SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is the spiritual successor of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. Does it manage to treat the legacy of Battle for Bikini Bottom with respect? Is it one of the better licensed SpongeBob games from Nickelodeon? It's complicated.
While SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake works as a phenomenal adaptation of the source material, there's one problem that ultimately hurts the game and makes it feel worse to play than Battle for Bikini Bottom. However, because Purple Lamp Studios is still interested in making more SpongeBob video games in the future, they could use The Cosmic Shake as a learning experience and make something even better!

I absolutely agree with you, it’s a fun platformer and a great experience for anybody and that is what SpongeBob is meant to be. For all ages, genders, and sizes! the end was not very engaging, but it’s fun and works better than i anticipated! They may make another game with better mechanics and gameplay, but overall i don’t understand why people don’t like this game.

_SpongeBob SquarePants_ has always been one of my favorite cartoons, and this game is one of the franchise's best. The controls are a little off, but unfortunately that's to be expected from new releases these days. I like how it blends characters and aspects from classic and modern _SpongeBob,_ all the fourth wall breaks, the title card loading screens, and how it reworked the levels from _Battle for Bikini Bottom_ into these vibrant alternate universes. Despite it's technical problems, it still looks and feels (more or less) like a sequel to _BFBB._

It's pretty telling how there's more people interested in SpongeBob The Cosmic Shake than the other recent one Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway, which that game mainly appeals to people who watched Nickelodeon cartoons back in the day, the majority of which have been off the air/ended for over a decade now.

Generally, the game is amazing! I like the references, it feels like a real SpongeBob episode. However, I feel like the final boss segment was heavily rushed due to how it was executed, but it was still pretty fun. Deserves a 10/10. Purple Lamp rocks.

Despite the mixed reviews I actually quite liked the game. I'm partial to Battle for Bikini Bottom, having grown up playing the original on my PS2, but I found The Cosmic Shake to be a suitable successor to BFBB. Neither of the games are perfect by any stretch but this game is definitely the best case scenario in terms of an indirect sequel, and as someone who grew up watching the first few seasons I adored the frequent callbacks/references to that era. If you're someone who likes SpongeBob, especially the earlier seasons, I'd honestly suggest giving the game a shot as chances are you'll love it as I and everyone else I know that has played it does.

My biggest complaint about this game was this it was too short. It only takes 6-7 hours to beat the main story without getting everything but I do think it’s typical for a lot of these types of platforming games.

The game is great lol nothing wrong with it especially with that pricetag. Not every game has to be revolutionary and it doesn't have to be difficult at all. It's a Spongebob platformer, not Crash. Complaints like this are what discourage small development teams from continuing making games because they clearly poured their hearts and souls into making this game with what they can only to get put down. I appreciate Purple Lamp studios for remaking BFBB and now this new original game and I hope they keep making more games like this.

I feel like not saying “nothing is wrong with it” is really subjective when there could be people who have issues with the game and as for what Valisk said, he didn’t say the game was by any means terrible, he pointed out both the faults and good within the game. Granted, yeah I can get where your coming with the thumbnail but I feel like most RU-vidrs do this to get viewers, not excusing Valisk but it’s just a common tactic I occasionally see. Nobody said the game have to be revolutionary & just because it’s a licensed based game doesn’t excuse the fact that it could maybe be better to someone else, and in this case, this is supposedly a predecessor to battle for bikini bottom so naturally people are kind of going to have a high standard for this game, wether it’s fair is up to debate but it’s not something that can be helped really. Regardless, a game can be great & have its own charms but it’s nowhere near being flawless, I can say that for even bigger games outside SpongeBob Platforms but really any game can have a notable flaw and any person has the right to point it out. I also heavily disagree with calling Valisk criticism as “complaints” when it’s valid criticism and it’s not meant to discourage Purple Lamp Studio. Criticism can be used to help developers regardless of how big or small they are, into improving for patch updates or the next game, criticism is helpful and is not meant to just be negative, it can be looked in a positive light & should.

From my POV, this game is basically the Spongebob rip-off of Sonic Prime. A multiverse traveling adventure caused by a freak accident. Mermaid's Tears. Sound familiar? Paradox Prism. Cosmic Jelly. Sound familiar? Prism Energy. Wishworlds. Sound familiar? Shatterspaces. This game should've been called Spongebob Prime.

