In Zone 7 Elephant ears can be a little iffy. Sometimes they don't make it through the really cold winters. There are a few little things you can do as extra insurance that will help those elephant ears through the winter so they will regrow next spring!
Elephant Ears
Colocasia esculenta
Zone 7-11
Propagating through Division in Spring After danger of frost has passed.

That's exactly how I winterizing my banana trees. The only difference is I not only use mulch, but I also use moving blankets from harbor freight to cover them. Works great, they come back every year here in Oklahoma.

Exactly the info I was looking for! We’re new to zone 7b, gardening my 3rd season, here in mid TN as well … and discovering all the beautiful plants that go with it. I can’t wait to add these to my gardens!

I also live in zone 7 and this method didn't work last year when we had a couple of days that reached single digit temps. I will dig and store my new ones this year inside.

I had put one in a damp spot in a hole between 2 of my cement pavers last year. I never got it out. I was SURE that thing froze & rot under there. It endured some BRUTAL COLD. Maybe it’s saving grace is being right next to my foundation because SURPRISE! Myyyyy did it grow. I wonder if I can mulch it with leaves this year? It’s on old school pebble concrete slabs... Will that be a yucky clean up or attract termites? I’m zone 6

There's probably something to the location and warmth it got. I think if they are close to the house.l, especially on a sunny side, it's like move a hardiness zone warmer.

Great channel! I have the EXACT size elephant ears in my Garden in central NC, same zone or close to yours. This week 1-16-22 has some low temps in the 15 degree range for several nights forecast, the coldest in 3 years since I planted mine. Mine are very well established and I have never covered at all, they came back HUGE each spring. Would you just cover with leaves? What else besides leaves, I really love these and don't want them to die? Any advise we be great! Thanks!

I used leaves because it creates air pockets for insulative benefits. Grass clippings and mulch will work as well, but leaves are free in the fall!

Hello, I watched your videos about the Japanese Maples and I’m curious to know how they are today. I’m starting mine but a bit insecure. Thanks

I cut my Elephant Ears off (ground level) and covered them with leaves. When should I remove the leaves? I live in zone 8.

Being in zone 9 means mine won't die off unless we get a freeze and that's usually later in the year. They multiple very quickly here.

You're in a great zone to grow them! I love the look but you never know if they will make it through the cold each year.

I overwintered mine in the garage, overnight lows are ranging between 38-44 degrees, Seattle zone 8 b Can I take them out now? Also Canna Lillies ? … pretty sure we won’t get freezing temps.

@Growingthehomegarden 3 месяца назад
If your temps are safe from freezing you should be good to put them outdoors. I'm not sure of the Seattle weather so check what your local last frost date is first.

Got a huge problem with the elephant ears all around my house that are died off. How do I up route them and yank them out without getting a hernia!?!
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden Год назад
I think you're going to have to dig. Wet the area to loosen the soil. Not where it get muddy but just enough where you can work easily. If you just want to get rid of them offer them up to local gardeners to dig for free. I'm sure you would get a bunch of interested people and you wouldn't have to do the work!

@@Growingthehomegarden again thanks for the tip because it’s been dry through the cold. It’s supposed to rain really good the next few days so I’ll probably do it toward New Year’s I guess

I forgot to bring in my potted elephant plant outside. They look like yours. What should I do? Bring them in the house?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 2 года назад
If it's potted I would bring it into a garage area to overwinter. Indoors will probably trigger growth with the warmer temperatures.

@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 2 года назад
@@terriwilliams1648 I think in that case I would probably bring them inside. They may grow indoors for you but then you have a head start on spring.
