Today I was talking to a friend about getting bigger elephant ears by splitting them. They didn't know how to do this or did they even know that this was possible. As I was about to get started they decided that it would be cool to video this to show other people as well. Especially the person that they got the elephant ear bulbs from because they too didn't know that this was possible.
Hope that this helps you and thanks for watching!

I did this tonight.it was so root bound even though I only bought it this week. I had to saw through to part the 2. Fortunately I was able to get plenty of roots on both plants.

Nick, my Elephant ear leaves grow upward instead of downward. My Great Aunt said it was called an "Ox Heart". Anyway, I have 2 pieces of the original plant from my Great Grandparents home place back in the Arkansas hills. They must be split up this year but I have a lot of the base stem above the dirt line that I don't know what to do about. There are several sprouts from the base that are still in dirt. Any suggestions as to the original (above ground) stem?
@GardenMack
@GardenMack 6 месяцев назад
Hey Denise. Yeah some varieties depending on if it is an alocasia or Colocasia will typically determine the growth habit of the leaves, upward or downward, so that is why. As for the original above ground stem you should be good to just split them and replant elsewhere if you like. Sometimes they just happen push up above ground, kinda like some hostas do , but still able to be split and moved. -N

@@GardenMack Well, Mack, it's been a little more than 2 months since I busted up my Ox Hearts. Now instead of 2 containers, I have 7! They are growing like crazy! Pots I thought I only had 1 in have sprouted more pups so I will have to bust them up again next spring. One pot has 7 in it. Not sure how that happened. Do they prefer shade or will they thrive in direct sun?

Bravo well done thank you for that but how does one separate them when they are planted in the ground 🙂
@GardenMack
@GardenMack 3 месяца назад
Thank you! Basically you're going to find a spot in the stalk and drive a shovel or spade down through and separate them that way. You will hear a lot of crunching and stuff but that just lets you know that you are getting down to the Corum and splitting it. For an example of the please see my banana pup splitting video. It will show what I am tryna say on here much better. They are in containers but I had to do this without taking them out of the container first. So same as if in ground. -N

@@GardenMack Thank you for responding to my inquiry and concerns. I never know when its the right time to do it. I purchased a gardening knife after I watched your video . I cut several pieces to thin it out . They didn't have any bulbs just roots which I tranfered to other areas in other parts of the garden and several in large pots. Should I have added any sort of fertilizer. They don't seem to be doing well , Thank you

So do you typically plant one plant per container? I have about four big plants in one large pot and they seem to not grow that well, I feel like they're probably fighting for water and nutrients. Any thoughts on this?
@GardenMack
@GardenMack 6 месяцев назад
I typically try to put one per container depending on the size of the pup or moreso the container. Once one gets established its mission is to put out more pups so besides, not wanting it to become rootbound, drying out constantly and losing nutritents, thats what I typically base my decision on. Hope this helps! -N

Do the pups continue to grow? I have a thailand giant with 4 pups planted in a container. The mother plant is putting out new leaves but the pups seem to have stopped growing. I plan on digging a large hole in my yard and filling back with compost.
@GardenMack
@GardenMack 6 месяцев назад
Yes the pups will continue to grow as long as they still have a decent root system on them when separated. Make sure to give them time to acclimate off the mother plant and out of direct sunlight as soon as transplanted if at all possible. -N

@normanziegelmeyer7693 1 hour ago I enjoy your video and learned much.I have a question, we planted a large bulb about 3inches in diameter given to us by a son last year.When dug up last year I saved the big one and 3-4 babies.They were planted this year and I noticed the small ones grew very well and produced large leaves but the large one only produced small leaves. Is this normal? do the leaves normally get smaller as the bulb gets older ? Last year the larger one produced gigantic leaves. Thanks
@GardenMack
@GardenMack Месяц назад
No that isn't normal but it does happen. I would give it til the end of the year or growing season and if it still produces small leaves you an split it in half and dry it out and try that OR since you have others that are doing well... just toss it and focus on the others giving you the results you want. -N

So just pull them apart? Roots and all? That doesn't harm the plant.
@GardenMack
@GardenMack Год назад
yep...pretty much... when you pull them apart you want to make sure to break up the roots as best as you can. This was just a spur of of the moment type video any other time I would adv that you use a knife or saw to cut down through. If you are going to pull them apart like this,... make sure to pull down and way at the same time. Might take some practice and no need to be in a rush when you do. Best practice is I would transplant in the evening or place in a new pot/ container and place it in the shade for a few days if possible and water well! hope this helps! -N

Is there a right time of year to do this? I kept mine going through a UK winter by bringing it into the laundry, so it's doing really well. Can see from the pups on it now that its probably root bound. ( great advice, thanks for the video. )
@GardenMack
@GardenMack Месяц назад
I wouldnt say that there is a right time to do it... but I would definitetly say that I probably would stay away from doing it when it's cold out...if you are dealing with them outside. If you think that they are root bound, then go ahead and split them up and watch them take off individually after they get reaclimated and settled into new spots! It amazing! -N