I'm curious: Did you ever play any of the SpongeBob PC games made by THQ in the 2000's? As kid who only had a PC (My parents never bought me an actual gaming console growing up), I used to play those SpongeBob PC games ALL the time. The first I ever played was "Battle for Bikini Bottom" for PC (Which is a completely different game from the console version. It was just a bunch of mini games, based on different areas in Bikini Bottom). Following that, I played "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)" for PC (Again, completely different from the console version. It was just a simple "Point and Click" game where you collect items to solve very simple puzzles), "Employee of the Month", and "Lights, Camera, Pants!" The last two games, again, were just simple "Point and Click" games, just like the PC version of the SpongeBob movie game.

I think that they absolutely nailed the tone of Spongebob on this one. As for the gameplay... I didn't know what to think when I first played the game, because it felt kinda empty since there was almost nothing to collect (most of the collectibles is only obtainable after unlocking new skills much later in the game), but it became a lot more fun after beating it and focusing only on the collectibles. The graphics (and especially the animation!) were really good for a Spongebob game, so I hope Purple Lamp keeps the license for future games. They clearly know what they're doing, and I would love to see them trying out different things with this franchise!

I also felt this game could have been so much better because it had the potential. Not meaning it’s a bad game I still found it fun but it was just a little too easy at times (I know it’s a kids game but cmon now kids are smarter than we think) also very short but overall it’s just an okay game. I still think Battle for Bikini Bottom stays on top for now.

I’m still playing the game very sparingly to avoid burnout but I’m enjoying it so far. Well, yeah the gameplay is tedious, with most levels having you going around the level collecting stuff for what seems like forever, but at the same time that one flaw is actually fun (to me at least) in some aspects because you get to explore these levels that are very big and beautiful. And you can't even say that this game is just the same thing over and over again because almost every level has a new mechanic to it, whether that be attacks or enemies. Sure, the game can feel boring and repetitive at times but I feel like that gets evened out by the amount of detail and care in the level designs and the new mechanics introduced basically every level.

I am personally loving the game. I was at first a bit underwhelmed starting off with it due to the first world being a drag, but it picked up HARD with the movie level, and it just kept going strong afterward, even if some of the levels are a bit too repetitive imo.

I’ve been enjoying this one very much! I will admit that some spots feel a lot like Battle for Bikini Bottom, but it’s really fun and the platforming is a lot smoother than BFBB. The story is fun and I’ve enjoyed most of the little mini games around the map. I’d definitely recommend it if you love SpongeBob games!

i haven't played it yet but i do have to agree that not all kids games have to be easy. for example the spongebob movie game (which i consider to be the sequel to BFBB) is perhaps the hardest in the entirety of spongebob games sometimes for unfair reasons but it is a fun and quality game for the most part even if some things don't make sense.

Personally, the game is brilliant, i understand your concerns of repetition within the game, but in sorta defence, battle is very similar in the sense of going point A to point B, however with battle there's spatulas to be collected which warrants the numerous paths, whereas cosmic shake is mainly a platformer rather than a collectathon but does have some collectables to warrant additional smaller side-paths. In terms of challenge thats where the secondary missions take place, examples being the spot hiding spot missions has you taking unexpected paths and more difficult platforming/combat to obtain the single celled pooch, also if you have the abilities you can do bonus challenges for doubloons which utilise spongebob's moveset better. Combat does feel a bit repetitive, i think the game expects you to mix and match moves, but there are some enemies that require specific moves to defeat like the urchin creatures needing the kick and the floating enemies needing a timed attack to send their projectiles back, every enemy is more or less based on the enemies from BFBB and movie plus some new ones like the big jelly. but the game does have room for improvement, like not including any projectile attacks like the bubble bowl, instead using a target bubble that never hits or does any damage, and vertical attacks like the bubble helmet for tikis above spongebob. Also the final boss was way too easy, even for a kid, i'd easily say it was the 2nd easiest boss with 1st being mr krabs.

In my opinion I think this game was amazing and a great sequel to Battle For Bikini Bottom. As a big SpongeBob fan myself, this game gave me the same vibe as Battle For Bikini Bottom but more to the concept. SpongeBob had some new aspects to him like riding a surfboard, becoming a snail, riding a horse and others. The levels were great and I loved the Glove World level (originally was supposed to be in Battle for Bikini Bottom but was scrapped so it was a good touch) and even Squidward as a boss was also originally planned for Battle for Bikini Bottom but was scrapped as well. But one thing I will say is that I will agree with everyone else when stated that the final boss was a bit too easy. Like I had a little bit more difficulty with the medieval Pearl boss (dodging her attacks along with dodging opponents) than the final boss. Another thing that they should’ve added was more sidelong things also making each area a requirement to get to (like gold spatulas in battle for bikini bottom) to make you have to go back to a area to collect what’s missed to move forward. They do have side missions but it just seems not needed unless you’re trying to 100% the game. Also other playable characters than just SpongeBob would’ve been nice but I do like on how they gave SpongeBob moves that Patrick and Sandy used to have (almost similar cartwheel spin and ground slam for Patrick and rope swing for Sandy replacing a hook instead) but all in all different variety of moves for SpongeBob was a good touch and made me enjoy it a bit more better. To sum what I wrote up, I think this game was a huge step forward to Battle For Bikini bottom and this game is neither better nor bad than it, it’s just as good as Battle for Bikini Bottom was and a good sequel overall.

