Hey. I'm disappointed that you did not show us the nice clean split face at the end, otherwise great video. Amazing what you can break with the small wedges, I have some of these little ones, and some that go in 35mm holes - they never cease to surprise me in what they can break, some jack hammer driven ones for 45mmm holes and some huge hydraulic ones for 48mm holes. Hi! I would never in my life have thought that someone would be interested in viewing my videos when I split stones. Most of them were filmed to show relatives what I’ve been up to, and most of them were mildly amused, that’s why some of them are sped up and not really showing the end result. But subscribers and viewers commenting my videos has opened up my eyes that there actually are some interest. So I will be show more details from now on 👍 I do share your amazement when it comes to how big boulders you can break with smaller wedges 👍

Great video! Rather inspiring! I was wondering what sort of chisels you are using in the video? (Any recommendations for a beginner?) It looked like one of the Carbide tipped ones, but, having used carbide metal cutting tools I would have thought they would be very delicate and liable to cracking?
@workingstoned
@workingstoned Год назад
Thanks for watching 🙏 It is indeed carbide tipped tools, I use a hand tracer and the hammer version of that tool, both with a carbide blade. As far as I know they are indeed brittle, that’s why you should start out easy and not strike to hard. When you established a line and have full contact between the stone and the blade you can start striking harder. If you were to tip the tracer a little and have one edge in contact with the stone and hit it there is a chance you can chip the blade. Thanks for your comment and question.

@workingstoned
@workingstoned 2 года назад
I do hope he treats you well 🙏 I’m lucky I’ve got, what seems like, endless supply of stones and boulders. So I only need to spend money on tools and drill bits, and It basically a “cry once” deal when it comes to carbide tipped tools as they last a very long time, besides drill bits, they wear out or break easier. Do you plan on buying stones or do you have working materials on your property?

@@workingstoned where I live the top soil is only a couple inches and you hit rock. There's good forest dont get me wrong but not much turf. I make old school shelters with clay and wood but want to incorporate stone. I just need the hammers to get started. I blacksmith a bit with my dads left over hammers so I am no stranger to banging on something all day. I'm not sure if I will be able to justify getting rock hammers and chisels for a while but so far as chisels I could forge one up. That fancy hammer you use against the rock and strike with another hammer looks like the cats meow though so I'll shoot towards a likeness in time. Actually the only video on my channel is a fort I showed my daughter how to make when covid first hit and we needed something to do. Minimal stonework but I had to make a point to find flat stones

Can I do this to help flatten a rough area of a granite Boulder? I bought a large one but it’s jagged on the side I like and I want to smooth it out making it a little more of a flattened surface for engraving. Any tips or warnings? I don’t want to cause any cracks.
@workingstoned
@workingstoned 3 года назад
Usually when flattening out a rougher area you chisel off the higher spots and then work the surface with a bushing hammer/tool. Be careful with the edges of the boulder as they break easiest, I don’t think you risk splitting or breaking off a bigger piece with a bushing hammer, just go slowly and see how your boulder reacts.

Was there a fault or crack already there? Or are you cutting where you want it?
@workingstoned
@workingstoned 3 года назад
There was no fault or crack. I traced the split line and drilled a few holes and it split like I wanted it to. I used smaller wedges than usual, just to test their capacity.

Wow that’s amazing! That’s actually how I started my “venture” in splitting stones, I had a boulder blocking the pathway of a fence I was building. After that I just kept going since my lawn/yard is littered with big boulders. I’m glad it inspired you.

@@workingstoned the fence is up and I couldn't have done it without your video. I struggled for two days using a grinder with a 4.5 inch diamond cut blade. Then chisel and sledgehammer. Wasn't working. But drilling the holes about 10 inches down which is about half way through and about 1 inch apart. And then pounding rebar in each hole worked. It broke right in half. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Great job! Drilling and splitting with wedges is a very effective way, or in your case, rebar, I will have to try that one out 👍 always interesting to hear other methods than the traditional ones.

Don’t know if the translator got it right, but. Yes you are right, fancy expensive tools, I know. You are very well off with steel hammers and you are able to to pretty much everything with steel tools that you do with carbide tools. But I enjoy working the stone, not maintaining tools. Carbide = durability

your drill bit was too big or your wedges were too small. practice makes you know what. :)
@workingstoned
@workingstoned 2 года назад
The drill bit is actually on point, I can’t use a smaller one. In this case it’s a matter of design. The wedge is very short, so the split doesn’t happen until the wedge is driven down flat to the feathers and stone, that’s why I’m tapping them a little to make the split. I’ll see if I can import a drill bit that’s specified in inches to match the wedge and feathers.

Cool video bro amd bad ass name for a channel lol Just curious what are you splitting the stone for?
@workingstoned
@workingstoned 3 года назад
Thank you Gabriel. The name for the channel is a pun, a play with words if you will :) I don´t encourage anyone to work under the influence. With that said, my journey started with a basic need. A big boulder was blocking a path were I wanted to build a basic picket fence, and that basic need opened a new world and a huge respect for the art and trade of stone work and masonry. So it became a hobby or more of an obsession were I felt the need to break up more or less every stone I had at my property. Some of the stones I´v actually used to fix parts of the cabin, but I´m currently collecting stones for two traditional swedish dry stone walls. Thanks for your comment, I hope you swing by the channel again sometime.
