Thanks to this video I looked at the sportneer line before buying. I just got the sportneer fluid trainer and it's my first trainer and I can't be more happy with it so far (4 days). Its $150 opposed to $90 but out of the box it is quieter than my buddies cycle ops 2 trainer. My only issue was that the instructions aren't all that great. But if your handy it's no big deal. Love the content and keep up the great work!

Hey, I just purchased the Sportneer Magnetic Trainer a few weeks ago - before coming across your review, and am liking it VERY much. Since I have a permanent back injury - partially due to nearly 60 years of riding in a stream lined 'speed' position on road and velodrome race bikes, I must have a very upright riding position, so I now ride a Mountain bike with very upright set up with raised handlebars are 8 inches higher than the saddle, whereas my previous 'racing bike' set ups had the drop handlebars 12 inches lower than the saddle. I have a spare Quick Release spindle rear wheel which I switch over as the gravel trail / 'off piste' tyres make a LOT of noise when using my Sportneer, so I have a smooth tread tyre on the trainer wheel - so I can hear the Netflix films sound clearly while cycling. I came across this review and am pleased that I did as the fluid trainer is MUCH noisier than my Sportneer trainer, less versatile, more complex to set up - and much more expensive. Thanks for the in depth review.

Loved your review and thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. I do have a question for you. Amazon sells many of these trainers, some with and some without the resistance meter. Since my bike already has gears, which enables me to increase or decrease the tension on the bike, do I still need a resistance meter?
@PittsburghActive
@PittsburghActive 3 года назад
L. Diez hey thanks so much for the support! So the cycle ops I have is a fluid trainer so it’s supposed to give me resistance the harder I pedal. Kinda like rowing a boat. Kinda lol. The magnetic trainers do need some resistance. I think it’s really up to you. I think the cycle ops fluid 2 has decent resistance on it’s owns with geared bikes.
@PittsburghActive
@PittsburghActive 3 года назад
Sorry I pressed send too soon and didn’t scan for typos. They both are great options really. It magnetic gives you more resistance since it’s gearing plus the magnetic resistance. The fluid ones has gearing and the fluid resistance.
@AngusNB
@AngusNB 2 года назад
With the Fluid type you get more resistance as you pedal faster. Think of walking / running through water (fluid), the faster you try to go the more resistance you feel. The magnetic type don't work that way, resistance doesn't increase with speed.

great video. Is it necessary to use the quick release that comes with the trainer? and if so, can I just leave it on my bike for my other commutes or do I have to switch them every time I want to use the trainer?
@PittsburghActive
@PittsburghActive 4 года назад
Chris Rwechungura great question. No need to switch it out if you already have a metal tipped quick release. As long as it’s metal tipped to prevent wear as a contact point to the trainer you should be good. But if you do end up using the provided quick release skewer, you’ll be able to use it on normal rides (given your bike doesn’t you a mountain bike style thru axel).

@admiralackbar1286

The part that has me the most curious is this: Let's say on a magnetic resistance one you set it to "4". You're in the third from highest gear. You keep the magnetic resistance set at "4". You now shift to your highest gear. You keep your cadence exactly the same. What exactly happens now? Is it harder to pedal? The same? The flywheel on the trainer would be going faster, there's that, but what does that feel like? How does this situation feel different on a fluid one?
@thesoulshakers

Thanks for the review. I'm considering getting one. Is it better to use a trainer type tire or is it ok to use my regular road tire?
@PittsburghActive
@PittsburghActive 3 года назад
Drink Coffee Ride Bikes hey man thanks! I’ve been using a regular road tire for years and it’s been fine. Is there wear localized to a certain part of the tread? Yes. But I use the same bike as a trainer as I do off the trainer. If you end up using that 1 bike for mostly trainer use then use up your current road tire and then invest in a trainer specific tire.

@electricdorito
@electricdorito 3 года назад
For the Sportneer, I had to take the inner pieces of the resistance dial off in order for it to fit on my handlebars. I think they intentionally designed the pieces to come out easy because that was one of my issues as well. But I am having some major vibrating issues depending on how much I tighten the resistance flybar. In your video, you say to tighten it so that there's a slight dimple in the tire, but I've tried adjusting it tighter and looser and it still sucks. Too tight, more vibrations. Looser, not enough contact to get resistance.

I just watched the video, watch how fast the rear wheel is spinning when he compares the loudness of the trainers. He puts it in the hardest gear on the fluid trainer, making the rear wheel spin at a much higher rate. On the magnetic he's only mid way thru the rear gears thus rear wheel spinning at lower rate. Believe me the fluid will give you all the resistance you need/want. You get more or less just by shifting, those handlebar resistance adjusters suck. I've got some rollers with them and never use them, just shift gears to make harder/easier.

No, that’s the fluid Sportneer. The magnetic Sportneer is under $100. Get the fluid version, it’s better.

My bike has a through axle... how can I use it on a trainer?

Companies make adapters for the through axles to work with indoor trainers

It’s called a thraxle and is quite expensive,but your stuck with through axle so no choice.

I bought a Kinetic Traxle ($45) after realizing the included skewer wouldn't work. But the bolts on the Traxle are too big to fit into the supports of the Sportneer trainer.

@@erstad17 are you sure? Mine fits perfectly

Great investment for a beginner trainer. This will last you a while.

You’re gonna want a smooth tire for the rear wheel.

Thanks again for the review. I emailed Zwift to find out why don't yet support the Sportneer Trainer (power curve) in their app. They responded but did not indicate why they don't support it. So how do we get them (Zwift) or Sportneer to get this trainer supported in the Zwift app? As you indicate it's one of the most popular "non-smart" trainers on the market, it would be to Zwift's advantage to support it..

Great review. I just got the CyOps F2. I think a couple things observed went in one ear and out the other for most. The biggie: the CO F2 FEELS MORE REALISTIC. More like riding your own bike outdoors, and less like your at a spin class or ur rear wheel is being “pinched in a vise”. With the Fluid2, as I understand it (keep in mind, I’m a bicycle rookie) resistance increases the harder you push yourself, even in your hardest to pedal gear. So perhaps that part of the review might not have made a fair representation of the F2’s resistance potential? Also the manual for the CyOps mentions the option to purchase additional front tire stands, as they have the ability to stack to make a formidable incline. (Full disclosure, I have just the one, so I can’t comment on stacking them or indoor “hill” training). Seems like if you really wanted to stabilize the front wheel, say, while your shiny new one is in transit to you, you could make one. Something like a yoga block, maybe, using a utility knife? (Wear PPE if you do “MacGyver” one - because that’s what smart people do)!

True about the Fluid , I just finished 3000 miles on a Blacburn TechMag in 79 days & just tried the Cyleops Fluid 2 Trainer for the last 2 day, 120 miles the feel is more natural on the Cyloeps & seems way easier I am actully adding aound 4 miles an hour with the Cyleops a, same bike same odometer not sure why, I did realize with the Blackburn Mag the Miles accumalted seemd low compared to my out door ridding, he is correct about the magnetic tranier if one wants to train for hills it might be better, at the moment I am training for endurance so at the moment the cyleops seems better smoother on my legs, can sit for 5-7 hours at the same speed, planning to do another 3000 miles in the next 2 months on the Cyleops so I will be able to compare, bottom like it's all about one's mind, one mothe thing my Cleops is way way quieter than the one in the Video , shrieking noise seems a bit unusual
