I think every book or article I have read on perspective has used buildings and other urban elements to explain perspective concepts. (This might be my own bias, since I am mostly an urban sketcher, not a landscape sketcher.) This is the most complete explanation of perspective in a natural environment that I've ever seen! And much needed! Thank you so much! And I can see why so many landscape painters make these mistakes... I've heard people say they don't do urban scenes because they "can't do perspective"... sorry, dude, but perspective is everywhere! 😆

I found your channel just a little while ago... I'm so thankful I did! You talk about watercolor so much different than anyone else I've found on RU-vid. The way you talk about the techniques and explain things like this just makes sense to me! Thank you so much!

That was great, Steve! Good lesson, good reminders. I would love to see you address how to simplify landscapes. What to leave out, what to leave in, what to change or modify. So many landscape reference photos are so “busy”, and my brain wants to paint everything it sees!

I agree, I need the same lesson too, but in general I think that you can add details in the foreground of a landscape or where you want that the eyes of the observer go. For example, I painted some portraits of animals: eyes are always well detailed, because you look the eyes at first.

Great video! Great summary of perspective and scale. In 1999 I received my associate's degree in Architecture and there was a class on Architectural Drawing. In that year long class they taught how to draw with scale and perspective. It wasn't just buildings either. We drew everything but in scale and size. I would highly recommend for anyone to take a class on this subject. The book we used was by Rendow Yee Architectural Drawing: A Visual Compendium of Types and Methods. Just in case anyone is looking for a book. I still refer to it after all this time.

Really useful. It's so easy when you're new to painting to look at a scene without really SEEING it. One of the things that really struck me when I started was how you start really noticing things that you wouldn't have noticed before. You learn, somehow, to SEE differently, rather than just glancing and kind of blanking it rather than reaaly looking. I'm not explaining this very well, I know... Anyway, thank you for this video which points out and explains these issues so well. Greatly appreciated.

I love this so much! I studied architecture for a year in grad school before sanity took hold, so this really hits home for me. Thankyou so much! I loved how you showed that the lines move away from the focal point in opposite directions, the ground and the sky planes. At least, that was how I understood it, hopefully I got that right. The only question left for me was how you determined the horizon line in both the horse scene and the forest scene with the path. In the latter I didn't even notice that the perspective was looking up hill? I'm still trying to figure out how you came up w/the horizon lines... Thanks for making my brain hurt in a good way!

Big help! Thank you, Steve. I especially appreciate your explanation on the last picture. I had a light bulb moment. It does seem that I still struggle finding the horizon line I always believe it to be lower than it turns out to be. Maybe I'll never get it, but I'll keep trying.

Technically speaking you are brilliant. Speaking of “methodology” (how to) you are outstanding! Simply put the information in your head must be creating extreme pressure against the inside of your skull (LOL). This was a great, great lesson about horizon/eye-level. I messed up quite a few landscapes not coordinating the horizon, vanishing point and the eye-level. This error will create a distortion and searching for the cause can be mystifying. You really know how to bring clarity to any subject.
