Spoon Carving
While at our cabin in Alaska, I decided to hand carve a cooking spoon and use it to cook our meal. The wood is Alder. I only used traditional tools such as an axe, knife, and hook knife. I then used the spoon I carved to cook reindeer sausage and vegetables on a skillet over campfire.

That is an excellent spoon…. I was sitting in my backyard next to the wood stove under a lean-to type pagoda shelter, drinking tea and playing chess with my neighbour. I had built the shelter myself, I had carved the chess set by hand and also carved to spoons we were using to stir our tea by hand as well. He looked up at the roof of the shelter, down at the chess set, then looked at the spoons and said, “If we dropped you in a forest with nothing but a saw, an axe and a knife…. you could making everything you would need couldn’t you” To which I replied, “that’s the whole idea” The creative act of making something is the very thing that elevates us up to a higher level. Anyone can be a consumer, if you want to feel good about yourself become a creator.

Been carving spoons about 1 year,my question is how to keep spoon from fuzzing up when you wash it.i have kept knives sharp,burnished,and or sanded them I use mineral oil.any suggtions.thanks

Oh ok. I haven’t used mineral oil. I usually use walnut oil and have found better finish when the spoon is burnished then baked. I only hand wash and use the same blue sponge made for scrubbing non stick pans.

Btw, I heard sanding can actually make the fibers stick out and cause fuzzing.
