Ampersand's Aquabord for watercolor is an unusual and intriguing clay based, absorbent ground surface to paint on. Let's take a look at it, do a spontaneous demo and talk about a question I had, can you use this surface for practice?

Great review Steve. I adore your spontaneous landscapes. I agree they'd be great for mixed media. I'll use them again but I'll try a different paint consistency and I'll incorporate some pencil/gouache. Thank you very much for the mention.

I bought several of these without any real knowledge about them other than their RU-vid video. Ignorance can be your friend, each has, so far worked out really nice. A set of 4 of the smaller ones mounted together as an abstract. A floral, with a really relaxed background. I did treat it much like an acrylic painting.

Very glad to see this video. I tried this board in the past but I gave up since our climate is so dry. After seeing this I would try it again and add more layers of moisture at the beginning.I really liked the mixed watercolor and pencils and the scratching at the end. Oh wow, guess we will have to call you the 700+ group, that is fantastic. I was going to ask why you didnt dab with a tissue but then you did and covered my question.

I have done some large (16x20 inch) paintings on this Aquabord and an advantage is that you don’t need to frame them and avoid the expense of framing. I just seal it with a spray fixative and it can go directly to the wall.

Yes, I have used this. Great for practice and experimental subjects because I have found I can wash the surface off and start a new one. I have found its not the best for super realism. But wonderful for impressionism and abstract work. I have fun with it and have been using the same one over and over because its just for play and loosening up for me.

This looks like a great medium for "etching" as in using the lifting to get back to a white line to create the picture. And it seems like negative painting might have an interesting outcome. I think I'll try it! Thanks!

I have not recovered from trying Yupo. It was so surprising-I about wore out my hair dryer. I think I’m having a hard enough time just taming my Arches but I’ll keep this in mind for the future in case I want a mixed media experience. Thank you.

Interesting to see how you managed to get some wash effects even though you weren't really applying washes - I've tried both Aquabord and Claybord with watercolours but I'm just a beginner, so my attempts were more decorative than artistic. I did one piece on Claybord which I liked, using ink outlines and soft washes which worked well. I'm definitely going to play some more and will be really interested to see the mixed media results when you do that!

Thank you so much for this video. I just watched Louise De Masi struggling with one of these. More realistic and layered subjects are apparently very frustrating using this board. Blending washes of color and softening edges appear nightmarish compared to doing so on paper. I've a large piece of aquabord I've been reserving, & I'm incredibly relieved, thanks to you and some other artists, to know how different this substrate is prior to attempting to use it. It will lessen the possible future frustration, & this stuff is so pricey! Many thanks, Steve!! 🎨🖤 *EDIT* oh, now I see Louise's comment. 😉

Interesting surface and I love the fact that it lifts so easily but I think I might struggle with it, it sounds a bit slippery. I always lift my paint off the surface instead of using white but sometimes it is difficult to get the white that I want. I always use hot press cotton paper, do you think I would find it easier with a cold press or rough? Need to try them

Very interesting. I've tried Aquabord panels but was not a fan, when I do a lots of layering for more details work I find it tends to get quite muddy quickly, but very wet washes for abstracts I found it did make some interesting effects. Not sure it I would use it again

One of my Aquabord had an instruction sheet included which explained I need to water wash the board before using to release air bubbles from the clay. I do this and a lot of bubbles appear.

Thanks for this review. I've been eyeing Aquabord for a piece I have in mind. Question: If you were going to do oil-based media over watercolor on this substrate, what would you seal the watercolor layer with? Clear gesso? Something else? Thank you.

I thought the instructions are to prewet the day before. They look great when a painting is separated as four paintings. Then our eyes put them together. I did that with 4 bigger ones and a waterfall/cliff. It turned out neat. 🤗
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 4 года назад
They tend to trap air in the clay so the rewet sequence helps relieve that. It doesn't really matter though as to how the board handles paint and washes.

But is it archival because it is special MDF, or because they put a sealant over the MDF, between it and the painting-ground surface?

I've been a subscriber to you for awhile now under my personal name. I watch you on my big screen tv, so I can't comment. I dabbled in watercolor. Maybe they were cheap, but I hated the results, so gave it up and moved on to other paintings, so I live vicariously through your videos lol. I recently used absorbent ground on a 12" record. (First time trying it out) I'm using inktense blocks and pencils and am currently building up the background layers. I know that apparently if you don't disperse the product, you can still lift it after it dries, but that is supposed to be on a canvas. No mention of it on the absorbent ground. One thing I love about inktense is being able to build up layers, but I'm struggling with this painting. If you have tried inktense on absorbent ground, can you give any advice? Thanks! Heather.

I am happy that I do not own any of this board as I am not experienced enough for this type of surface. I watched Louise and it's simply too much of a struggle to blend washes, soften lines and glaze so you don't remove the layer underneath. To me, it's like walking on eggshells, no matter how hard you try, you can't do anything right! I am interested to see your mixed media attempt on this surface!

I can see how the Aquabord would be interesting to work on......I have put ground on a regular canvas and was able to lift but the paint seemed to "slide" around more...... Also something I have not tried, speaking of mixed media, have you ever tried Watercolor with Alcohol Ink? I have not..... Would that be something you would try? Again, Thank you for this lesson!

What are your thoughts on preparing your own canvas with ground? I get people ask me for commissions on canvas for no other reason really than they don't understand the difference between watercolour and other painting mediums. I feel bad that I can't offer it to them but in the UK it's hard to get hold of. Ground on the other hand is easier to get hold of, and I'm interested in preparing my own canvases but I'm not sure if it's worth it.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 4 года назад
It's fine as far as it goes and its done but as I point out in this video, painting on ground is very a different painting experience (and more difficult) than paper. Keep in mind you can also mount paper to painting panels even to thick gallery cradle panels.
