I may recommend using a maul vs axe. They are virtually the same price and half the work. Axes tend to only have the momentum of the swinger vs a maul where the weight of the head acts as a multiplier on the swing giving more energy per swing.

Quite enjoyable. Wood splitting is good exercise, cathartic, and can keep your house warm. One quick comment/suggestion/question: I have heard you should NOT use the axe head as a wedge due to messing it up or shattering it? Have you heard of that? Not criticism, just wondering if you ever heard the same thing.
@gardenfork
@gardenfork 8 лет назад
+Jack lynch Hi Jack, yes, there is an issue with mushrooming the axe. this hasn't happened to me, but its better to use a wedge to finish the split. I should have addressed this more in the vid. And yes, its great just to get outside and do something physical. thx! eric.

@gardenfork

It was a pretty crazy experience.

Bit of a teaser about best to split upside down and not explaining how. Trees have a rounded upside down V just above where a branch came out the trunk called the branch bark ridge. If your log has one turn it so its a V (point facing down) and awzy you go.

@Brendan_O
@Brendan_O 8 лет назад
yes, that's why you are supposed to use a spitting maul or axe not a felling axe. never hit an axe with a hammer, the pull/flat side on a axe is meant to hit soft steel or plastic wedges to free a saw when it binds.

you will get more leverage with a large block of a log like 20" by the same or a trunk of a tree as your chopping block. you will save your maul or ax edge and you will also save your back, which is well worth it.
@gardenfork

+Rev John O'Toole yes, good point. my goal here was a basic starter vid for someone who has an axe in their shed to get started. thx!
@jonathanmulzer17
@jonathanmulzer17 9 лет назад
+Rev John O'Toole Yeah, you want the top of the log you are splitting just slightly higher than the point where your maul handle is level when you swing it. You get a lot more power that way, and if you have a large enough stump to work off of, you can pick up almost all of your wood off of it and save some bending over when you re-stack it.
@happytreefriends1fan
@happytreefriends1fan 9 лет назад
+Jonathan Mulzer also, if you have a junk tire around, the logs that will fit can be split with far less bending over because the tire helps to keep them from falling over or flying off, this way you can swing 6-8 times and then have all the pieces at arms length and not have to bend over with every swing to get the wood vertical. also g-fork, you don't really want an axe to split wood, you want a maul.
@happytreefriends1fan
@happytreefriends1fan 9 лет назад
+happytreefriends1fan on second thought, this was probably only convenient because we cut our stump down when it started getting rotten, and it got pretty much ground level by the time we got tired of bending over and tried using a tire..
@happytreefriends1fan
@happytreefriends1fan 9 лет назад
+happytreefriends1fan also, i kind of laughed while watching this. it's funny to watch someone explain something you do in your spare time 3 out of 4 seasons of the year in a way that is intended for complete beginners.

once you have a grip of the wood with your axe you turn it over lift it of the ground and put over your shoulder then slam the axe head on the ground and the weight of your wood make the axe split your wood
@jasonscott4525
@jasonscott4525 3 года назад
Just a heads up, not recommended to be banging on the pole of your axe with that sledge. It will cause mushrooming over time and will warp the eye of the axe causing your handle to get loose and even have the head of the axe fly off. The only time you can get away with this is if the pole of the axe is hardened. If you’re banging with a sledge, use a maul, they’re built to take abuse.

The poll of an axe is not made to be struck by a sledgehammer or anything else. The metal around the sides of the axe head is thin and will be deformed. As a result the handle will come loose in time. This practice is definitely not recommended.
