Splitting bearded irises is an essential gardening task that ensures these beautiful perennials remain healthy and continue to produce vibrant blooms year after year. Bearded irises tend to become overcrowded after a few years, which can lead to diminished flowering and increased susceptibility to disease. By dividing the rhizomes every three to five years, you give the plants more space to grow and access to nutrients, resulting in more vigorous and prolific blooms.
When transplanting spent bearded irises, it is advisable to cut the blades (leaves) halfway down. Trimming the foliage to about half its height helps reduce water loss through transpiration and makes it easier for the plant to re-establish its root system in the new location. This practice also helps balance the top growth with the reduced root mass after transplanting, giving the irises a better chance to thrive in their new location
Additionally, splitting irises allows you to propagate new plants, expanding your garden or sharing with friends and fellow gardeners.
When replanting bearded irises, choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Dig a shallow hole and create a small mound in the center. Place the divided rhizome on top of the mound, spreading the roots out around it. Cover the rhizome with soil, leaving the top just exposed, and water thoroughly to help the plant settle in. Ensure the irises are spaced about 12 to 24 inches apart to allow for proper growth and airflow.
