Hello Highly, it's not just about reducing time, it's also about making the drive smooth. Because the ambulance can always keep rolling and never has to perform an emergency break, the people in the back can keep working the patient.

I was just about to make this comment. Indeed, sometimes gliding transport is needed because of the nature of the trauma and police escort if exexuted well guarantees that the ambulance keeps 'gliding'

In this case it's about 'as fast as possible', you can hear them say it on the radio at the beginning.

Indeed, the most important tasks here are threefold; 1. Risk reduction for the patient and the team working on the patient in the back by avoiding emergency stops. 2. Providing a smooth ride and avoiding mishaps during delicate procedures, or protecting a patient with, for example, an unstable neck fracture. 3. Then comes speed / short travel duration. This includes choosing and providing an alternative route if needed (they did that here by the way). 4. You could add a role as being an early warning system for the public and taking control if needed. As you said HC at that final traffic light: some people don't know what to do or even freeze up when confronted with a situation like this. You could call this risk reduction as well. There also was some chatter on the radio at the end about another police unit being sent to "guard the perpetrator". Not sure if they meant the person in the ambulance, but that might have affected some decisions, like joining the paramedics team inside the hospital.

Translating these is hard But if anyone is wondering what the "rechtdoor, rechtdoor" means that is constantly mentioned, its "straight ahead, straight ahead" The first one is which turn lane (linksaf/left, rechtdoor/straight rechtsaf/right), and the second rechtdoor is for the direction they will actually be going. So "Linksaf, recht door" would mean take the left turn lane to go straight. If there are multiple lanes for that turn, they will usually specify which one. If anyone is wondering what they are saying at a specific point, comment a timestamp and ill see if i can translate it for you

4:27 They save quite a lot of time, because the ambulance would otherwise have to slow down for every intersection, despite the sirens and lights. Not everyone is paying attention, so the ambulance needs to be careful. Now, they can just keep going. This also prevents the patient and doctors in the back from experiencing constant braking and accelerating, making life easier for everyone on board. In same cases, it means the difference between life or death, not having to stop, as they need to keep the person a stable as possible, in all regards.

Many times, the reason that someone is in the way, is because there is no directly room to move to. The police escort cB arrange that room before the ambulance is there.
@patdbus
@patdbus Год назад
@@okkietrooy6841 they also make sure everyone knows that there is a escort on the way, so traffic knows before the ambulance arives that they better stay where they are. if an ambulance is driving solo you dont always know on time where it wants to go or even if it wants to use the space youre on, so with this they make sure everyone is paying attention and understands whats going on, making sure its better and safer for the ambulance and other trafic.

Hi there Highly Combustible At 4:42 you're talking about "the average time they shave off per transport". But it's not only about time. It's just as much (in some cases even more) about the 'flow'. Many times the people in the back of the ambulance are fighting for a life. Slowing down, speeding up, (emergency) breaking, etc., make that work a lot harder or even impossible. Providing a smooth ride in which the people in the back can do what they have to do without any interference is just as important. And sometimes that is just the MOST important part of the ambulance-ride. You don't often see them, but be on the look out for movies with the word "glijdend" ( = sliding/gliding) in them. In the case of a 'glijdend transport', it's not about speed and/or time at all. Take for example spinal injuries. When a patient with a spinal injury has to be transported, it has to be a smooth as possible, because any movement could cause the spinal injury to get worse. In those cases, the ambulance might go slow as heck, but the cops are there to make sure they 'slide' slowly all the way without interference. Keep up the good work!

