.

I was blessed to enjoy this during the Halloween season of 2013 before the 'upgrade' at Ground Kontrol. I was wondering where it had gone and now I see I was just lucky to have seen it at all. Had I known it was going to be there for such a short time I'd have worn my hands to dust playing it. It's a beauty, I do hope I get to see it again someday.

Glad you got to check it out! We had it out on the arcade floor for a while, but people picked all the soft control panel apart and we put it in storage after it got too ratty looking. It's on my 'to-do list' to make another control panel with some solid plastic that's a bit more vandal-resistant,so it'll come back at some point. ;-)

This is AWESOME. I thought I was the only one who'd thought of the whole 'haunted cabinet' idea (I'm working on creating a custom Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3 cabinet, inspired by Doom 3). You've eclipsed the ideas I had for my own... Kudos, sir. It looks great!

Pretty creative I remember playing this machine inside a circle k nearby my high school they also had a ninja spirit arcade machine as well and they both ended on the turbo graphic home console bring me back to memory Lane love it

ABSOLUTELY EPIC , LEGEND HAS IT THIS WAS CREATED IN DR WESTS BASEMENT !! The lighting on the cabinet at the beginning looks like the force that tries to consume you if you stand still too long in the game , you even got the photo frame from the poltergeist boss , just amazing

The 'daughterboard' plugs in to the main CPU socket and watches the address and data bus for the processor. I found the memory locations that hold various in-game statistics such as number of lives, health level, number of credits (coins), game level, etc. A microcontroller on the daughterboard is programmed to interpret these values an then make certain outputs happen-- for example, if it sees the player 'health' go down it will flash the red lighting behind he monitor, etc.

I watched this video about a month ago and thought it was really cool, then just a couple days ago i went to ground kontrol arcade and i see this cabinet in there and i say "holy shit this looks just like the one from that video!" and sure enough i watch this video again and you said was for ground kontrol. anyway seeing the cabinet in the video was cool but seeing it in real life and playing it was amazing. great work man!

Thanks! Glad you got to see it in person. It's getting a little 'worn' at Ground Kontrol-- people have picked off the foam lettering and stuff from the control panel, but other than that it's still working pretty good!

Hey Nathan, good to hear from you! I'll keep an eye out for another old Defender cab for you. (All the molds and stuff are setup for that size/control panel.) I usually get pretty amazed by what some people put into their custom designs, but I don't think I've seen one that really speaks as much on a 1:1 level as this one. Do you happen to still have it?

I do-- we had it in our arcade (www.groundkontrol.com) for the better part of a year, but people picked away at the foam control panel so we pulled it from the floor. I'll redo the control panel out of hard plastic instead of the squishy foam-- the foam was cool, but not rugged enough for extended exposure to "the public". ;-)

As real as any of them, I supose... The game was only available as a kit in the USA, so there were really no 'factory' original cabinets to the best of my knowledge.
