@@andyspoons the RU-vid presence will start slow, and you may feel like it wasnt worth the effort at first, but word will spread! There is a healthy community out here of people that really appreciate the artistry you have to share. Keep your chin up!

I would like to see the finished product, then the ax work to get there. I was surprised to see the crank and bowl on the bark side.

Well, you just saw the axe work to get there, and part 2 will be coming up next week! A tangential grained spoon is pretty common if you want to get some concentric circles in the bowl 👌

You watch a video. Then you watch the video again. And again. And again. And maybe you watch other videos. THEN, one day you notice that not only does that chopped-off angle at the one end of the billet help keep your fingers out of the way of the axe, but it also forms the crank and the bowl. I'm not ready to buy an axe yet. I finished my first spoon yesterday (I put it on fb if anybody's interested). And you DON'T want to know how I got rid of the excess wood You DON'T want to know how I carved the bowl out. You DON'T want to know how I shaped everything else. But I finished it and it's BEAUTIFUL.

As long as you enjoy yourself, and you are safe then it doesn't matter how you get there!

Hello I'm a beginner in spoon making. made 4 so far with improvised tools so to speak. without going hogwild cost wise I'm looking to "upgrade" do you have recommendations for axes and drawknives.

Hi Sean! So depending on where you land in the sliding scale of putting work into a tool, you can spend not that much on an axe or drawknife and have something really special! I have some videos on restoring an old $20 drawknife, and regrinding a $60 Stihl axe if that helps. I will also be talking about some more affordable tool options soon!
