+ Von Perry Photography (Tahoe Picked) is always coming up with great challenge lock ideas and this split-core padlock was some really creative thinking. Thanks Tahoe for pinning it, and thanks Joshua for sending it to me.

Good to see this old friend. Nicely picked (and nice editing)! And yes, that's my original wire. I taped it to the lock before sending it to JH.

Thans LPL. Glad I remembered your video of this one or I'd sure have been scratching my head when, a: the lock opened up so easily, b: it opened after only picking the first few pins, and c: the shackle didn't open. Thanks for making the wire to join the cores. I don't think i have any music wire that would fit.

Nice! Cool and creative lock. Looked like an interesting battle to determine what is going on inside and to get it open. Great job! I love the wild and creative stuff. Like that old lock made by JW that Schuyler showed in one of his historical talks.

Thanks man! Yeah, it was all muddy and squishy back there. Pretty tough to feel anything. Fun lock to pick though.

Awesome work on that one. I would have to say that's some of my best work when it comes to a challenge lock. Now I'm working on a split mortise cylinder.

schlage ships their locks with nickel plated bottom pins. those are likely just the modified originals. Nice picking as always

The Rogue Locksmith They were nickel plated pins from LAB. I find I get sharper serrations because they are a little harder.

That makes sense. It would be hard to imagine cutting hardened steel like that. Thanks for the info :)

I totally remember LPL picking this one. great work. And I think ive heard that Chubb made a detector lock if im not mistaken.. but I dont want the lock.. if Im right

I think poor LPL got the brunt of having to figure it all out. The Detector is exactly the lock I was thinking of. Sure you don't want your name in the hat?

Great picking man! To answer your question, how about the Avoset mk3 ABS? I'm thinking the trap pins are pretty much a pick detecting relocker...

Clever trick to pull with a lock, LOL. Gotta be careful not to pull the front half out when you pick it.

Did you know that Chubb detector locks can detect overlifting levers, countering lockpicking, overlifting and trying out keys at the same time? :D Regarding your video: Haven't seen this video of the Lockpicking Lawyer yet, and never seen a split core in the wild! Pretty interesting to see it getting picked. Got two pretty stupid ideas for messing around with this lock: 1.) After picking the front of the lock, nothing prevents the front part of the core from being removed - so after picking it one could simply turn it and remove it, and remove the first three drivers and springs which will pop out next. What's left would be a three pin lock in the back which can be tensioned with a long tension wrench. 2.) The core being split and the two halfs not interacting with each other would mean that one could try to just pick the pins in the back if it's possible to tension and turn just the back of the plug (maybe with some L-shaped wire or a dimple pick flag), completely ignoring the front of the lock. Don't know if that would be anough to overcome the spring tension, but it sounds pretty fun to me! xD Great picking! :D

Sweet! Thanks man! Sorry about not seeing your full comment... To your points: Yes. in the configuration I had the lock, nothing prevented the core from being pulled once I picked the first half. However, Tahoe said he had filed a groove on the lip of the plug that interfaced with a sprung pin inside the body to prevent this. I had already packaged it up and sent it on before he mentioned this, but apparently the pin was either missing or stuck. Also, yes. You could certainly pick just he back half and open the lock. That's a cool idea that never occurred to me. Kinda wish I still had the lock to try it.

That split core is awesome. Never seen one before. I was reading through some patent info on a cool lever lock, any chance you're gonna show off the chubb detector? Says it would take great skill to pull off, love to see.
@tedpark6814
@tedpark6814 7 лет назад
You know, when I searched fleabay for "chubb detector" all I got were stupid smoke alarms, not the lock that snapped down when a lever was overlifted. Judging from the amount that an original Best padlock went for, I bet that that lock would go for a small fortune. I think that "Dominion Lock" is no more, it would be nicer if the lock was sent on in unmodified form.

Thanks for watching man! I would love to try and pick a Chubb Detector... I would LOVE to get my hands on one, LOL.

I have never seen a Detector for sale. If one ever did pop up and the person knew what they had, I'm guessing it would be all kinds of insane in price. I would love to have one, but I kinda doubt I ever will, LOL.

I remember lockpicking lawyer's video on this too! Great job man, that's a crazy challenge lock for sure. Is that a .020" pick you're using? Also I was just reading about the Chubb detector lock, that seems like it'd be an interesting challenge. I hope that's the right one haha. Man, I have so much to learn still!

nice lock. if I would guess it was made from two cores. if it was cut in half. it would throw off the alignment to the bible. from the kerf loss.
@tumbl3r
@tumbl3r 7 лет назад
I was thinking the same thing. It would be hard to imagine something that could cut it enough to preserve the alignment.

Excellent picking and gutting. Only one question. How you do reckon he managed to split the core? I was thinking did he hacksaw it. What do you think? Thanks.
@vonperryphotography8024
@vonperryphotography8024 7 лет назад
APACHE-LOCKSPORT I did use a hacksaw! I started with 2 cores to account for the loss of material after cutting.

Glad he chimed in here. I was thinking that must have been what he did, but it's nice to hear it from him directly. Thanks for watching man!
@tumbl3r

Thanks for clarifying this... I'd imagined this is what you did. How did you get the cuts to parallel?
@vonperryphotography8024
@vonperryphotography8024 7 лет назад
tumbl3r I had a guide for cutting bicycle handlebars. It just happened to to fit. Then there was many hours of filing to get the fit just right. The grove around the front of the core so it doesn't pull out was all done by hand.

WOW! That's awesome! This must have been a labor of love for you! Very very awesome work! Unrelated note, I hope you're doing OK up there with all that snow! I was in Tahoe around Christmas and it was already getting crazy.

Nothing actually... This happened to me once and pins went everywhere.
@vonperryphotography8024
@vonperryphotography8024 7 лет назад
tumbl3r something must have happened to the lock. There is a groove on the front lip of the core. I had a set pin installed on the lock body that ran in that groove that kept the front of the lock from coming out. I'm guessing the pin got pushed in. LPL talks about it in his video.
@tumbl3r
@tumbl3r 7 лет назад
Interesting. I'll take a look at his video. I don't remember seeing that part.
