The 1980s was unquestionably the era of hot hatchbacks, but the Mazda MX5 made sports cars cool again when it took the classic MG and Triumph formula and made it practical and reliable. Many roadsters soon followed, but a hot hatchback resurgence with the likes of the Peugeot 106 GTI meant driving enthusiasts had a tough choice in the 90s of sports car or hot hatch - which makes the best modern classic?

As someone who has owned a Eunos Roadster V-Special and a Citroen Saxo VTS i can whole heartedly say i miss the roadster massively but on an everyday basis I'd have my VTS back everytime as it was the best of both worlds.

The choices we had up to the 2000’s were interesting and exiting on a relatively modest budget instead of the sea of black & grey SUV tanks 🤮 now no wonder these classics are getting so popular, I’ve got an MGF VVC & Rover 25Gti just for the fun of it because that’s what driving used to be….

Purchased a Saxo VTR new in 1999, fun little car. Fast forward to today and I have a 916 Alfa Spider as a weekend toy. Of the two you tested I think I would go for the 106, more practical and rarer than a MX5.

Had 3 MX-5's in my younger years. Absolutely loved them. Summerevenings cruising around on country roads with my favorite music on. Or during winter with temperatures far below 0 degrees top down and everybody gesturing that i'm crazy. 🤣

Buy one of each and die a happy man 😀 106 and 306GTIs were THE stand out hot hatches of the late 90s...MX5 N.A. was THE affordable sports car of the early 90s.......

EVO tested the 306GTI and 106GTI on the circuit in 1997. It included many sportscar, MX5, TVR, Porsche 993. The 306 won, 106 was second as far as I remember. The 106 however was the fastest through the fastest corner of all cars. The 106 had the best brakes of that time, better than Porsche. TVR finished last: no-one felt safe... We drove 2 106GTI's (both my wife and me), the newest one with the roof and leather. Maxi Cosys on the back seats, two child trolleys in trunk. But nowadays you must have an SUV even before the child is born. Not many people will ever understand what driving pleasure is. Still looking for a nice one. Not hard to find, but expensive... Luckily I still have an MX5...

Two great modern classics that are fun to drive in a way that many modern cars aren't even if they are faster. A tough choice as these two represent the best of their respective types but the 106 GTI gets my vote given the unpredictable British climate and the fond memories I have of owning a 1.9 205 GTI in the 90's.

My Quiksilver 106 GTI has been in the family for over nine years now the kids love it fun little car! The 205 gti became to expensive should kept my last one! Had loads!! So the 106 & 205 is the only cars I know & driven from the age of 16 & I'm now 38 & still drive a pug! 😎🏁

I used to have a 1.8 R-limited NA and it was great fun on a back road with the roof down. I'd probably take a really nice spec MX-5 over the 106, but the GTI would make the more interesting choice as they're a lot more rare now. This isn't as easy as I thought. I'm glad I'm not stood in front of them, money in hand. 😬💷

Had the first Diablo red 106 GTI in 1996 - no part-leather seats on these first models - taught me how to steer using the throttle (not with rear passengers!) and definitely 0-60 in under 8 seconds - great fun car - not great protection in a crash but did have ABS which was rare in 1996.

The 106GTi was a great car. Great looks - perhaps even better than the 205, good performance and handling. Let down by the pedals. The clutch pedal is a stupid design with the arm attached to the right hand side of the pedal instead of behind. This makes it difficult for anyone with larger feet.

If it was when I was a student when my fiesta died on the M6, and i had a choice between these two, I’d have wanted the MX5, with it being RWD and having pop up headlights. Now I have the RWD ticked off with my E39, it’d be a much more difficult choice. I’d probably end up with the 106 if I was in a position to buy one, as I could justify it to the sensible half of my brain as being a winter car, with it being FWD and having, for its size, a decent boot.

I owned Clio of this generation, and some friends owned other French cars. While they were a bit of fun to drive, they were also money pits. I was so glad when someone rear ended my Clio so I could then get a different car. I bought an only 98 accord and it felt like a car 10 years ahead of the Clio!