My problem with the game is how they lock collectibles and challenges from you until you basically beat the game. Once i went back and got to play the levels like an actual collect-a-thon, i was having a blast.

I think my problem with this game (aside from it being kind of short) is that it's pretty buggy I didn't even know what button to push to purchase a costume until after the main story was over when I just angry mashed on the keyboard, at a random point it showed the button I needed to push, but then it disappeared immediately afterward. At least I knew what button to push now, but it doesn't change the fact that I went through the whole main story using only the default costumes The slide parts are the buggiest; very difficult to control, for some reason, when I land sometimes, it turns me around and makes me go the wrong way. Also sometimes the camera gets stuck and I have to click to make it work again

The platforming was definitely less infuriating than Battle for Bikini Bottom. But yeah for a game that has a lot of flying through the air/water, it could've been a little more challenging with its midair parkour. Maybe including post-game challenges to truly test your skills.

I completely disagree, I believe the Cosmic Shift lies somewhere between BFBB and the movie game in terms of ranking. It’s was a very fun experience and coming off of Rehydrated, I had little expectations considering that game was a buggy, unfaithful mess compared to the original. I would recommend picking this up at full price, you’ll enjoy your time with it especially if you’re a SpongeBob fan.

Im glad that now that we finally have the technology to make a licensed game look exactly like the TV show it's based on, instead we're choosing to make it look shiny smooth weird and just to make it look NEXTGEN they didn't even try to make the colors correct to the show

Personally I found it better than rehydrated even though it was a bit repetitive at times I didn't get too frustrated and rage quit which is a plus It also kept me hooked enough to finish the story on release day which is something rehydrated didn't really do for me It's a great game overall

I kind of have to disagree. personally I think they put enough variety so that it doesn't get boring. Sure, at least 3 of the boss fight (Including the final) where pretty lame and I somewhat dissapointed that the alaskan bullworm was so highly built up but never actually appeared (not even as an optional boss) but overall it still is a fun game with fun gameplay. Also I would argue what really helped the game was that it's humor this time had to come from the writting, than crazy weird animation like in the newer episodes of the show. Like don't get me wrong, I love crazy weird animation, but it kinda became the main focus on the show. Also the cutscenes in this game are absolutly beautifull and glad that the german dub got their original voice cast again for the game. Also I would argue that Spongebob and Spiderman are the two that have proofen for centuries that license games can be good

when i was a kid, i loved challenging games, christ i played blackcops II non stop and got to the point where i could be it in a hour & a half. I understand it was ment to be majoratively for kids, but dont make it overly simple, give kids challenge; The kid might get upset but it will teach them to keep trying and that it's okay to get fustrated.

I loved the game and have had no such problems! Solid 9 out of 10 for me, I thought it was a great successor to BFBB, and lots of other people I’ve seen online have thought so too. I respect this video, and this dude’s opinion, but if anyone reading this is thinking about getting the game, you should just go ahead and get it! I’ve seen way more people like it than not!

The “it’s a kids game” excuse is just dumb. There are plenty of difficult platformers made for kids. Look at the Donkey Kong Country games by Retro Studios, or the Crash Bandicoot series. These are made for kids first, yet they can still be a challenge. And look at Super Mario Odyssey. The main game is pretty easy, but if you go out of your way and do the sub area’s and secret kingdoms. It can be really challenging. The excuse is only valid when it’s a game made for literal babies. Kids like to be challenged, as long as they put in enough checkpoints so it doesn’t become tedious to do the entire stage over to retry a single part. I see no issue in making a game difficult.

yeah, kind of, but they´re a bit more open, while Cosmic Shake is more stream-lined. Don´t get me wrong: i still very much enjoyed it, despite its bugs. It´s just that Battle for Bikini Bottom was more open, even if it had somewhat linear story.

In all honesty I don’t think this game was ever going to be as amazing as battle for bikini bottom. Especially since SpongeBob would be the only playable character without Patrick and sandy. And yeah the bosses definitely felt like they were a bit too easy…