About the red light. It's illegal to run the red light, even when you want to make room for an emergency vehicle. But policeofficers overrule the lights, you have to obey them. At 25:49 the officer stops another ambulance which has his flashers on, even they have to obey. On the channel itself is explained that that ambulance was empty and had to stop.
@foobar8894
@foobar8894 Год назад
Well, technically you are correct about it being illegal to run the red light. However, it you safely(!) make room for an ambulance by running a red light you will not be ticketed for it in the Netherlands. That would normally mean moving forward and aside, but not crossing the intersection, as that would create a dangerous situation for other drivers. Tickets from red light camera's are routinely dismissed for that (often you will not even get it, as the next ticket is likely to be the actual ambulance running the same red light). Road safety always comes first, it's always illegal to create a dangerous situation, so use your head. But taking that into account you can do the minimum required to allow the ambulance to pass, even if that is technically illegal. (People will always ask about red lights, but never about things like stopping at a bus stop to let an ambulance pass, even though that's illegal too.)

Looks like you were wondering what they were talking about around 12:00; despite the high level of professionalism one of the guys made a mistake. The third motorcycle (who was in front and taking turns with the guy in the video to clear the next intersection, while the bike in the top right stays with the ambulance) reported his position and it turned out he was on a different highway. There was some confusion about which route they would take and he took the wrong exit as he was speeding ahead. That's why you don't see him anymore on the highway section of the drive. He had to haul ass on a different route to get back in front, and joins back up as they enter the city. That's why he was already there waiting at 21:50 :D

So that took like 19 minutes from freeway onramp to entering the hospital and that's including you pausing the video. I used to live half a mile from the EMC. My friend used to live in Zoetermeer, not the exact neighborhood where they started, but slightly closer to the freeway onramp. When I drove, I had to adhere to the max speed of 80 kph near Rotterdam and 100 kph most of the other way, so they'll already be faster, as they were driving 120/130 kph according to the communications. I'd say they shaved off at least 15-20 mins when it was a quiet day like it was here, but if it was more congested it would take me longer. They probably would still take the same amount of time. Living where I did, we'd frequently have the crossroads blocked by local police as motor police came in from elsewhere zipping past with an ambulance in their wake. The local police would sometimes have things blocked off minutes in advance. On some occasions they would also do the same but for ambulances that drove much more slowly so lord knows what those types of transports were. And a funny but unrelated story, that hospital has a helipad too and there's a park across the road. One day I'm walking my dog there, literally at the field with the tulips where my profile pic was taken and... there's an ambulance helicopter sitting there. Door open, no one in there. My dog trots up to there, sniffs the helicopter, walks on as I stand not too far off to intervene in case he lifts his leg (he didn't, thank goodness). I spot a guy in a weird suit sitting on a bench, eating what presumably is his lunch. A few minutes later, he gets up, gets in the helicopter, starts it and flies off. I'm assuming that even at lunch time, they have to have the helipad cleared, because he'd literally taken off there and put it down a quarter of a mile away from the helipad.

After surgery the ambulance that took me home, drove really really carefully, because at every bump, I squeaked an "au" completely involuntarily.... that sure made them drive really careful. I was so grateful for that! They took a different route that was longer, to avoid speed bumps for me. I felt like a queen, being luxury transported. It was necessary of course, but gee...

In this case ( mostly ) there are 3 motorcycles involved, the front 2 speed up to block intersections ( bunny hop ) and are called spitsers, the 3rd motorcycle stays always a couple of meters in front of the ambulance and stays there the entire ride. If for some reason the ambulance needs to stop ( for emergency in the back with the patient), he can call back the front 2 motorcycles As stated in other comment, the front 2 constantly call out to the 3rd on intersections which lane to take and what direction to follow, they also callout how fast they are going and at what point on the highway they ride to hear at what distance they ride from each other ( highways have little signs on the shoulder each one a 100 meters apart….)

my brother has had such escort also long time ago. he sufferd brain trauma in a heavy single vehicle accident. we still think he had to evade a other car or so but no witnesses (nearby construction workers only heard the crash) and the only thing he remembers from that day is that he left the house to go fishing and woke up few weeks later in the hospital. (he made a full recovery despite a temporary paralysis that wasn't noticed until he tried to get out of bed the first time for a smoke, only permanent thing was his short memory being worse then it already was)

Cudos for your pronounciation of Dutch words! Perfect. 25 minutes from Zoetermeer to Erasmus MC Rotterdam is fast. In this case, however, the traffic was so low, that the ambulance would have been as fast without motor escort. But when traffic is busy (like it normally is) then I think they might shave off 30% off the time of the ambulance without motor escort. I drove this a dozen times and I usually needed 50 minutes in normal traffic and an hour in heavy traffic. Is it worth it? Well, if really every minute counts, yes. I cannot judge of course if it is always necessary.

