Black Locust grows straight and fast. You're young enough, you could plant a few hundred and in 20 years you'll have more firewood than you'll want to split. And it's cheap. You can buy 2' seedlings for $2 each. Buy 500 & plant in a way so you can keep the weeds in check with your mower. So, $1,000 and mow for a couple years till they can fend for themselves and you've got yourself a butt-load of high quality firewood.

That’s a very good idea 🤔

That's definitely black locust. Not only some of the best firewood, but also makes great lumber if you have a sawmill and can find good straight solid trees in decent size. Only things to watch out for are carpenter ants and poison ivy.

ya thats locust. it makes good fence post too. 25 years ago my brother and i cut a bunch of 8-10" locust poles about 8 foot long and split them lengthwise with wedges. it split surprisingly easy. they are still holding my fence up around my garden.

Locust has been my favorite for a long time. It burns hot, lasts a long time and is easy to split. Sassafras is a much lighter wood and is similar to poplar in the way it burns. I have a lot of big sassafras on my place . Some people say it is great smoking wood. I don't smoke but it burns good once it is seasoned
@765Guys
@765Guys 5 месяцев назад
Good to know! I know sassafras looks similar but I hadn’t handled it so I didn’t know the weight. The locust is definitely dense and heavy. Thanks for stopping by James!
@FatherOfTheParty
@FatherOfTheParty 5 месяцев назад
Could be black locust, honey locust has a little bit of a orange hue but lots of the same characteristics. Hard as bone but brittle so it splits good. Sometimes needs a couple wacks to get the split to propagate. Heavy and dense. Burns great. Dries decently fast.

Yes sir! Definitely locust now that you split it open! Love it! The woods behind our house is full of it. It’s actually considered an invasive species here in Illinois! Great firewood. As others have stated the bark will fall off making it even better in time. Take care Genin! Are you going to attend HFH 24😂👊🏻

One drawback to locust is if you load your stove with nothing but locust, you end up with hot coals very quickly, but they don’t create as much heat. By the afternoon, my stove would have 8 inches of red hot coals that heat the room, but not the rest of the house. No room to add more wood with so many coals. I’ve not seen this happen with any other wood?

Honey locust is similar- just much brighter in color. Someone developed a spineless variety, and it's been planted all over the northeast and E Canada as an ornamental tree. It'll grow damn near anywhere, and is very tolerant of air pollution- so many city streets are lined with it. Which, of course, means that tree services cut lots of it. Easy to identify: Bright yellow sapwood, and red/orange heartwood. Bark is thinner and tighter than black locust- and makes WAY less of a mess as it dries. Hard to describe, but distinctive to look at. It actually smells like pickles and tomatoes when split, lol. UNlike Black Locust- which is 100% poisonous, every part- honey locust beans are edible! VERY hard, splits easily into nice smooth pieces, and burns like coal. So hot, there's not that much visible flame. Some slabs would make for very cool looking table tops, coffee tables, etc. The grain looks very similar to red oak, but the color is a dead giveaway.

Nice wood! We find it in corners of old farm fields where most likely a farmer planted it for use as future fence posts. I've split wood by hand for 30 years and found the Fiskars to be my favorite.

Great wood with only one/two drawbacks I know of from years of burning it. The bark! Eats up sharp chains rather quickly, and leaves a lot of ash if the bark is left on. If you season it for 2 years though, almost all the bark will just about fall off or easily pulled off. When that happens, you have the ultimate firewood IMHO….Hotter then Oak and leaves a nice coal base too. Back to the negative…..the bark grabs tons of debris when/while in log form, if brought/drug in out of the woods. Keep it clean and it’s not so bad. It splits great by hand or machine and the bark that drops off or pulled off is great for an outside fire pit too. Just thought I would toss my 2cents in 🥸 Great video Genin 🔥🪵👍👏🇺🇸 Rick PS: one other negative……Carpenter Ants love this stuff !

One thing you will want to watch is that locust pops and throws sparks quite a bit when it burns. Just be aware of that, and take common sense precautions. Stay warm and take care.

Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. I am not sure what the science is behind it. When it is green and split it does have a honey scent to it and the bark is not as thick and stringy.
