I really dig this technique, I'm trying to do something similar on some Luna Wolves models (white armor). Any advice for building up from gray? I've also had a hard time getting the stippling effect to come through, half the time it feels like I'm just painting with an awful brush.

try with a slightly firmer sponge and find a good white as white is notoriously terrible at coverage. If in doubt try thinning your white with FW Titanium white ink rather than water.

Looks awesome mate but I'd say there are consistency issues with the transfers on the larger knight. In the main it looks good but I think you should consider my suggestions. You want them to look painted on. SOME of your transfers do look painted on. Some I can clearly see the ring around then as well as some other issues. Tbh it's your hobby mate. Do transfers however you want. I don't mind. But if you want consistency in your results do it the way I suggested. If not, then that's cool to. Peace and love dude.

If you're not in a real hurry, you can skip several of the gloss varnishes. Specifically right before the oil wash. A brush-on gloss varnish also works wonders with the decal step, and the power fist step. Use an old brush if you pick it up. BTW, despite what a people say, Mineral spirits will not remove acrylic washes, inks or speed paints unless they have not cured, so you'd have to let it set for a good couple of hours before applying oils/enamels, but that also saves spraying.

It is definitly possible to attach decals on a matt finish. Gloss finish minimize the transferfilm to show and minimize silvering, but gloss finish is not a must for decals.

@Lullefication Год назад
@@medheadful alright! I watched it. So it has more to do with your techniques than anything else? I got a bit worried my transfers would fall off or something 😅
@medheadful
@medheadful Год назад
@Lullefication putting a gloss varnish down first smooths the area first which allows the decal to sit flat. This way you avoid tiny airbubbles forming. If you place it over a satin or matt you're more likely to encounter tiny airbubbles. Matt varnish for example is bumpy by nature. That's what give it its unreflective nature. I want transfers to be seamless and to look painted on. A gloss varnish is the easiest way to achieve this.

@@medheadful I can appreciate that, and added battle damage/weathering with the sponge method is definitely the best bang for the buck. It's just like hey, do you want to do traditional blending/shading/highlighting and spend 10 hours for a single marine? Cool buy an airbrush. You can't/won't buy an airbrush? Alright here's slapchop and contrast paints. And when it comes to gradients with contrast zenithal priming gets it done without the chalky result of dry brushing, or the spattered coloring of sponging.

I'm also being genuine about that. I can get transfers to be seamless and look painted on. I do this using a combination of gloss varnish and decal products. The gloss varnish has the added benefit of protecting my paint job throughout this process. Please feel free to link me to any photos you have and would love to see a seamless transfer without these processes. Every day is a school day.