I love the old NA MX5 and we also have a 106 GTi. But we also have a mk1 106 Rallye that I think is better than the GTi. The Gti is more refined and grown up, but you can get newer cars that do that better. The rawness of the Rallye is something you can't get with a newer car, and probably never will again. And there's something deeply satisfying about driving an NA MX5. So have both, I reckon

Cool video guys. For me, you can be that retro cool guy reliving you youth in the 106 GTi, god there a hoot! However, in an MX5, it's like you failed in life. I wouldn't feel great owing an MX5 in my 30s. That is unless I had a huge collection and it sat there as a 7th car etc. I do like a mk1/2 Mx5 don't get me wrong, just wouldn't choose it if I was going for a roadster. Cool little 1st sports car though for a younger generation.

As I've already got an Aston Martin Vantage Roadster, I'd pop for the 106 GTi. I love a good hot hatch and in the early 2000s ran a very rare Citroen ZX 16v. Almost none of them about now, extremely rare. People automatically assumed the Volcane was the top spec ZX as there were so few 16v models with the arch extensions, the roof spoiler etc. That is 1 car I will forever regret selling (along with a Cavalier GSi). The 106 GTi shares similar ingredients to the ZX 16v and a car I've always been very fond of. In my early 20s, before buying the ZX, I did go for a few test drives in a couple of Eunos Roadsters (early 2000s being the heyday for the grey import market) and really liked them. My Uncle had had a green ZX 16v when they were new and my heart leaned toward that as I lusted after them but often wonder what life would have been like with an MX-5.

Believe it or not there was a lad from north west area of N.Ireland showing zx GTi at dubshed last year, spotless time warp condition too. The french know how to make entertaining great handing hot hatches as for as I'm concerned. We had a 106 GTi china blue for ten years, totally standard car which only used two crank sensors, an alarm sensor and a new exhaust back box. Fantastic car and an absolute blast to steer, you can really use that light rear to your advantage and I called it the B road giant slayer (Irish b roads are epic ina good hot hatch) because the amount of more powerful cars that were left in its wake was hilarious. I'd recommend one to anybody and miss it to this day. Friend has a 182 Cleo which has that same flavour, you literally drive the wheels off it any time you set your hoop in it! I love the mx5's too but it's the 106 GTi for me as it's 247/365 fun rain hail or shine!

Back then I’d have gone 106 gti no question but now if I was to buy one as a classic I’d go mx5. It offers something different than just a normal car but slightly faster, like basically every hot hatch does.

Sadly I'm a bit too tall to fit in an mx-5 (190 cm). My weapon of choice instead is the Citroen Xsara VTS Phase 1 (not the ugly picasso looking thing). It makes double the power that the diesel 5-door I had before. Even the diesel version was very chuckable and I used to abuse lift-off oversteer and left foot braking a lot in that thing, drifting trough the snowy countryside roads. I've had to work hard to catch up with maintenance as this car sat for 8 years and I had to fix previous owners mistakes. I plan on making little upgrades here and there but still keeping it oem+. It's tempting to just strip out all of the interior, AC, put a rollcage in ect. but the interior is just in too perfect condition. For a 23 yo french car there are no interior rattles.

biases will say the 106, would love a GTI. Even my 1.4 is fun to chuck around, my 1.1 too but a slight hill and some wind and you’re struggling to maintain the speed you’re at. as much as a cult classic the MX5 is, they’re fun and nothing more to me while the 106 you can daily easily enough - fold the seats down and they can be a slight take on a shooting brake. both like to rust too, so they share that negative ahah

Save yourself the heartache NA and NB ownership.. get a Toyota MR2 MK3. Ignore the claims of lack of storage - you don't own a 2 seater for storage. Also, more storage space than you think in the bins behind the seats. However, practicality is where the hot hatch comes in and boy that 106 GTi is lovely. Always felt the 106 was a car that looked good on release, today, and all the years in between.
