Working with timber requires a solid axe with an excellent handle. After several years of hard service and neglect, my own axe collection is practically begging for some much needed restoration. In preparation for the work coming this summer and fall, I set out to rive out my own axe handle blanks.
The first block looked somewhat like hickory, so I tried it. Without seconds, I knew it wasn’t hickory. However, I was invested and decided to work up what I believe is a wood species rarely found in my native region near the coast.
While in the woods, I took the time to finish splitting an oak log into fence rails. When finished, they looked very much like those seen in 19th Century photographs. Just a few hundred rails to go!
Seeking out the remains of a hickory tree I had taken down a couple years ago, I found it in a questionable condition. Splitting it, I quickly surmised that it was in no condition to serve as handles or anything else really. It’ll make a very poor firewood at best.
We’ll return to the woods soon to continue our work in refurbishing our axes. Time is growing short so it is.

You wouldn't know how much work this is unless you tried it! I can testify to that. Especially when it gets hot. Hard to finish riving an entire 20 inch diameter log in 1 session! Great video. I know this is going to be my favorite series of yours so far! I hear there are actually riving wedges. Might be called slate wedges or something. They're long and thin from what I remember. I believe I've seen them with riving for shingles/chairmaking so those are relatively short pieces. I would love to find some. I also use regular splitting wedges but I start at the corners with a hatchet or boy's axe normally. I was going to say if you need any axes I'd help you out but it seems you've got things covered!

If you ever want to do some hafting for your channel, I’ll be glad to send some over for a “spa day” of sorts lol

Oh, and here’s a link to a book that goes into exhaustive detail on splitting rails. It’ll be my primary source when I do some serious fence splitting and building content. Splitting info starts on page 60: archive.org/details/youngfarmersmanu00toddrich

@@HiraethRestorations I do plan to do some hafting! I want to do from tree to axe but that's a long term plan. A lot of my billets are still drying. Can't wait to make some white oak handled axes!