Hey Highly, your question about the time saved by doing these kind of "transports"? They haul ass big time! They often are faster then the medical helicopters. The insane amount of training these cops go through so they can assist and make these transports possible is crazy. We "the dutch" have the upmost respect for the sirens and lights (the most people who don't get out of the way just don't know or freeze to react in the best way possible). When you stop for a red trafficlight and you need to make way for the Police, Ambulance and/or Firetrucks (when lights and sirens are used) its mandatory you run the red light if needed to make way. Love your reactions.
@Random_user_8472

@@Random_user_8472 check it. When there is no other way than run a red light you must go through red. This is then a mandatory rule. And yes you do not get a fine, if you do get one because of a traffic camera you can appeal it.

In English: The answer is simple: No! You are not allowed to drive through a red light yourself when emergency vehicles want to pass you and you are in the way, we read on AD. Rare video ;) It very rarely happens that one of them takes the wrong decision and ends up somewhere else. But he made up for his mistake, that's what you talk about at 22:00 : this officer has kept radiocontact going on his whereabouts. Even though he took a different motorway, he made sure to catch up with them again. Teams like these usually consist of only 3 motor-officers, that constantly switch roles. The one who starts up front is the first to block the intersection that comes first and thus he is ultimately also the one who will have to make sure to keep himself in front of the ambulance: that's a very important rule: the motor-officers NEVER get behind the ambulance. Their motto is that the ride in the ambulance itself is stressful enough for the patient already, and constantly having motors with sirens zoom past the ambulance will not add to that experience. It means they will have to floor it everytime the ambulance gets close to stay in front of it, but that's the deal. And that's also why this is so hard: you have to keep the distance to such a minimum that the general public has no chance at all of missing the ambulance, but also not so close you'll interfere with the ambulance itself. The training these guys (VTB Haaglanden, VerkeersTechnische Begeleiding The Hague region, (Technical Traffic Support) is very tough and the mistake here is something that most likely will be discussed at debriefing. EDIT: VERY RARE VIDEO. At the end, the radioroom announces a unit from Rotterdam is on its way to make sure the victim is safe. Apparently, this was quite a high-profile victim...

@arjanlenderink
@arjanlenderink 5 месяцев назад
At about 13:50 you 'report' don't you hear the siren... and the answer is most likely NO. And that's not surprising... because of the high speed, the sound disappears to the rear and not to the front. So you only hear it when the motorcyclist is almost on top of you. But if you use the mirrors as you should, the driver could have seen him coming from afar. In addition, many people always wonder why the flashing light(s) and siren go off when merging onto the highway. It has been proven that when emergency services enter 'normally', this is more streamlined and safer than when they appear with all the bells and whistles. Safety before everything!! When they have moved to the leftmost lane (lane 1), everything switches back on

They are in constant communication because Dutch traffic can be quite busy. So the motor agent tells constantly what he is going to do and how and how fast to drive. They go 130 km/h, that 30 km’s over the national speed limit, on the highway, slightly over 80 mph. Pretty fast with a critically ill patient on board. As you can see, the roads are in good condition, so that helps with the ability to go fast. On several moments the motor agent uses untranslatable heavy Dutch, because of the behavior of some drivers. At the end the female agent on the radio confirms that a police unit is on its way to protect the patient. That sounds like a serious crime like attempted homicide. This also explains the number of police at the beginning, in the suburbs, where they started their journey. Otherwise you don’t see that many police, in the case of a none crime related critically ill patient, but the blocking crossroads in advance technique will be applied, so a full motor agent team will do in that case a similar job.
