Splitting BIG Rounds! ( Fiskars X27 )

March 2022 update: the axe handle is still in nearly new condition after 5yrs of using this technique. I now flick my wrist at the end of each splitting stroke, which increases the splitting power tremendously and keeps the axe handle from hitting the log round.
Hope this video helps you get the job done faster and saves your back. Cheers!

keep the chain attached at the end, and move the whole split round at once. that's a big one, so it might be difficult depending on a few things, but on medium rounds it saves a lot of stacking time.

Today i ordered my Fiskars X27. I had to decide between a 4-5kg splitting maul and this splitting axe. I prefered the Fiskars axe, because of the long handle (96 cm) and the weight of 2,6 kg. It has enough power, but also a great accuracy.

I found the over strikes kinda difficult to watch, even tho Fiskars has a lifetime warranty, and I just bought one. I just think its a bad habit, and if you were to switch to a wood handled axe, in my opinion its a matter of when you smack the handle, not if. Mark, keep making videos and have a great day.

You know wood is brittle when it splits from being hit with just the axe handle (:41) If the handle had been made of wood it would have made it about half way around! I did like the chain and bungee cord.

@SeekingSnow

Good luck with those giant rounds!!! Oak is a whole different beast from the spruce I split. On something that large, I would start by flanking the outer edge, popping small pieces off the perimeter first, to get it down to a more manageable size.

I'm glad I found your videos! I recently started splitting wood and I'm down here in SW Arizona. We have a lot of ironwood out here and some type of wood that smells like popcorn when it is burned. How is that wood in the video splitting so quickly? Is it just a matter of the wood's density or sharpness of the blade? A lot of rounds I've gathered are pretty tall, around mid-thigh.
@SeekingSnow
@SeekingSnow 5 лет назад
Hi Joshua, the easy splitting is a combo of several things. First, make sure you have a solid base that doesn't absorb Any force from a strike on the log. For me, that's frozen ground. I split exactly where the weakness in the grain of the wood is. I keep my axe shaving sharp. It helps to have dry wood and cold temps (the colder, the more brittle the wood becomes). Also, I'm splitting sitka spruce which is pretty soft. 27lb/ft3. Good luck with that ironwood!
@waynejohnson9855
@waynejohnson9855 5 лет назад
letting iron wood get dry will make it harder to split, some wood may split better dry but most does not believe me i cut plenty every year. the colder the better it splits as mark said.

Mark Walters soft wood or hard wood it seems soft wood
@SeekingSnow
@SeekingSnow 5 лет назад
Nikos, thinking "hard" or "soft" wood is misleading because often times softwoods (monocots) are "harder" - more dense - than certain "hardwoods"(dicots). Instead think of the wood density of the tree species. Sitka would be considered soft but has density (hardness) greater than certain Willow species, which is considered "hard." Hope this helps and good luck with your wood splitting this winter 👍

I dont want to offend you. You look like a strong man with good technique. But, that wood is like a sytrofoam/polystyrene. Here in croatia, black dalmatian oak rounds like that, just ring when you smash the axe on them. Its their laugh at your inability to chop them. You are lucky to live wherever you do, with such a soft wood

I bought one today. The steel is soooo soft I got burrs and dings on the blades edge within 5 minutes of swinging. And the performance of this Fiscars is exactly the same as any other splitting axe of same weight with same length handle. Nothing special at all, so don’t know what all the hype is about. My $30 Yardworks splitting axe does exactly the same thing
