Splitting & Dividing Leggy Heucheras (Coral Bells) 🌺

Splitting & Dividing Leggy Heucheras is really easy to do and a great way to get free beautiful plants for the garden.
The best time to do this is in Spring or Autumn. And you just need to dig up your Heuchera as after about 3 or 4 years you’ll notice they start to grow long leggy stems which can get quite tall.
Once you have the plant out of the ground, just pull each single stem apart, take off all the lower leaves and cut the stem to about 2 inches long, take off most of the leaves so the cutting doesn’t have to try and give all its energy to lots of leaves, and bury the 2 inch stem either straight into the border or into a pod of multipurpose composed.
Keep it nice and well watered and you’ll have lots of new little plants!

Hello Stacy and thank you for subscribing 🙏 it’s so lovely to have a new gardening friend. I’m pleased to say that this video was over a year ago now, and I have so many new heucheras now. A few didn’t make it, and I gave lots away, but I have many new ones now. It seems so harsh when you’re cutting up a huge plant, but it’s worth it. I have another large Heuchera which has grown old and leggy so I will do that one next. Blessings back to you over there n Lakewood WA. 😊🩷

Hello there and thanks for watching. This video was over a year ago now, and I can honestly say it does work. I had so many plants (as you saw) and gave lots away, but the ones I kept are all now lovely new plants. I few of them didn’t make it but the majority did. It does seem awful taking a large plant apart but they do get big and unattractive after a while. I have a few more I will be doing this to soon. Wishing you success!! 🩷😊

Thank you Janette. This is very informative. I do have some very old heucheras that would probably benefit from being divided. I have broken some and stuck the pieces right in the ground and they did regrow, so you are absolutely right that they are tough plants.

Hi Jeanette, great video ! Again I've learnt new skills added to my gardening toolbox! I have a few heucheras plants in my garden, think they are called plum pudding. I have noticed after a while they do become ugly wish I had watched your video earlier and know how to divide and produce lots of new plants. I enjoyed the way you demonstrate the process, the music, the time lapse camera, your easy and relaxed personality. Question What will you do with all those new plants? You mentioned replacing your tulips, do you mean dig them up and replacing them? Thanks once again for your time and effort showing your garden and sharing your knowledge. S

Hi there Stephen and thanks for watching. I’ve actually planted a few of these back into my borders, and I’ve given most of the others away and I have about 6 or 7 still in pots so I think I’ll just dot those in somewhere. Yes I pull my tulips right out because they never come back very strong here, just short and often just leaves with no flowers, plus I like planting new ones wiry different colours (but I hate doing it in the cold of October so have to force myself). I still have some left, but they won’t be around for much longer. Happy Sunday Stephen 🥰

Hi Janette. I planted my first ever heucheras last autumn, so I'm very happy you shared this information. How often do you think they should be split? Every year? It's May 😃❤. Normally things should start warming up after "les saints Glaces ". The ice saints, this is on the 11th 12th and 13th. Gardeners here say that after this, we can plant out whatever we want. That would be great because I just don't know what to do with all of these seedlings! 😅. Have a lovely week 🙋‍♀️
@TheEnthusiasticGardener
@TheEnthusiasticGardener Год назад
Hi there Kim, I’ve not heard of Les saints glaces!! But I think those dates are what I’m thinking too. I bet you can’t wait to get all your seedlings out, it’s hard work caring for them at this stage in the game. With regard to how often to divide your heucheras, I think perhaps every other year should keep them under control. And then what I failed to mention is that if you just do it the “cut them in half down the middle” (easier) way, it’s probably a good idea to bury the second one nice and deep and maybe even dig up original clump and put that down lower too. I must make sure to do this more often. 🥰

Hi there 😊 yes I guess you could do that so they are a bit larger to start with. I actually filmed this video around April 2023 and a year later most of them have survived. I gave lots away to friends and now the ones I kept are really good size heucheras again. I fact I ended up with far too many I couldn’t have kept them all, I wouldn’t have anywhere to plant them all 😂 I do have a few more large heucheras I could divide so I’ll probably do that but it does make so many 😊 saves a lot of money though. Hi Janette. Having watched many of your videos you have given me all sorts of gardening ideas and like you I have a love of the many different varieties of Heuchera. I have planted 5 different colour variations In my front garden and the leaves on 3 of them are quickly turning yellow and crispy. Any idea what might be causing this and what can I do to resolve the problem. Have you yourself had this problem. Cheers Nigel.
@TheEnthusiasticGardener
@TheEnthusiasticGardener Год назад
Hello there Nigel and thank you so much for watching my videos and for your lovely comments. Yes, a few of my Heuchera varieties suffer with scorched leaves, it’s the ones with lighter coloured leaves. They really prefer partial or dappled shade, but the darker leaved ones can often tolerate more sun, and it may even enhance their colour. The paler ones can more easily get bleached or scorched in a bright spot. I suppose it’s a bit like us with our skin tones, a very fair person is going to suffer more in the sun than if you have darker skin. But I do think that once they’re established (and not brand new in the garden) they start to handle it better. I did actually go outside yesterday and cut off a few burnt leaves from a couple of mine. I don’t know that I’ve helped you much though because that’s not much of a solution, but on the whole they are very tough and so beautiful so I guess just keep them watered in the hot weather so they can settle in. Or you can get some umbrellas and dig them into the ground in a row over the top of them (I’m joking of course 😆 but I bet there’s someone out there who would do that 😆). Wishing you good luck and a great week ♥️

Hello there Hillary. I have put some of them back straight into the ground and I will give some of the pots away to friends and family. You still have snow? Where do you live? Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a lovely week 🥰

Do you have any idea how old those are, that stem was like a small tree trunk. I never thought about dividing them while still planted, I seen Paul, at Paul T's World divide a hosta that way. Hope yours all root, I'm sure your mom and garden friends would love 1 or 2.

Hi Wende, that centre stem was huge. I remember planting them in 2020. I’ve stuck some straight into the soil and I think I’ll give the others away. If you just cut one in half then I think it would be a good idea to reset the first bit lower while you’re at it. They have shallow roots and tend to kind of heave themselves upwards. 🥰

Oh yes I am subscribed to Jes, but problem is I’m subscribed to about 100 Garden channels 😆😆 I have an addiction to heucheras, and garden RU-vid channels 😆😆🥰

Well I feel totally honoured that you always watch me then Wende, because as much as we’d like to watch every video from everyone we follow, we’d need to put the rest of our lives on hold 😆🥰🤪

@@TheEnthusiasticGardener I just go down the list, I open blue dots, some I don't watch if it's something I don't need to know, or 15 mins of weeding and planting..aka..garden answer.

Good morning Cindy and thanks for watching. They definitely do root and grow on to be new plants. Of course a few did die but one year on from this video and I’m pleased to say most are happy new plants. Hope you’re having a great weekend 🩵💜

What to do when tulips lose their petaks

Hi there Barbara, thanks for watching! There’s nothing you can do once tulips lose their petals. Unfortunately the flower has finished then. It’s such a shame they don’t last longer. 🌷
